Need to get back into this series. Read Consider Phlebas years ago and loved it. I have Excession but found the first parts pretty plodding. Wonder if I should try Player?

Excession is probably the slow starter of the group. However, it really a pays off for those that have been keeping up with the series. Player of Games picks up much more quickly.

Logged in to Amazon yesterday and Hydrogen Sonata was recommended to me. Got very excited until I double checked it was a pre-order not a purchase...

I have three other (unrelated) books then I can start on, Hydrogen Sonata. Anyone else pick it up yet?

Me. About 40% done. It's pretty good but it's still in the build-up phase really. I can't help but feel there'll be a big reveal about the Sublimed before the end. Not as good as Excession yet, but still good.

I just finished Use of Weapons.

Those two major reveals towards the end of the book were very powerful indeed, partially thanks to the rather interesting structure of the book.

Indeed. Very unique book.

I loved re-reading it with the knowledge of the ending.

Oh yes, I will thoroughly enjoy re-reading it.

The the chapter with the bone chair, and everything leading up to it, was so amazing on your first read-through - but knowing that the person you read about on the very first page is the Chair maker will make for an interesting read.

General culture stuff (spoilers?)

I must say that I am disappointed by the fact that Earth is not the origins of the humanoids found throughout the galaxy. It just hard to believe that second, or more, human-like (if not identical) species has developed independently throughout the galaxy.

Bump. Just picked the first two books up from the library a couple of weeks ago and finished them pretty quickly. Amazing books and the Player of Games is my favorite.

Just finished Feersum Endjin. Not technically a Culture book, but still very good even if it ends a bit too quickly.

I've been thinking a lot about how you'd adapt the Culture series for the big screen. Consider Phlebas could probably be condensed into a 2-hour movie. I'm thinking Natascha McElhone would be a pretty good Balveda, but can't really think of who would do justice to Kraiklyn.

The Player of Games would have to be a TV mini-series. I can't think of anyone better to play Jernau Morat Gurgeh than Patrick Stewart.

I happen to be reading The State of the Art right now and pretty depressed knowing that my collection of Culture books will never get any larger. :(

Fuck cancer.

Over the past four years, I've been reading these novels. At first started with Excession, but then I realised I didn't really understand what the hell was going on, So I decided to start from the beginning.

There's too much to say about these books. They make me incredibly happy because everything about them are goddamn wonderful. They make me so damn sad because Earth is a goddamn control planet. I finished A Hydrogen Sonata yesterday and can't bear to think there won't be anymore. It's a bloody shame.

Where are the movies. I will direct them if I have to.

I started reading through these books again for the gazillionth time. I still don't understand why most people rate 'Consider Phlebas' as low as they do and even suggest not reading it until after reading a couple of other books to newcomers.

Also, as much as I like most Star Trek, I wish it was more like the Culture. For a series of Sci-Fi shows I always find its use of tech and how it deals with the themes of a post-scarcity society odly conservative.

Also also, I'm pretty sure Elon Musk is a Culture contact agent. David Bowie was one as well.
