The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

I tried every monitor adjustment I can (with this monitor anyway) and end up on blue with various shades of black/brown/copper. I guess I'll just have to settle for being on Team Objectively True

So my mother shouting with all of her might saying its white.. this is crazy, I really can't see any white from this.

I just don't get the "white" thing.

If it was my job to hire a Photoshop artist and they couldn't immediately tell that the dress in that picture was blue, then they would be turned away immediately. If they could tell that the white balance was off in that picture, and that what looks like brown/gold should actually be rendered as shades of dark grey, then they'd remain in contention. If they also gave a remark about how ugly that dress is, then they'd be hired.

I see black and blue. WTF is wrong with me? O.o

Seriously though this is so weird.

Switch off the room light and crank up The brightness on your phone, now look again lol

Sometimes cameras screw up and their pictures do not accurately reflect reality. This is one of those cases. The actual lace is black, but, due to overexposure, the image's pixels of the lace are gold. If you see black, your eyes are being fooled. It's as simple as that.

Hu, apparently this is some sort of internet sensation. This morning I saw it as white and gold here on GAF. Then my sister came running in later this evening and asked me...it looked blue and black.

Came back to GAF...pic is blue and black.

maybe just giving a remark on how ugly the dress looks like is enough to hire them

If you already dead convinced in your consciousness about the color, is you not gonna swayed again?

LOL Because both my mother and me wouldn't back from each other.

You're really missing the point. I have no color blindness at all, and I haven't 'seen' it as really black and blue either. The problem is purely of perception, not of sense.

See this, A and B are the same color, but you can't actually see that without assistance:

Perception can be just as fixed, it just matters if you can find that pathway in your brain to be able to switch it or not. Color blindness really has nothing to do with it.
And you missed the point if you think I'm talking about color blindness (though it can factor in).

Color separation is an art of your mind, for all humans. I have been trained on this in a scientific context in university (though as a designer... I am not a researcher myself).

After the image has been processed by your eye (so this is not color blindness we're talking about here), your brain has to make artistic (not objective) decisions about how to draw lines between colors. And these lines might be rather arbitrary... Derived from cultural context among other things.

People draw different lines between color categories and it has nothing to do with how "accurate" certain peoples' eyes are.

None of this is a surprise if you know anything about colour science.

I can accept some people seeing blue (I mean, it is "blue" but I believe that's because of the shadow) but how does anyone see black here?

Yeah... I have a properly calibrated monitor with a full gamut (range of colour) and I can bring up "black" as a reference, and in no way is the colour in that dress (expect maybe in the deepest shadow) black.

Yeah I was saying the same thing all afternoon here at work. Everyone here was saying the white just looked like it had a slight shadow cast over it.

Then..it all changed..

Back in page 10 or so I kept saying white and gold and saying otherwise was crazy. Now a few hours later I come back and lo and behold... it's blue and black, and I fail to see a white and gold dress now! I still see the colors as light blue and brown when I hide most of the photo, but otherwise blue and black. Damn..

It's overexposed. It is black and blue. Both just very washed out because of the overexposure. I saw white and gold at first as well.

First look white and orange

Scrolled to bottom of page and saw the blue&black dress

Scrolled up and it was blue and red

Left thread

Came back a few minutes later and it was white&orange again

Repeat what I did last time and its blue and orange

I'm leaving this thread :'(

That's condescending as shit - perceptual scientists are discussing this picture now.

I've studied that side of things as well and I'm quite familiar with colour constancy and colour illusions.

What I'm finding interesting is that people don't perceive the white in the same area as white... and thus are failing to calibrate their understanding of the blue next to it.

Well, I guess if you have piss poor eyesight like me then it's totally possible that my eyes are seeing things that are not really like that.

Just curious, does this make any difference?:

People's gamma settings are probably messed up too on top of RGB. Thus resulting in blacker browns and darker blues.

And?

Somethings are complete fucking mysteries to people, but to others they're understood to the point where it gets nothing but a shrug of the shoulders.

Seriously? You see the left side as gold? Is it gold and black? Or just straight up gold; the light areas is light glinting off and the dark areas not reflecting light? And because you see that as gold, you also see the fabric to the right as white and gold?

It's gold with some lighter areas. The dress is gold and white. Though I could see the white as being blue, but it more just looks like white with some shadow on it.

Nah, they need to explain where the blue light is coming from. This is obviously being shot in a retail store - not a place where you're going to have deep blue lighting. Also, the yellow light all over the floor and the immediate surroundings makes it virtually impossible for the dress to be white yet exclusively bathed in blue light apart from everything else in the scene. Where in retail are you going to have a blue spotlight shining on one rack of clothing?

Seriously blew my mind when it changed. I was actually really upset initially, and thought everyone was playing a huge prank, and then it switched as I was scrolling past it

And then I ended up staying up ridiculously late to try and make it happen for my friend, waving a laptop in her face and screeching.

EDIT: Initially it was white and gold for 30 mins, whilst she saw it as black and blue, then it changed for me, then it changed for her, then I went back to seeing gold and white.

I've only seen white and gold so far. No one's tricks have worked for me yet :( HELP ME SEE BLACK AND BROWN GAF!
I've never seen it like blue and black after a day of different contexts, different devices, different lighting...

White and gold all day...

That's because it is white and gold and anyone saying it's anything else is trolling. I have to say this is the most elaborate and wide-spread trolling I have ever seen. But no matter what you do with your screen settings or room lightning or anything else, a white pixel in a picture will not turn blue or a gold pixel black.

You have bright white in the background, the blue is blue you maniac.
