The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered vs Original Graphics Comparison

Really wanted to keep this but I have to refund it within 2 hours cause it ran pretty bad on my PC. Not this game's fault, it's because my PC is old like over 8 years old all parts within it. It's a miracle my whole PC still works. I could play modded Skyrim very well and some recent AAA games like RE4 Remake but obviously Oblivion Remake/Remaster being much newer than Skyrim and also way bigger than RE4 remake is going to be much more demanding.

My original plan was to get a brand new PC once Elder Scrolls VI 100% or maybe when GTA VI comes cause those would be enough to motivate me. Which would still be at least over a year away. Oblivion Remaster came out of nowhere and it was amazing looking at the trailer and videos but sadly as much as I like it and want to keep it. It's not enough to get me to get a brand new PC since it's a extremely good remaster but still a remaster with the same game I already experienced a lot of times.

Not a total loss for me as Skybivion should be coming later this year which should definitely be less demanding. And I got the other single player modded ES or FO games to keep me entertained in gaming since I never seem to get bored of them forever. But I still have to give lots of credit for the Obivion Remake/Remaster.

I'm personally waiting for the TES IV: Oblivion Remake Is An Artistic Disaster video to tell me how to feel about this so I can tell everyone how I feel about it.

Massive fidelity upgrade but seems like they fumbled with the color grading/lighting mood almost fallout3 esque. I really hope they can add a classic filter like demons souls remake because this really looks much more depressing than oblivion in terms of colors instead of the fantastical look of the original.

I've been seeing negatives of performance issues in the steam reviews. It's personally ran flawlessly for me so far. Only complaint isn't even a perf or visual, but pathing sometimes is janky for NPCs. I have no connection to the original since i never played it, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the remaster and think it looks good.

Glad I held off.

Loved Oblivion for it's vibrant and green world, now it's just as bland-looking as Skyrim...

As for the rest, it's Oblivion.

Soul vs soulless.

Garbage UE5 vs besoke engine.

Yes, I hate this remaster and will keep shitting on it until you all get tired of me.
The Skyblivion mod is probably more your thing. Looks more cozy than this remaster.
But i get your point to some degree. It has great graphics fidelity but a little bit on the soulless side. The same goes for the Metal Gear Delta remake.

Have you thought about streaming it on GFN?

The talk about the "vibrancy" of the original is puzzling to me when most people would have played the original Oblivion either on early LCD monitors or early HD TVs. Both had absolutely dogshit contrast and that characteristic "grey veil" on the image.

I remember dropping almost an entire paycheck to buy an LCD projector for my 360. It was magical but even in complete darkness the image felt desaturated as hell.

I played for like 3 hours last night and loved it. I need to see more to see if it holds up when I get to towns etc but so far so good.

Great stealth drop

They changed the lighting and color of the world so much it feels more like Chernobyl instead of Cyrodiil. It's like you are in a different country. Cities and interiors look mostly good though, as do characters.

Reshade for people who want it to look greener

The old game was on Gamebryo, that engine along with its modified sibling "Creation Engine" have always been technically lackluster.
I'm sure there will be a reshade available soon which changes the color palette into more bloomy and white for those who prefer it.

Like most UE5 or UE in general remasters it looks soulless, but I have to say this one looks more like skyrim with a lot of mods slapped on to it haha

Now that looks a lot better. I am not sure why they changed the palette, but I hope they are open for a "legacy" filter.

I like the new palette, its gives it a more realistic look.
How does the overly warm reddish tint in the top picture look more realistic than the bottom one?

Was really excited when i seen the news this actually dropped. But the more i read about it the more i might hold off.
I loved the original but i dont want to just pick this up on nostalgia.

One thing that helps this feel more like Oblivion than Skyblivion will ever do is that UE5 supports SpeedTree, the procedural vegetation tech they had used for Oblivion and dropped for Skyrim for a homegrown solution (which just does not look right for the lush vegetation in Oblivion).

As of Unreal 5.1 SpeedTree supports Lumen And Nanite btw.

Various mods have tried to
Improve Skyrim trees and vegetation but some look better and some look worse than Vanilla Skyrim if you look closely: . Oblivion vegetation (tree, leaves, grass, etc…) looked very very good for its time.

And if it was the other way around, people would be complaining it's too vibrant and would be looking for a mod to tone it down. PC gamers.
Some people always will. Fans of Oblivion would not complain if the palette was closer to the original. Let's not make things up now :P.

Piss filter's back baby!

Joking aside, I think it mostly looks good. Unlike say RE4 and Demon's Souls, Oblivion already had generic fantasy/medieval aesthetics, so there was nothing to really ruin with redesigns and adding stuff. The lighting especially looks really good in the remaster.

The usual Unreal Engine slop

Kingdom Come II looks truer to the Oblivion aesthetic than this remaster

Everyone acting nostalgic for the original game's visuals, when it was always a pretty shitty looking game even when it came out. I remember having to mod extended LOD and various ENBs into it just to be content with how it looked.

Oblivion has been a meme game for two decades but the internet is about to retroactively lionize it as some artistic masterpiece like it does with everything else that gets remade. Youtube video essayists who haven´t even thought about this game since the Bush administration are currently putting together 5 hour long analysis videos filled with pretentious comments about how being alive in ´06 to witness the OG was like walking into a Van Gogh painting and using the wrong shade of green for blades of grass is a betrayal of Todd´s creative vision.

They lost the distinctive art style of the world—the lush greens and the unique rendering of vegetation. Now it doesn't feel like the same world in terms of perception. There's also a gloomy effect that has disappeared; it feels very Xbox 360-era, but it adds to the dreamy atmosphere.
So that's it for "we are very true to the original".

Looks amazing. Far better than the original, which shouldn't be hard since the game is almost 20 years old.

I was very impressed with the graphics of Obilivion in 2006. Before 2006 open world games had very simple scenery and fog to limit the draw distance and Obilivion changed that. The game looked like a 3Dmark to me. HDR lighting, excessive use of bump mapping, dynamic shadows and a huge open world. If you could see a building in the distance, you could travel to it. There were pop-in but that was understandable back in 2006.

BS. On console, Oblivion (XB 360) was a stunner and by far the biggest open world game console gamers ever experienced. It was a Mario 64 moment for me. The grand scale, all the complex rpg/dialogue systems, the quest, art style, picking up literally any item in the game, taking it with you across the map, dropping it off, and it still remaining there 40 hrs later etc...

The game was a demonstration of what games could be

Watched my son play it on his Xbox as I'll be getting a new PC in a few month's time, so I haven't bought the game yet,

I thought Oblivion remastered looked really good, a big improvement, I was impressed with it personally.

LOLNO. It was a launch window Xbox 360 game, literally competing with PS2 games. Game was a technical marvel at its original release.

The gameplay was always weak and janky AF though--completely carried by the novelty of the open world, interactivity, and systems.

Yeah he full of shit. I remember how flabbergasted me and my friend was when we saw the first game play reveal from the dungeon of the original Oblivion, I thought it as magic coming of Morrowind just 5 years earlier. Game was a real looker but my PC at the time couldn't even handled it. I spent the first 200 hours with draw distance at it's lowest looking like Silent Hill had invaded Cyrodiil.
