The Black Culture Thread |OT4| Learn to love the BBC

This dude's girlfriend on Catfish tonight made me realize how small this world is. She went to school right down the road from where I grew up.

Shit like that has happened to me. This really hot chick I grew up with was on The Real World as one of the sluts the guys pick up at the bar.
I remember a girl at my school was gonna be on MTV MADE but the school system didn't allow them to come, the girl ended up going on Tyra Banks show for her weight problem. Tyra didn't really do shit for her though, she shoulda tried Oprah.

Last time I be honest with you guys. Kpop gaf wouldn't think I was weird, maybe I will become a free agent.

Hey these young cats just don't know. I'm in my 30's and have been on the net long enouph to see all types of shit. It ain't even sexual it's just you gotta se it cause it's there, at our age you are so desensitized you need some weird shit to raise your eyebrow.

On another note I think I got this manual transmission shit down, took my new car to work no stalls no jumpy shifts.

Watched Platoon and SPR yesterday and today and both them films aged extremely well. Platoon still hits hard as fuck and rewatching SPV in 1080p, you realize how ridiculously well shot it is. if you froze every other frame of the movie shit would look like an award winning photograph. Not even the biggest fan of Spielberg, but you cant deny that that mans highs are better than every American director not named Scorsese and Stan Kubrick.

Like I said, some people simply refuse to have their world view challenged.

Take it from me, it's more difficult when it's just some people on the internet telling you what it's like. Folks have their families, friends, religion, etc. all telling them exactly the opposite. Hell, I bet you that they know women or minorities reaffirming their worldview IRL. They jump on the computer and everything's so different than they see it (and how everyone around them sees it) and they can't really accept it.

They do not have the "epistemic privilege of oppression." And even some people who are oppressed don't see it, or explain it away. That's to say that education will almost always be an uphill battle, unless they have seen the oppression and understood the oppression. Not even just on a personal level, but a systemic level as well.

... :/
Anyways, I'm still kind of irritated that Mighty Avengers is being done by Land. But maybe I can tolerate it if I don't know the source material? On the other hand, I'll probably be like "yup, that one's probably porn."

Yeah but it's the same people every time. There's a point at which it's not worth the effort you undertake to educate them when you could do something much more productive with that time.

I think I have a pretty good eye for it. Lol.

I usually find that the Europeans are best at the fake amateur shit, since it's actual watchable for me and at least they're trying. Minus some of the weird shit like fucking on a bus or a park rail. Some of the ones that I run across that are like, "Guy fucks two chicks at college party", where the guy just happens to be like 9", and the chicks are hot as fuck with fake tits are lol. I might as well just watch the pro stuff when it comes to that.

The professional stuff I like are few and far in between though.

why did i just read a dozen paragraphs of self-loathing victim shaming bullshit?

When I clicked the link I had to laugh because my friend worked on the set of Think Like A Man and he said one of the actors called that dude Romany "House Negro" Malco. So I didn't even have to read it to know it would be some bullshit.

You know that reminds me. Michael Ealy's cousin Victoria is beautiful. My boy was dating her until he found out she was using him for money.

hey man, he resented that shit.

problem is he used it as an opportunity to beat "the black community" about the head and shoulders with all the bullshit images that get thrust at it. And then he's complaining about the general education system. I guess that's the black community's fault too... And so he ignores the majority of people who aren't 'rapping and killing niggas' or making videos on worldstar hiphop, and says this is our problem. Complaining about Trayvon and not using the moment as an opportunity for self improvement? Man. So this dude is all over the place. He wants to be an outside of the box thinker, but its a shame even his frame was given to him by the media. Bill O'Reilly should love this guy.

My friend said he use to go on some stupid as fuck rants. He has some of them recorded but he won't unload them because he is scared the Producer he works for will fire him. I've also see recordings of a bunch of cast members just talking shit about Malco while standing around.

From what my buddy said is that he is a cool dude until he starts talking about the black community and then he won't shut the fuck up.

The best tits? Or what?
Yeah. Who were you referring too?

