The best modern Sonic game?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Before anyone/someone says "all modern Sonic games are shit", what Sonic game is the most fun despite being imperfect or not? These are the modern Sonic games on the top of my head:

Sonic Adventures
Sonic Adventures 2
Sonic Heroes
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Colors
Sonic Generations

I've played Generations and really loved it and I have nostalgic love for Sonic Adventures. Is Unleashed recommended (for a $20 game)?

Definitely Sonic 06. A masterpiece. I liked the part when the human, under-18 princess kissed the blue spiky haired hedgehog in the mouth.

Haven't played Generations yet, but Colors otherwise.

The Werehog levels in Unleashed were HORRIBLE buttonmash fests.
The daytime levels were exercises in level memorization, which while partially true in all Sonic games to get good times, was to an extreme. Took all the fun out.

Generations is the best. Unleashed is okay, the platforming stages play a bit like the 3D stages in Generations, and the Werehog stages are bland. If the concept of the Werehog levels doesn't bother you, you'd enjoy it.

Colors was... universally loved?

Universally loved was probably not the best way to describe it, but compared to all the other 3D Sonic games in the last decade, it's the one that has gotten the best reception. Sonic Generations may overtake it but who knows.

Don't forget the deep psychological undertones that arise in Radical Train when Eggman's grand scheme to finally best Sonic the Hedgehog is to collide head-first into a giant pile of dynamite, which in-game will inexplicably cause you to lose a life.

I love Sonic Adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Colors. I hated everything else. I haven't tried Generations yet.

Colors and Generations received the most positive receptions. Answers that don't include Colors are generally going to be from people who did not play it. SA1 and SA2 were highly regarded and still are by some, but they've aged. Unleashed has some fans too.

I'll never forget how Sonic saved a little girl from suicide two inches away from death

Yeh I dunno if being the least terrible equates to universally loved.

For its time, I thought Sonic Adventure 1 was the most fun. Obviously its aged poorly, but I don't think that should necessarily apply.

Sonic Colors + Sonic Generations = guaranteed fun.

I'd recommend SA 1&2, but those are not for everyone (I like both but those are games I grew up with, an adult person with no Sonic experience may think its total shit.) , try them to see if you like the style.

Unleashed was cool, but man those werehog moments are so turnoff. I still managed to get some fun out of those, as a fan...but most people will hate.

If you want to hate Sonic with all you heart and soul, I'd definitely go with 2006, can't go wrong with that.

Everybody always brings up the weird hedgehog-human relationship in this game and everything else that's terrible about it but to me the most offensive thing is Eggman's design.

Jesus Christ.

Agreed, he looks like those "edgy, realistic" Mario designs that guy was posting a few months ago.

I saw the Sonic and Elise make out scene...

Isn't Amy supposed to get angry or something? I dunno, I haven't played the game so...

He looks like he belongs in a Final Fantasy game.

Which to be honest was probably their intention.

Man... Is Sonic 2006 really marred with awkward cutscenes and a horrible fanfic-like story?

SA1/2 are still beloved for nostalgia purposes I guess (think of how many people will say "Sonic hasn't been good since the Dreamcast" vs. "since the Genesis" although lately the latter has become the more general consensus).

Generations and Colors are the only thoroughly good games of the modern entries, and Unleashed should be recognized for laying the groundwork for those with the daytime levels. Now if Sonic Team did a full game with Classic Sonic, instead of licensing it out to Dimps or some bullshit, we'd be in business.

Sonic Adventure 2 due to chao gardens accounting for most of my playtime.
SA2 was a great game, especially the chao garden portion. Its crazy that SEGA has yet to release a standslone chao title with how popular it was in SA2

I think the problems with Sonic 2006 begin with SEGA trying to redesign Sonic and co. AGAIN. Similar to when they change them with the Adventure series. This was suppose to be Sonic Adventure 3. Just a overall horrible direction for Sonic. Combined with the fact that the game was not even finished. Some day I want to hear what truly went down at SEGA that caused that game to come out in that state. It took years to hear what happened to Sonic X-treme.

I think if they gave it another six months to a year in the oven it would have been a much better game.

Mechanically, anyway...Plot and design wise, of course not, but at least the gameplay wouldn't have been so damn broken.

