A couple of thoughts I had today.
Really enjoying the game so far, its one of the easier games I've played to just jump on, play a few quests, do some exploring and then jump off again. No pressure. I think the environment looks pretty damn good for an MMO and there seems to be a great population of players so far interacting, questing, dungeoning (though a proper group finder with auto travel to instance wouldn't go a miss!) and overall I'm pleased with the purchase.
But I'm also really struggling with the way the class system feels. I'm used to WoW and its clones (FFXIV) where you have a defined "holy trinity" and each class somehow fits into one of those three roles. I know its an often debated topic but I personally don't see any problem with that system. When you pick a class at the start of the game it gives you purpose. You know where your role lies in team play and what your strengths/weaknesses are from the start. You know if you pick a caster you'll wear light armour, do a f**k ton of DPS and probably throw bolts of lightning from your finger tips or staff. On the other hand you know that if you choose a warrior, you'll either DPS or tank, wear heavy armour, look like a badass and hit things to death.
But with ESO I feel it doesn't really matter what I pick. If I pick a sorcerer (which in my mind will be squishy but high damaging) I can whack on some heavy armour, a two hander, throw on some 2H'r skills and do a reasonable effort of doing melee damage just as the Dragonknight would have with the same gear and skills. Again same with the typically heavy hitters (DK/Templar), throw on a staff and some light armour and spec into Magicka and you've got yourself a mean caster.
Now I know some people will like this. It gives a great freedom to the gameplay and doesn't tie you down to any particular play style if you pick a certain class. Hell be a rogue type get your daggers out and stab stuff and then a minute later whip a resto staff out and be the healer for a group if you choose. Sounds good on paper. But its making the game feel a bit pointless and hollow for me, like I can't focus on an end game and strive towards it and that my character has no real purpose and that all the classes are kind of blending into one. I think it would have been a more approachable system if there wasnt any kind of classes at all. Like you just start off with a character and if you want to choose a particular direction of play you go for it, no need to define it from the start with a class type when it makes no real difference.
Am I the only one feeling like this or are people generally enjoying the class freedom?
