The Car Thread

Just a follow up to this question regarding the Maverick.

We took our Lightning in for a recall and they had it for a week so they always give us a loaner and we have dealt with this same salesman for maybe close to 20 years and he always gave us something off the lot to drive as a loaner

While we were waiting on him we spotted a Maverick Lobo that we were looking at and he asked if we wanted to drive that for a few days

My wife grew up on a working farm and she is 100% country girl at heart and she loves trucks but she also likes to drive a little fast and she fell in love with driving this little truck

So we wait now for about 3 months as we have a Velocity Blue on order just like this one

had a company supplied mx-5 (current miata) and it was a beast, only problem was the soft top, had a bunch of long journeys to complete every week that made Noise Cancelling headphones an absolute must.

Thing kept up with every fast thing on the Autobahn up to ~210kph including performance AMGs and Cayennes and took corners like a mafaka, lovely thing.

I would love to try their next thing.
 
Went on to do rust removal, started off kinda sloppy with sanding away rust, started Bondo, clingged that to the spot, targeted the area again with sanding, rust adhesive as well, and finally paint to save thousands from a mechanic. Has anyone here done rust removal before?
 
About every EV drivers worst fear, my Lightnings battery pack wont accept a charge anymore and must be replaced, thankfully its under warranty though likely going to trade it now with how much they have to do to replace the battery and what issues that may cause

Yeah thank goodness for the battery warranty, service desk said it would be around $40k to replace out of pocket if was outside warranty

Working on a trade now, just don't like the idea of dropping that battery and installing a new one, afraid too many things can break in the long run now
 
I got a Kona EV during covid (long story....doesn't matter) anyway the battery completely failed at 10,534 miles (little over a year and 1/2 into the lease). They took the car for 4 months and installed a brand new battery...the service bill was $56,789 dollars but it was covered under warranty.

My lease expires next week, i have 31,000 miles on the car and I am about to buy it out.
I just cannot find another EV with the milage that this one has for that cheap or I would trade up.

I have a 2024 Ioniq 5 (lowest trim level) on lease as well. Love that car but no way on earth is it worth the sticker price of $50k...will not be buying this one out.

Stickers have gone insane and honestly I still love EVs and just wrapping up on just keeping this Lightning they put me in

Once someone feels that instant torque of an EV its hard to drive an ICE powered vehicle again
 
$56,789 is a helluva bill my friend, that's pricey! It really is touch and go with the EVs, it seems reasonable as long as that warranty kicks in.

Tell me ABOUT IT.

The Parts and Labor for the battery was $11,000 MORE than the car actually cost. I asked Hyundai why they wouldn't just buy the car back and give me another vehicle and they said it had to do with some litigation they had with LG over the run of batteries that were defective from the factory...so they made me wait.

Worked out for me in the end. I have an ev with 31k miles in total but the battery only has 20k miles on it.

Ford at least has an 8 year 100k mile warranty on their battery system so thats decent coverage at least

Plus my home where I keep my EV is 100% off grid solar powered with a level 2 charger on its own 100 amp service so its free "fuel" at this point

Yeah for sure. Being in Texas our energy costs are great and with solar panels I might pay $8 to provide "fuel" for three ev's (two other guys at the company) all month long. I know the range can be a deal breaker for some folks, but the cost to drive these things can be way cheaper given your set up.

Range anxiety is real for sure for a lot of people

I get asked often about it even from family members

Or the all time classic what happens in the event of a massive snow storm and you get stranded and your battery runs out

People have zero clue how efficient these things can be sitting "idling" with just running the heater

Yeah, I get that all the time and living where I do and dealing with the clients I have, I get questioned aggressively sometimes about owning them.

I understand that I do not represent the ideal situation here, but at the same time there are so many misconceptions about EV's. I've had several, and some are completely awful (the Rivian R1T was a total garbage pile...but luckily I was able to flip it and not loose my ass) but the ones from Chevy, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, etc don't get a ton of press but are great examples of how affordable and dependable EV's can be.

Living in Texas I have tesla super chargers all over the place and a level 2 at home, so personally I don't have issues traveling in and around my home state (to Baton Rogue, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Midland, etc) but I know that isn't the case for everyone.

