So what?
Does that make it not sexist? Or at least free from such accusation?
It invalidates the point that the image was born in the sexist mind of CDPRs employee.

What's funny is that you missed my point.
If you aren't going to read the thread then why are you here exactly? To act superior and claim some sort of high ground?
Also, I know that one might be annoyed if their favorite game/developer is being slighted by someone but geeeezzzzzzzzzz some of you can be really nasty in your remarks attacking the Chinese Room.
You mean the first trailer from a few years back? Yes, that had a women in it and dudes with guns. Still don't see it as really sexist myself, but I can see why others can. But that is not the thing the tweet refers to. They pick an out of context image.
The gaming industry is in the process of maturing on this subject. CDProjekt also. Judging them on things from 10 years ago isn't really fair I think. In The Witcher 3, those cards and such weren't there.
What do you mean by a whitewashed world? In The Witcher 3 that is the setting of the game, a northern kingdom. It would have white people in it, just like northern Europe would have in the Middle Ages. They even deal with things like racism and such in some quests.

Whether it's "objectively" sexist or not is entirely irrelevant: anyone in a marketing department would know that there would be people who would find it sexist, even if the grand beholder wouldn't. That's the controversy that would be stirred up (and it was and now is again) and is good for promotion.
I specifically cited that CDPR has been dealing with these modern culture war issues with all of their games going back to TW1. First with the cards, then the Playboy spread for W2 (as well as general sexuality), then with Ciri's peekaboo costuming and the all-white-people-only world of the W3.
In my statement, I'm not taking a side on any of the controversies, I'm just saying that CDPR has been dealing with this since their infancy and their general MO is to say nothing. Which has been working for them because people will argue for them based on their own political leanings.

Okay, The Chinese Room. Have you looked at your name? With founders called Pinchbeck and Curry? Cultural misappropriation much? I guess they would know a thing about discrimination.
Huh?
Geralt is an existing character and he is straight. He's not going to start courting dandelion in his related quests, ever.
It's OK to not like any version of sex, but it's also not sensible to expect every taste to be catered to in a game where you play as a well defined character.
A lot of developers I would take the criticism with some weight, but I just can't take them seriously, gone to the rapture was so so bad and here they are calling out a factually superior Dev in a childish tweet. Just reeks of a want for attention
What's courting dandelion? Never heard this term.
Sure, they still aproved and supported it though. It invalidates the point that the image was born in the sexist mind of CDPRs employee.
Ask the people who made the claim but having the only we've seen from this game look like that and in that position, it's not hard to see where that comment comes from. What makes it sexist in the first place? what is sexist in this context? especially without context in this instant.
What's courting dandelion? Never heard this term.
For real why are they called the Chinese room? is that some type of inside joke.
But the thing is, there will ALWAYS be someone that finds something sexist to a degree, that's why the term "objective" is important, because subjective standards will NEVER be unified.

Like, I'm sorry rapture didn't sell a ton but don't take that out on CDPR

The name apparently comes from a thought experiment about computer AI.For real why are they called the Chinese room? is that some type of inside joke.

Correct that means everything is sexist or racist or homophobic. Fuck the context and objectivity. The creative sphere would be a beak canvas and super tame.
The irony being literally no one defending the trading cards, which ironically you would know if you read the thread!
Your comment is ridiculous and proves that other posters point man.
The cards are harmless. Crass? Maybe so, but again it's nude drawings that cause no real harm.
As for the rest of your argument I don't agree. No one needs to be a straight man to enjoy sexually stimulating material, regardless of sexual preference.
Someday Chinese Room will make a game ambitious enough to include people, and then we'll see how they handle it.

????
They should have used a man with his head blown off and his brains exposed. Then it would have been perfectly okay.

The irony in fair representation is that it allows women to be dedicated as they wish to be. A model? Probably sexy, if not sexy, then I'm sure they'll say or refuse the job.
An in game character? In line with their narrative and story. That is equal representation. To be equal is not to be censored, for better or worse.
Can't even be tame, because then the sexist argue abt comes from covering up too much![]()
Dandelion is a male bard character in the games![]()
Lol Dandelion is a character in The Witcher.
It should be "courting Dandelion".
If you are joking then nvm.
My name at the weekend is Dandelion, so I think GAF is referring to all those who try vigorously to court me on Saturday and Sundays.
If anything positive comes out of this thread, I hope it's a neologism of "Courting Dandelion".
Dandelion is a male character in the Witcher games.
Dandelion is a character in the witcher srries and my phone autocorrected the D to a lowercase. Sorry.
Geralt as a character, at least in the early short stories and early books, is intentionally presented as immature and hypocritical, which is why he always struggles with choosing the lesser evil. Like, he's a literal manchild in some of the books. This aspect is the entire basis of The Witcher 1 where the whole game revolves around the consequences of Geralt's behaviour and hypocrisy. Also why it has the best story of the three games.
In the case of sexism, you could argue that Geralt is to some degree chauvinistic but that's intentional. In the books, I don't think its really played to Geralt's benefit as he's taken advantage of quite often and characters often admonish his immaturity.
To CDPR's discredit, this aspect doesn't really come into play in the games. Geralt doesn't really suffer any significant consequences for what he does and I don't think he ever gets called out for it either, except for a single scene in The Witcher 3 which is still presented as a joke rather than anything serious. They've ditched the cards but sex scenes are still presented as a reward for doing something "positive", like saving Mottle, beating Ves and Jutta, or helping Sasha.
Simplifying sexual relationships to input, output and reward is like in every video game with sex but this is the one department where CDPR hasn't really improved at all. Again, you get no cards anymore but Mottle gives you a shortcut key that saves a fair bit of backtracking if you sleep with her (which you don't get if you refuse). ShockingAlberto actually wrote a really good article recently regarding this phenomenon which is very well worth reading.
Complaining that the Witcher is sexist is like complaining Game of Thrones is sexist. They're based on books that try to depict medieval times ffs.
Lmao I just came back to say I figured that out from subsequent posts. whoops. Thank you.
Shit does that mean that all sexual images of man and woman, in atypical poses and dress is sexist? like when that conversations starts and ends. What's considered all right and not all right given the context being portrayed, plus that will butt heads with creativity in general.
lol. No.Complaining that the Witcher is sexist is like complaining Game of Thrones is sexist. They're based on books that try to depict medieval times ffs.
Because exploitation of women is totally not a thing, right? As long as everyone agrees, yeah?
Narrative and story do not exist in a vacuum. Considering all the bullshit women put up with, in this industry especially but also in general, it's a bit sad that CDPR would go with an image like that to promote their game.
So does Dragon Age but that isn't sexist.
