I finally binged (Not Bing-ed!) the first four episodes of The Boys the other night and... it's very uneven. The first episode was pretty good, the second was blah, the third was 2/3 blah, and the fourth was decent. My thoughts during watching was: Is Amazon broke? Have they pivoted to turning The Boys into a complicated relationship drama? Luckily, episode four gave me some hope that they're going to ramp things up, but this show is obviously meant for binging so that you, the viewer, can quickly forget the early slog-ish episodes. The whole season is fricking eight episodes--the epitome of what binge is for!
Anyway, I'm still optimistic that things will shift into high gear and Hughie will stop being such a whiny bitch. While I understand Frenchie's thirst for The Female, stop being so French and grow some balls, man! I like the original comic book concept of Stormfront better than the TV version's badly-written edgelord, which makes me share Homefront's disdain for her. I'm going to guess her demise is going to be quite cathartic... unless they keep her on to fill the girl Nazi power quota. Who knows! I do like how characters such as Stormfront and Mr. Edgar know that they can subtly manipulate Homelander due to his emotional fragility and ego, yet at the same time, they are rightfully fearful of him because of those exact same things... and because he's nearly invincible psychopath.
Oh, and if people like Antony Starr's performance as Homefront, may I recommend Banshee? Just sign this vague document in my hand first, and all of your pain will be replaced by the joy of Banshee. Don't mind the fine print! Just sign. Okay, fine -- don't sign! Man, I thought that would work! Anyway, It's not the greatest show ever, but I found it rather enjoyable. I don't think many people watched it --because who in the heck goes to Cinemax for TV shows -- but this little show somehow made it four seasons and was a fun watch.
Also, I think the whole sci-fi/fantasy entertainment sphere could use a moratorium on Patton Oswalt. The second I heard his voice, I rolled my eyes.

I actually liked episode 4, my gf did as well. It was a slower episode but it set the board nicely for the next few episodes. The season is definitely not as strong as season 1 but they still have time to turn it around. They just need to get the gang together and wreck some havoc.

What did she do in 79? We gonna find out. In the meantime, she was probably given compound V that allowed her to turn back the clock. Edgar clearly brought her in to keep Homelander under control, and if necessary, have the whole world turn against him and kill him.

A little bit into it, I’m feeling similar to how I felt in Season 1. The problem with the show, is that so many parts of it are just okay, rather than excelling.
Take for example, Butcher sneaking into the compound and finally seeing his wife again. This monumental event... feels completely phoned in, flat, and again, just okay, and that’s a formula so much of the show follows.
Some people say they’re waiting for the story to get exciting, but... it already has. Or it has tried to. The problem is always the execution.
Homelander being the most fascinating, frightening weirdo, and a genuinely wicked sense of humor, are the only things really buoying this show right now, and it was a similar situation for Season 1. Add in the utterly nihilist worldview (this works in conjunction with entertainment, not boredom), with pinches of woke, and the show is exhausting.
I also have to say, what is up with Butcher’s writing this season? He feels like a meme of his Season 1 self, like they got completely self-aware on the ‘badass’ thing, and are trying to recreate it, rather than letting it flow naturally. Is there a more cringe line in all of recent TV than yelling, ‘Give me wife back!’? Is he a fucking leprechaun now?

Yeah he feels off this time around, I wonder if we'll get an explanation of what happened between the end of season one and the start of season two when he just woke up on the road, surely something was done to him, drugged up or something, the character seems less focused this time around and too much "MY WIFE!".

Eh, that statement contradicts itself. His motivation was always his wife. Now that he knows his wife is alive, focusing on rescuing her makes sense. If anything, he's more focused this year.

I find the show really subversive. Whenever you think they're going the safe route there's a curve ball incoming. Don't know if the source material is super strong or if they just have smart people running it.

Hughie is basically living out 500 Days of Summer with a superhero. Every dorky thing he does is romantically rewarded, up to the point of singing along to Billy Joel.
If he goes pro-Butcher, it might be interesting. Frenchie is the most interesting of the bunch this season. Legit fucked up dude with a weird sort of kind heart trying to connect with a fucked up super killer. Somehow he and Kimiko are more interesting than every other relationship despite the absurdity.

I was about to recommend Banshee too because of Starr, though yah that last season is a bit rough. Makes sense Starr is going for a superman type role doesnt have to break his body apart like he did in banshee (from what i understand why the later season wasnt as action heavy)

So far it's pretty good but I definitely liked S1 more.
Homelander is still great and hist part of the story is what keeps the show interesting. But the entire segment about the "good" guys has been rather boring and lacking in direction, it's like they have no clear goal besides staying alive, and the few times that big things happen they just come across as underwhelming.

Personally I feel sorry for Butcher. His wife won't leave the kid because of her motherly love and even if Homelander would stop being an obstacle Butcher wouldn't accept the kid to live together as a family. If the show is going to continue this storyline in a typical manner we can probably expect Butcher dying this season (fyi I haven't read the comics).

Ep4 was a sleeper and then got proper creeper with the focus squarely on Homelander becoming unhinged. It's pointing in the right direction but could do with some sprinklings of action alright.

I don't remember how many times I laughed during the first season, but this one has had me crack up quite a few times. It's definitely delivering on that front and the egregiously creepy homelander stuff. Guy is damn good in this role. The freaking desperate tongue movements, the fleshy pout, oh my.
Other than that, I do agree that the plot for the main gang seems clumsy here and there, though the encounter with The Deep was hilarious. Oh and that cult meeting with the submissive feminist had me laugh so hard... I'm wondering what nefarious plans the cult has for him once they get him back into The Seven.

I thought it was a pretty good episode. The pieces are moving in an interesting direction. It's going to be Homelander and Stormfront against Deep, Maive, and maybe A-Train. Can't wait.
