The bunny thread yesterday sparked this idea, how are the cooking skills of the fellow GAF'er? Can't even boil an egg, or prepare 7 course meals daily, doesn't matter. We just want to see :)

It should still be early for most of you so you have the whole day to decide what you're going to be making. Pictures of progress (while cooking) and finished dish will be very appreciated.

What I'm going to do!? Well, it's going to be a first for me making this. Without giving away too much; it's going to involve seafood, vodka and linguini. (trying to invent some killer dish to impress my parents when they come over this Christmas) It's 15:35 over here so don't expect to see some mouthwatering stuff for some hours from my part :)

Here is a pic of _some_ of the ingredients I plan on using:

Uh, it's 9:45 in the morning here in the east coast USA... 6:45 in the west coast. You aren't going to get many replies for a while, we haven't even ate breakfast yet :D

SWEDISH PERFECTION
I was thinking of making buns (or maybe they're called rolls?) tonight, maybe with vanilla cream filling. Da-YUM!

Won't look exactly like that, but you get the idea. :p

Although that's not my dinner, it'll be spaghetti and meatballs or something.

It's done... and it tasted ORGASMIC!! (let my uncle next door and roommate taste and they were quite excited as well.

After marinating the king prawns in olive oil, LOADS of garlic, fresh parsley and seasoned with Cayenne pepper for about 4 hours. I fried them with the marinade in an uber hot wok. Just so they get a nice pink colour. Cool the pan with a lot of vodka and torch it, flambeé baby!

Once most of the alcohol is gone get rid of the flames (put a lid on it for a second) and put the shrimp plus that delicious sause aside. Keep half of the liquid in the pan. Throw the finely chopped spring onions plus fresh parsley in there and fry them for a half a minute. Put some flower in the pan to thicken the sauce and about 6 cherry tomatoes cut in half. Poor in cream so you get a nice amount of sauce. Let is simmer for a while until the skin of the tomatoes is just about to turn wrinkley (if this happens you're already too late)

Scoop in the linguini you've cooked beforehand, WITH a bit of the cooking water. This makes the sause better as a lot of the flavour of the pasta is in there. Throw the shrimp with the rest of the sauce in. Make sure the sauce sticks to the pasta. Flavour to taste with salt and pepper.

The bread is just freshly baked bread (not mine) soaked in olive oil and seasoned with Italian herbs.

That plate is 12 inches across, so it's a LOT of food. :) Goddamn, that tasted good!

Probably some pepporoni pizza Hot Pockets or some omelets with mozzerella cheese...with Frank's Red Hot sauce on top. Yum yum.

Only "foods" I know how to "cook" involve the microwave, or toaster. Sometimes I even use the oven to cook a digiorno pizza or something. Though I pretty much live off peanut-butter and honey sandwiches (eating one this very second). I think I'll eat out tonight.

Hmm...I'm having the typical single guy meal. Pizza, or maybe I'll go to the grocery store and get some hot wings and hot pockets.

Eating an entire tub of Rocky Road icecream while I watch Oprah.

Tivo rocks. Now we can make this happen at anytime of the day. Class during Oprah? No problem. You work during the day? No problem. You find out your Rocky Road stash is depleted right as Oprah is about to start? No problem. Fuck yeah!

I haven't cooked almost all summer and the cool weather has me in the mood. Thinking of making pasta with portabello mushrooms, garlic and tempeh in tomato sauce along with roasted broccoli with garlic. Sounds perfect on a day like this. Mmmm.

The last good thing I made was a corn and cheese souffle. mm that was good. I'll probably make that again since I have all the ingredients.

Ah, you guys dissapoint me! What the fuck will you do when a girl comes over?!

You've probably heard of the saying "the road to a guys heart is through his mouth" or something. This counts for girls as well!! You have no idea what girls think of guys who can cook extremely well. Hell, it's gotten me laid more than once :p

Anyways, try to make the best of it tonight. I don't want to be the only one who bust his balls :(

Hooker, looks great and sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Are you sure the flower step was required, since you added the cream? It's actually very close to a traditional Vodka Sauce recipe, with a little flash added. So if that was purely coincidental, I think the spirits were guiding you. :D

Try vermouth and dicing the Romas, but keep all the other ingredients, for a terrific but lighter scampi.

Edit: Oh, and I'm serving Jambalaya that I made on Saturday. Shrimp, Chicken, and Andouille sausage with creole seasoning, thyme, garlic, bay leaves, parsley, celery, onion, green bell pepper, green onions, chicken stock, and rice. Came out terrific.

I have to work tonight, at 8pm. I'll be going out for dinner.

The sauce was a bit watery because I hadn't dried off the spring onions and parsley. So a bit of binding was nessesary.

I was thinking of cutting the cherry tomatoes once again, but I was talking to my roommate so I had to rush a little, didn't have time to cut them again. They tasted great though. My uncle thought that I burned them above a flame first before chucking them in.