And USA shows are hit and miss by the episode. I was a diehard Burn Notice fan and this season has been a disappointment. Last season wasn't too great either. Psych delivers usually but even some of their episodes were lacking last season. White Collar is good. But Matt Bomer carries that show. Even the dumbest scenarios he plays it with that Rat Pack type swagger. I miss some of the shitty cartoons on USA. And haven't watched wrestling in years. Isn't the cat from MTV a wrestler now? Speaking of MTV what the hell happened to Cora?

Cora from real world new york? I remember that both her forehead and tittays were huge, would smash though. And yes i remeber USA used to show the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Super Mario cartoon. They aired duckman too back in the day.

EDIT: Man, Luther's ending was perfect.

yep. I am sad this is over. Idris talked about making movies I hope he means TV movies like they use to make for other canceled Mystery shows. In theory it would be like 1 new episode every couple of years....

And once again I make the mistake of reading the comments. It's like trainwreck I just gotta watch. Same with Washington Times stories.

Actually y'know what? On the subject, the dude mentioned education and you guys mentioned the public school system. I wanna ask about that:

Being in a military family, I went to seven (I think) different public schools before high school and college. The high school I went to was a pretty big place (4,000 students) in a middle-upper-class area and probably one of the most ethnically diverse in the country, the kind of place your parents move specifically to get you into. Kinda funny considering the place is right outside DC. The point is, I never attended a "failing school."

Is it teachers and faculty that don't care at those places? Or are under-trained? Or is it just lack of funding?

I know my cousins went to a high school where I think half their class graduated. One of my god sisters became part of an initiative down in Atlanta to transfer kids to some advanced placement school where she just graduated, and that seems to be doing real well. The only talk I hear about the failing school is from my parents' generation and they seem to mostly blame the kids. I guess that's just their perspective.

My parents went to school in the south during desegregation and both graduated at or near top-of class and got scholarships I think, so it's sort of a "I made it, so can you" stance I guess. Never mind the fact that I think none of their siblings did the same, many of which never went to high school.

Messed-up story: a few years ago while visiting relatives my mom heard my cousin recite some math lesson she learned and it reminded me of her own high school math lessons. Turns out the same teacher who taught my mom back in the 70's is still teaching today, and I think she was already fairly old back then.

The internet just seems like a bastion for people who can't do that, never have their world view changed about anything and keep crying about stupid shit. I'm growing tired of it.

I hear you. I am less concerned about folks who are clearly ignorant than I am about folks who are otherwise intelligent, except for that one issue that they can never, ever drop, or never, ever bend for, despite any and all logical or evidential proof. You'll never hear an apology. You'll never get an admission that says, "you know, I actually read what I just typed and I just realized that was the dumbest shit I've read in the last two or three days", or "you know, I never thought about it that way, thanks for opening my mind a little". I'd say it a form of fundamentalism, but they all pick a different issue to become fundamentalist about.

I really don't know that there are any simple answers for this. One of the more fucked up and complicated situations we have in the US.

Personally I feel like there is too little value in our society placed upon actual learning. In most public schools there are strong desires from the kids to get the fuck out because of an oppressive environment and temptation from the outside world to drop out and get a job. Add to that pressure inside the school against teachers using assessment standards that encourage them to push kids along the system rather than flunking them or trying to address the root of their learning difficulties. In higher education a lot of colleges also place the highest value on graduating or focusing on the current fad careers that advertise the highest pay scale.

And all of that goes without even mentioning the fact that education standards have been proven to be unbalanced, catering toward certain demographics over others. So many universally adopted teaching styles and standards of classroom participation are geared toward males. Look up Deborah Tannen's essays about gender in the classroom if you're interested, some really good examples of what is very much a systemic problem.

I really wouldn't even know where to begin with education reform because so much is broken. Huge paradigm shifts and changes are needed but the boards of education and longtime administrators in many higher-up positions in education are some of the most resistant to change out of anyone I've ever heard of, congress and politicians included.
