The best modern Sonic game?

Adventure 2 is still my favorite, although my brain might be riding on Gamecube birthday memories. I've played it recently and I still like everything about that game. The treasure hunting was kind of annoying, but still fun. Sonic/Shadow levels are great. Second is Generations. Awesome game all around. Was kind of hoping for some Sonic Adventure 2 style online racing mutliplayer, but eh. Leaderboards are good enough. Third is Colors. I like that game. Kinda hated the controls and level design at times, but I still like it. Forth is Secret Rings. Bought a Wii for that game. Shit got real once you upgraded Sonic. Fifth is Adventure 1. Haven't played it in a long time, but I have fond memories of Sonic's storyline.

Sixth is Unleashed. Daytime stages were perfect imo. Sadly, everything else about the game was ass. I'd love a game that had only Unleashed day-type stages with its controls. It would be my personal favorite Sonic game. Generations and Colors doesn't feel like Unleashed daytime to me. They are close, but not good enough. Colors was kind of restricting, and Generations is all over the place with its Modern Sonic level design. Also, I prefer the controls in Unleashed HD daytime compared to Colors and Generations. Infinite Drifting and QSS all day man.

Is it weird that I think the Wii version of Unleashed is the better game overall? Ignoring the Werehog because he's shit in both versions, I thought the Wii version's daytime stages were still ok and I preferred Holoska and Eggmanland in the Wii version. Also, Wii version did boss battles better and had no stupid medal collecting and it only took you seconds to get to levels instead of walking around a hub like in the HD version.

Heroes is in seventh. I thought it was ass, but above the remaining three. I had some fun with Team Sonic on the first time through, but the bad controls and glitches and dumb level design fuck that game up. I'll put Shadow in 8th place. It's bad, but not Sonic 2006 type bad. It's still playable at least, but I don't see why anyone would want to play it.

Black Knight is ninth for me. That game was letdown total. How do you take Secret Rings and make all the little stuff better (in game menus, graphics, music, and story), but make the gameplay worse? Fuck that game. Should have been an open-world, faster Zelda rip-off that let you used a controller instead of the Wii remote. Game would have probably been decent with better level design as well. I'd still take it over Sonic 2006 though.

List

Good:

Adventure 2
Generations
Colors
Secret Rings
Adventure 1

Average:

Unleashed
Heroes

Bad:

Shadow
Black Knight
Sonic 2006

Not well versed in handheld Sonic titles. I loved Rush 1 and Advance 1 + 2, but don't really care for the others. Also, Sonic Battle was amazing.

Simple yet enjoyable portable Sonic. No detrimental gimmicks to gameplay, great special stages, the closest Dimps has ever got to a good Sonic game.
anyway.
.

Unleashed was horrifyingly bad as were all the 3d ones before it.
Colors was incredible and the only good one IMO that was made since the 2D games and I'm one of those really fucking hard to please guys. Like "was frontpaged and declared the angriest sega fan on Earth by segafans.net" before kind of fan.

I haven't played generations yet, but it looks to be the 360/ps3 equivalents of the really tight gameplay designs used in Colors sans all the wisps. If so it'll likely be incredible when I pick it up.

Havent played Generations yet, so Colors and SA2.

Definitely Sonic 06. A masterpiece. I liked the part when the human, under-18 princess kissed the blue spiky haired hedgehog in the mouth.

Actually it was a barely legal princes kissing a teenage cartoon character's corpse.

Romance of the decade.

Everytime I even think about that shit I want to kick Elise in the teeth. She's worse than Big the Cat in terms of the shitty friends.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was the game I bought with my Gamecube (the first console I ever bought for myself). I loved that game so much. The Sonic/Shadow levels were so much fun to play through over and over trying to get the best score. I think the stats say I played through the first Sonic level over 100 times

I actually enjoyed the Knuckles/Rouge levels. The characters controlled very well and some of the levels were fantastic (There was a Mario Galaxy type level that I loved). It was a shame that the base objective was just to find the randomly located items. It made it almost impossible to beat the level with a good score since you can't use the hints without lowering the score. The 'Hard' objectives were challenging, but they were in the same spot every time so it was easy to replay it and get a good score.

The Tails/Eggman levels were he weakest, imo, but I still had fun with them. They were just a basic semi-on-rails shooter. Nothing memorial, but not un-fun.

I even liked the kart-racing levels! It was pretty fun and it allowed you to cut corners for huge shortcuts, especially when you get the Chao racer/kart, that dude could FLY around the track.

And as other have said, the Chao garden was a fantastic little game. Who doesn't want to pump their pets full of drugs to make them better at fighting?

Here's an easy to understand graphic:

I'd rather expect disappointment and be pleasantly surprised than expect something good and be disappointed. Sonic Colors sucks.

Sonic Generations is the best. It's genuinely great. I still love Sonic Adventure 2's Sonic stages a lot, but that game has too much baggage weighing it down.

Sonic Adventure 2 is the one I go back to and play outside of the classic genesis games. Was playing some multi-player last weekend, so much fun.

Unleashed was also had good Sonic stages, but had some control issues in them and even more baggage than Adventure 2.