And I just had Vodka lying around (I always do hehe) so I tried that. I'll give the vermouth a go next time!

Not really actually. There aren't many things you can do with chicken thighs except for frying them, stew them, BBQ them.

I'm no kitchen prince by any means whatsoever, that's why I'm so glad this turned out fucking awesome :)

Looks good Oli!

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Here's the result. The dough didn't want to rise at first. I was worried I had killed the yeast people. Poor buggers. :(

But it picked up later on, when I left it alone for quite a long while. Anyway, took two damn hours all in all...so I was really worried when putting them in the oven...worried about forgetting about them. :p hehe

I think they turned out quite well...although...I have yet to taste them. :|

EDIT: I just tried one...holy shit...2 hours well spent! :D

have any good recipes for chicken thighs?

2 Teaspoons Olive Oil
1 cup thinly sliced onion
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup of thinly sliced green bell pepper
1 cup of thinly sliced red bell pepper
1/2 cup drained canned chopped mild green chilies
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs
1 cup of chicken broth
1/4 cup of water
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice.

Steps:

1. In a medium Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium heat, warm oil until hot but not smoking. Add onion and cook for 4 minutes. Add garlic and cook an additional 2 minutes. Stir in bell peppers and green chilies, and cook 5 minutes, or until vegatables are softened.

2. Stir in coriander, cumin, oregano, and salt. Add the chicken and stir to coat. Add the chicken broth and water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 20 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer 2 chicken thighs to each of 4 shallow bowls.

3. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and lime juice. Add the cornstarch mixture to the suacepan and stir to combine. Bring to a boil and cook until the sauce has thickened, about 1 minute. Spoon the sauce and vegetables evenly over the chicken.

Serve with sliced baguette bread, with a saucer of Balsamic Vinegar for a dipping sauce.

yeah that does sound pretty good. Too bad my chicken thighs aren't boneless

Not a problem, actually. The original recipe calls for bone-in thighs. I just copy/pasted from my own recipe book(I have boneless because it's easier on the person eating). If they have skins, I would advise removing those, though. Else you'll have a very oily sauce.

You can take the bone out pretty easily though. Takes some force but it's doable. Some precision cuts and just yank it out

Also, the bones have a lot of taste in them so :)

olimario is the winner so far.

I can cook, but I don't have anything to cook up. I think I'm just going to microwave some El Monterey bean & beef burritos. They have cinnamon or something in the tortilla part, so they are extra tasty.

Thanks for the tips guys. Im gonna try making that tonight.
Im missing quite a few of the ingredients

1 cup thinly sliced onion
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup of thinly sliced green bell pepper
1 cup of thinly sliced red bell pepper
1/2 cup drained canned chopped mild green chilies
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice.

are there any substitutes for the two spices?

Not really. Some people may substitute caraway, but I'm pretty confident you don't have that either. The spices are very important in this dish. I think you'll dig it.

I would advise against trying if you lack the peppers and onions.

Smoke and blunt before hand for the authentic Jamaican experience

wow goreomedy, I'm making that recipe right now. The smell is intense. Even without the chicken that sauce smells awesome. Is this some kind of indian dish?

Well after my protein shake, I made a huge salad using romaine lettuce, garden variety mushrooms, tomatoes, snap peas, and green peppers with a raspberry vinagrette dressing. Then afterward I am preparing a nice pork loin broiled. Before I broil it I massage it with olive oil add some garlic and pepper and the rest takes care of itself.

I made myself a hamburger, toasted the bun, put some mayonaise, mustard and ketchup on it. Ate it with some Ginger Ale. Had some vanilla ice cream with choclate chips afterward.

It's actually a southern dish.

Most things I cook are variations on a few basic themes.

Chicken + veg in sauce
-Half an onion
-Half a pepper
-Mushrooms
-1 chicken breast

Whack the chicken in a wok, once that begins to brown, whack the vegetables in. Then add sauce - I don't know what you have abroad but over here, we have Blue Dragon sauces. They're little sachets of sauce for dishes like this, all sorts of flavours, sweet and sour, thai green curry, spizy sezchuan (sp?) tomato... Serve with rice/noodles/pasta, whatever suits. Curry sauces also work. It's the same meal underneath it all but the sauce is what makes it tasty. I've not gotten bored of this meal yet heh heh :)

Exchange the chicken for minced beef, throw in either spag bol sauce or chili sauce (the premade stuff) and away you go. I know some people will screw their noses up at using the premade sauces but I don't like to spend forever cooking. What with cooking, eating and washing up, you can spend a good hour on even one of those easy meals. I don't eat too early either - I usually cook around 7.30/8ish. Once my gym card comes through, that'll be less time I have to spend cooking...

Also, it's not like my mum and dad were great cooks and have recipes to hand down. It's hard enough finding meals that we all like haha. Thankfully I don't have to deal with that much any more.

Still one day, I'll learn how to make stuff from some crap I have laying around in my