But they had to meet Christmas 2006.

Right, those mach speed sections man cool in theory but, damn near uncontrollable.

Recent favorite: Sonic Colors
Overall favorite: Sonic Heroes

I really liked 'Colors' (and looks so nice), but 'Heroes' is my favorite simply because there's no bullshit around it. All acts, no story, no completely different gameplay mechanics. Just run until the end and void falling. The 3-characters mechanic was nice and added some variety but didn't changed the core gameplay.

By the way, aren't Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and The Black Knight also "modern Sonic"?

My personal favorite: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the Gamecube (I spent hours in Chao gardens, and if they ever brought that back, I would disappear for a long time.
Overall best Sonic Colors
Generations is overall solid if you want something from classic and modern gameplay.

Have you played Heroes recently? It's second only to 2k6 in terms of glitchy controls.

Jesus Christ Bingo Highway still gives me nightmares.

Reposting what I said in... er, one of the Generations threads:

"I've finally decided that Generations complements Colours rather nicely. There are a few things I didn't like about Generations (and to be honest, after going back and playing a bit of Colours and then Generations, I like Colours a little more for reasons I'll get to later this week). But all-in-all, Generations is a pretty good platformer. The Classic level designs and Modern level designs work very well with their multiple pathways and platforming elements. Not to mention the fanservice with the cutscenes, attention to detail in the levels, the music, and the included levels.

"After replaying many levels for red rings, I think that the Modern levels' fun comes from trying to memorize and discover newer and faster routes in order to attain the best time and rank (plus get red rings). The levels aren't as balanced as Colours' levels, but after you try to work on perfecting the Modern Sonic levels' playthroughs, I've started to ignore the imbalance with regards to platforming and behind-the-back play (what I mean by "imbalance" is the fact that some of the behind-the-back sections felt somewhat like filler while in comparison to Colours, there was a reason for the behind-the-back play even though the majority of stages were done in 2D perspective in that title). The Classic Sonic portions, I suppose, were to complement the behind-the-back perspective of the Modern Sonic portions, but I guess what the game lacked was cohesion and fluidity in comparison to Colours. However, Modern Sonic's drifting in Generations is way better than the Colours' drifting, that's for sure.

"As I finish up the plat, I'll probably think about the game's mechanics a little more, but overall, I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a must-play. It's a very good effort on SEGA's behalf. It isn't crappy like Sonic 2006 or Shadow the Hedgehog. It's legitimately good like Colours was."

I prefer Sonic Colours, however. I know people say that in a lot of ways, due to the wisp powerups, it's less of a pure Sonic experience, but I liked the level setups, presentation (ie: audio, visuals, narrative) and 2D sections a little more than Generations. It has more of a cohesive world, nice atmosphere (including music, Eggman's PA announcements and gorgeous scenery) and a better final section than Generations did.

Generations, however, has a lot nice Modern stage design. It's extremely satisfying to find all the different paths in the behind-the-back perspective, and really fun to run those routes again and again to clock the best time. The modern mechanics work very well in this game as well. I kind of miss swimming (and maybe the double jump but I don't think it's needed here, plus it was a little awkward in Colours sometimes) a bit, though. I also can't help but to feel the final segment of the game was rushed. I didn't really like how Planet Wisp was executed in terms of the Wisps (Classic's Sonic's Spikes, in particular), and the final boss... well, I've griped about that for a while.

Thus I think they both go nicely together hand-in-hand, though I prefer Colours slightly more than Generations.

So for me, the best modern era Sonic games are:

+ Unleashed's Day Levels

I never really played Sonic 06, but it mostly reminded me of the Sonic OVA from 1999. City levels, kinda dark, princess character, etc.
...I... I disagree...

Sonic OVA was actually endearing. Sonic 2006 was...

A few months ago actually. :p Still had a blast. Yeah it wasn't "perfect" but guess is more nostalgia than anything, since compared to looking around for hidden gems, digging underground, watching long-ass cutscenes or turning into a wolf I preferred it.

Maybe Colors will be my "overall favorite" once (if?) I finish it. XD

Sonic Rush without a doubt. The gameplay is good and all that but they got Naganuma of Jet Set Radio fame to do the music and damn was it awesome.