Generations and Colors are fine and all, but I'm throwing my hat in with SA1/2. I found them more fun overall.

Amazing:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 2

Great:

Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic CD
Sonic Generations (Classic Sonic)

Good:

Sonic Generations (Modern Sonic)
Sonic Advance 1/2/3
Sonic Rush 1/2/Colours
Sonic Colours
Sonic Pocket Adventure

Decent but flawed:

Sonic Adventure 1/2
Sonic Heroes (Yeah I don't think it's that bad)
Sonic 4 (Fix the physics and it goes under good)

Never played:

Sonic Unleashed
Sonic & The Secret Rings
That game where Sonic has a sword
Sonic 2006

GameGear Sonic games casually played, ranges from good to awful.

Kingdom Valley isn't too bad.

That's about it!
Radical Train (EXCEPT THE MACH SPEED PORTION) is the most playable enjoyable level. Kingdom Valley is okay, but you're forced to play as Silver for a portion + mach speed, as is Crisis City with the shitty boarding section + mach speed too.

UNCONVENTIONAL OPINION, INCOMING
This might sound crazy, but hear me out. I consider Sonic's movement and controls in 06 (for walking and running) better than Sonic's walking and running in Unleashed/Colors/Generations. Don't curb stomp me yet. While Generations has slightly improved movement from Colors, it still feels really unnatural with acceleration that starts too fast and goes too far. It makes for less precise movement and less tight controls. 3D spacial movement still not where it should be in Generations, (going off the demo)

Sonic's 06 movement and acceleration feels just about right. The homing attack is also generally very reliable. Where things start going to shit is everything else. Run into a wall and you stop in your tracks and must wait for Sonic to stand the fuck up. Do a kick-slide? Not only will it cause a frame drop, you are stuck kicking and moving forward until it is over. And good luck if all you wanted to do was a roll. I don't even know what the spin dash is for in this game. Bouncing almost works, but you're locked in position for it. Boost pads also remove control and make turning a spastic fight not to run off a cliff. Oh and the camera will fight you every step of the way.

The foundation for precision Sonic movement is there, it's just covered in heaps of shit and uncooperative design decisions. If they could just adjust current Sonic's movement to what it was there, it could really fix the sensation of steering an anchor on oil for Sonic's run/walk speed in Colors/Generations.

This shit has to be the hardest Sonic game that I've ever had the
dis
pleasure of playing. Like seriously. The first boss is the HARDEST boss.

I haven't endured any time with Generations yet. Sonic Colours had the obligatory brand new gimmicks (wisps) to try and spice things up, it's the typically automated game play with QTEs, speed panels, homing attacks without enough branching paths (at least on the first play through) Still the story was lite, the music was lovely the sights were wonderful so I'll pick that.

Also it makes me sad to think of the Sonic Adventure games, they were magical. Every single level felt like a little adventure, running down a collapsing building in speed highway, it was "so cool" the time travel and the fights with Chaos/Shadow were so epic. Heh I actually used to think it was as good as the mighty ocarina. Now you shouldn't have to go back and endure the screeching voice acting, the crude fields, even the highlight that is Sonic's levels are too automated and boring. Everything can seem magical as a kid.

If only there was any original parts in modern Sonic that was as exhilarating as racing Metal Sonic, exploring Angel Island as it burned down or manoeuvring up a collapsing sky sanctuary and reaching the space station.

I recall not knowing what to even do for that boss when I was little. I didn't finish that game until I was, like, 16.

Mmm... it's too bad your expectations for Colours were pretty high. :/

That pincer pit thing from Sonic 2 GG/MS is one my most feared bosses in history, if you manage to progress past the immobile death machine you'll probably die trying to fly the hang glider in the following zone. then again I haven't reached that zone since I was like 4 or 5, whenever I try to beat the first boss nowadays I just can't do it, tormenting stuff.

As much as I say that Im a Sonic fan, I have very limited experience with the series, I was able to play Sonic 1-3 but never played anything after that.

When it comes to Modern Sonic, I've only played Sonic Advance, Sonic Rush, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Generations but I liked them all. Sonic Unleashed Day stages were good, and as much people hate it, I kinda liked the Werehog parts too but they're just too long and breaks the pacing of the game. Colors and Generations are currently the best Modern sonic games to be honest. Only played the demo of Colors DS but it was basically Rush 3 + wisps.

However, Sonic 06 soundtrack really makes me want to play it but the recent LTTP thread tells me otherwise, might get it sometime in the future just to see how bad it is though.

Yeah, I'm a Sonic fan but didn't play much of the games. I've only played:

Sonic 1
Sonic 2 (completed)
Sonic 3
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2 (I think, this one was the one with City Escape and the Chao Garden right?)
Sonic Heroes (completed I think)
Sonic Generations (completed)

Just wondering, is CD any good?

It's impossible to please fans who simply won't accept anything but the Genesis games and physics, but the last three releases have been great games.

Colors>Generations>>>>Unleashed

Sonic Generations is the clear winner followed in the distance by Sonic Adventure, then Sonic Colors.

The all range from mediocre to 'Legendarily Awful', however.