Texas solar panels sounds like a good investment, especially if you can charge your own. Good call.

Curious if you have ever run into any "Karens" in TX over your EV?

I have only run into one male Karen that tried unhooking me from a charger at a Buc-ees saying something about how bad EVs were for the environment

I usually use those charge stops to walk around a bit but had to stay with the truck as I figured he would come back

None that I have ever experienced.

That is a sure fire way to Fuck Around and Find Out. I am all for respecting that folks can have their own opinions but "don't tread on me/come and take it" means the same thing in Texas as it does in Virginia...except instead of rattlesnakes on license plates, here we just have an image of a cannon.

Honestly I would give the shirt off my own back to help someone, I really would (metaphorically speaking...im a husky guy my shirt would look like a dress on most people), but don't be a preachy asshole especially if I am minding my own business.

Most guys ask me why a big guy like me drives a smaller SUV, then i give them a ride and we go from zero to 60 in less than 4 seconds, the look is always the same...every time. As a dude I guess torque is a universal language or something.

The torque on these things are insane

This Lightning with the extended range battery does that 0-60 around that same time in 3.8 seconds which is insane for a full size pickup truck

I wish I would have pre-ordered the Lightning instead of waiting for the Rivian R1T to arrive. By then the lightning pre-orders were gone and the line to get one was huge. A friend has one and I love riding in it...lighting as a model name is no joke AND it has all room as regular F150...so roomy AF.

I pre-ordered that before covid and it was a completely POS the day they dropped it off at my house. Arrived at my house with 2.5 miles on the truck. I opening the front passenger door, tried to close it and the door just bounced off the frame. It wasn't lined up properly...closed the door called Rivian only to be told I would have to wait 45 days for service (keep in mind I live in Houston...where one of their only repair factories are). Went out to drive it the next day, the "wood trim" in the front had peeled up on the front dashboard overnight. Tried to close the tonneau cover and the motorized engine on the cover stalled and stopped working. I ended up with 25 miles on the truck then sold it. I will never buy another of their vehicles and I would love to have the money back I invested in their stock.

I looked hard at the Rivian but after talking to other owners I heard a lot of issues like this and it scared me off and here I am having a dead Lightning but Rivian was my first choice, love its look

Well not anymore I am buying this new one even though it a little less optioned its still all I need plus Ford is doing that Power Promise giving me their level 2 pro charger with free installation.

Works out because we were needing a second charger since we just bought my wife an IQ Caddy
 
Side question to the car people

How in the world, with todays tech, do all cars that have 360 or even just front facing cameras not have the ability to record like Tesla?

Recording stuff requires a drive to store clips and modern automotive industry is looking to save money on everything. It always surprises me when an expensive car has a laggy system that's running worse than a budget tablet.

Plus in some parts of the world (like Austria or Switzerland) recording is forbidden and you can't install even your own windshield camera to protect yourself in case of an accident or vandalism.

Things I learned today that recording in places like that is illegal

With how expensive cars can be today I would just think it wouldn't add that much cost to just give me a spot to plug in a drive and record for places that allow it
 
Yeah it's related to privacy laws that prohibit recording people in public without their consent. And from what I read more EU countries joined the list not long ago, including Portugal. There are huge fines if you get stopped by the cops, I wonder how many tourists travelling between countries end up having the most expensive vacations of their lives.

I think it should be better regulated. 99% of drivers will use the camera for protection, not to spy on their neighbors or random people on the street.

Thx. I didn't order it. I've wanted one for a little while and I've been watching incoming stock at local Nissan dealers. This had the Real Red/Super Black paint, red leather trimmed interior, Performance model and manual, which is what I wanted. I also got it at about $2.8k below MSRP and 2.9% financing.

$40k, isn't that like more than half of its worth? This is why I got rid of my Volt. Had some sensors go bad and the warranty went out, battery would have been worth 85% of what I could sell it for.

Now driving a sweet Coyote V8 F150 in flame blue.

Yeah it was a $90k truck and just signed on a lower trimmed truck and picked her up yesterday

Nothing beats the sound of the V8 but the torque on these EV trucks are insane considering how heavy they are

Oh, I know. I love the torque of an EV! That's about the only thing I like over ICE currently. At this point I'm just looking for longevity over efficiency though.
