There is nothing natural about a fifteen minute intermission. Everybody starts talking about what they think of the movie so far, what they like and don't like while it's still got more than an hour left. It's like premiering a blockbuster on GAF.

Yeah I am going to say pretty safe estimate is around 3 hours but closer to 2.5 or 2.75 hours.

EDIT: Of course I'll take 3 hours if thats true!

only intermission i liked was when i seen "Kill Bill: the whole bloody affair" it felt very natural and didnt end like kill bill 1. felt like a true transition.

I wouldn't have Return of the King end any other way. Return of the King needed that half an hour of closure after 12 hours of no resolution. Shortchanging a bunch of character to try to stick to one characters' ending would have been shitty.

I don't see TDKR going over the IMAX limit. Maybe it'll have to have shorter credits in IMAX like Avatar did, but I think they're doing everything they can to get it under 166 minutes.

Not at all, you're just missing the entire point of that argument.

The switch to colour, widescreen and 3D etc are all motivated by a means of showcasing greater immersive qualities in the cinema.

Texting and intermissions contradict this motivation as they serve only to break that immersive quality and pull viewers out of the film's world.

How exactly do intermissions enhance your connection to a film? How does staring at a bright phone screen, rather than the movie screen make for a more visceral engagement with the screen you're now ignoring?

I don't believe this is 3+ hours long. I'd be down, and it would be awesome, but I think Nolan aims for a very specific sweet spot. Some people think his other movies are long enough as it is.
