The Black Culture Thread |OT16| - I'm blacker than you'll ever be

Stumbled upon 2 fantastic podcasts recently:
Supercontext Podcast - Is probably one of the best media casts I've listened to. It's basically intense dissection of different books, comics, films, TV and music beyond just whether or not it's good or bad or the feelings it stirs but how it was made by our culture and feeds back into that culture, What some of the choices in the media mean, where they come from and the circumstances under which it was created. They've covered stuff from The Dark Knight, to Hannibal to SPECTRE and the comic series East of West. Of course the hosts are 2 40+ white guys but thankfully they are and always attempt to be self-aware, progressive and bring differing insight to what they discuss because some of the things you think they'd like being pop culture nerds are actually things they take alot of issues with. In fact, that self-awareness and progressiveness led them to recommend the other podcast:

Politically Re-Active: Despite it's start this summer, I'm still shocked I never knew this existed. Hosted by W. Kamau Bell and Hari Kondabolu, 2 of my favorite current minority comics discussing politics with guests like the likes of Roanne Gay, Jill Stein, Rachel Maddow and Shaun King.

I liked Birth of Nation and I don't consider my self hotep. The movie was of course overhyped, but considering it's budget and the scope of the story he wanted to tell it wasn't a terrible movie.

However most of the reviews for the film were savage on a level that I just haven't seen before. There were reviews whose thesis were "If you watch this movie, then you condone rape".

The fact that THIS is the version of "The Birth of a Nation" that gets essentially blacklisted, while the original "The Birth of a Nation" you know the same movie that led to the resurgence of the actual Ku Klux fucking Klan, a movie that literally inspired people to lynch other human beings, that movie is still regarded as an "essential part" of Hollywood's history.

You know any other year this wouldn't have bothered me as much. However, this is the same year Mel Gibson has a good chance to win best director. This is the same year where Casey Afleck has a good chance to win best actor. This is the same year Donald Trump got elected to become President of the United States.

I'm not not even angry it's just fascinating to watch Nate Parker ride waves of white guilt then be essentially lynched by the media within a 7 month time span. It highlights the fact as a black person you will always represent the entirety of your race. You are either lifting up the entire race as "one of the good ones" or you are "setting the entire race back".

There is no in between.

Not sure if this is your intention, but this post reads like there's virtually no criticism coming from black people/the black community for this film and/or black critics who criticized this film praised or even watched the original Birth of a Nation. Some of Birth of a Nation's strongest critics were black people, men and women, and you really can't toss them into the same boat as "the media/Hollywood" and expect these criticisms to stick (ex: Casey Afleck comparisons don't really mean anything when talking about black critics).

As for Mrs. Manky's "Birth of a Nation Hotep" comment, you ignored the part about Moonlight, which helps the context:

More racist and more homophobic. Hell, I'm waiting for the Nate Parker Hoteps to lose their shit if Moonlight gets more shine than BOAN does.

This isn't a criticism at black people who enjoyed Birth of a Nation, as opposed to criticism directed at potential critics of Moonlight, who will say Hollywood is supporting the "weakening" of black men (#Illuminati) if Hollywood shows more support for Moonlight than they do Birth of a Nation due to the main character in Moonlight being gay. These aren't regular BOAN watchers, but black people (men) who think Nate Parker's comments/past actions should have been ignored because it's all a conspiracy/fake news to keep a film with slaves fight back from succeeding.

The only thing this new fast and furious trailer shows is that Charlize Theron is playing Denise Richards in Undercover Brother

Will Cam Newton come out as Pansexual or a Inspector Gadget Villain before he retires from football?

Y'all should watch Celia on Netflix. It's a biopic show about a black Cuban singer.

I thought the drama and what not would up with my mama, but I feel like she don't want to watch it because she has to read subtitles by her comment of I don't understand what they're saying.

Any one read the comics from Valiant at all? Never touched the series but I wanted to find out which hero I should start my journey with: Shadowman? Ninjak? XO? Bloodshot? Since I know nothing about them, they all seem equally interesting

Thanks for the clarification I totally misread the post.

Yeah, I agree with you. My extend family are openly homophobic and I have no idea how to even explain to them that people can be black AND gay.

Smarmy ass is gonna make me have sweet dreams about taking a sledgehammer to his groin.

I'mma stop posting in this thread before I get banned, but if one more person tries to tell me Clinton didn't get more votes than Trump in this election regardless of what electoral college votes ended up being, I'm gonna straight up scream.

I'm more bothered that there are people who believe that Hillary Clinton getting more votes between the two major candidates means nothing.

It may not do anything, but it means something. It means the system is flawed. Even if this were the reverse, it's still flawed. But then we're saved from 4 years of struggle that's growing beyond American borders.

The elector system is fucked, but the time to tackle that was prior to the election, we all knew how the system functions it's not a surprise. People are just complacent until shit goes bad.

Shit went bad. So this is the time to try and fix it.

Yeah. I'm not a fan of this sort of system. Canada's been looking to reform from FPTP and we'll be better for it, but as is we've encountered minority governments so it isn't a large leap.

Y'all, though, I dunno. No way Republicans will want the system changed. It just worked for them.

The real reason why Kanye is running in 2020 is because of that one place in Austin wouldn't let him skip the line

The real reason Drumpf ran for president is because Roman Polanski got away and still got famous

I mean not a damn thing is going to change in this case it's just whose ox is being gored. There's no real political will on either side to change the system.

If you were fine with it for the past 8 years, don't start crying now because you didn't get your way.

This election has been so disingenuous, it's unreal.

Big difference in not getting your way and a 2+ million difference in the popular vote and EC results. That's without taking into account the news about Russian hacking, and also maybe having to ignore the last 10-12 years of Russian behavior globally.

This is getting out of hand, and it's not a damn crying Jordan meme because of the result.

I am kinda checked out at this point. Got folks on the Left talking about how minorities fucked shit up, and the right business as usual. Just going to make sure my shit is air tight. And wait for the moment folks realized they got conned. They going to need that heroin because they won't be able to go to the doctor.

Damn this is cold-blooded! :O

I will agree with you in that I hope they wake up soon. Many of those Trump voters are probably going to get rocked worse that many city-dwelling liberals if the Ryan Agenda goes through (to say nothing if Trump crashes the economy, or starts a war or etc.). At least many of the people in Blue States have, ideally, a State government that gives a crap.

If you were fine with it for the past 8 years, don't start crying now because you didn't get your way.

People have been hating on the EC since forever. It's just never been this bad and its likely to get worse given the way people are sorting themselves across the country.

So, how has everyone's day been so far?

One of the woman I work with last night came up to me out of nowhere and asked if I knew French. I told her I know Frere Jacque , random phrases, and omelette du fromage. She cracked up at that last one because I don't think she expected a Dexter's Lab reference in 2016. and then told me "it is good to know you are trying"

Yeah, she's from Cameroon I think. We have a small contigent of African continent refugees and immigrants at my second job (I learned a couple of months ago that Nebraska actually has the largest Sudanese refugee population in the United States) so the French-speaking all sort of formed into a clique.

It's kind of funny that I can't understand French but I can still hear the France-influenced accent vs the Quebec one when they're all talking together from my time in Canada.

The problem is that people will complain about EC being so bad and in 6 months everyone will act like nothing happened and go back to business as usual. It already happened before, so there's no reason to think it wont happen again. People don't like it, but not enough that they actually wanna do something about it.
