I think it's mostly down to what you're specifically looking for.
Would you like to tweak the combat mechanics?
Are you looking for more appealing visuals?
Is it important to you to stay lore friendly?
Whichever the case, I recommend you the following mods
. aMidianBorn Book of Silence - detailed, hi-res textures for most of the armor sets
. Enhanced Lights and FX - redesign and drammatically improve lightning
. UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul - better control and management of the followers
. Convenient Horses - better control and management of your horses
. WATER - new and enhanced textures, meshes, content for water, waterfalls, foam, rain
. Player Home Map Markers - small but helpful fix that adds player's houses to the map
Do also consider the Unofficial patches, they fixed various things in my playthrough and come handy
. Unofficial Skyrim Patch
. Unofficial Dawnguard Patch
. Unofficial Heartfire Patch
Some specific mods that could improve your game
. Skyrim Flora Overhaul - overhaul Skyrim's landscape with more varied flora
. Beans Badass Women - redesign most of the female followers
. Ethereal Elven Overhaul - revamp and drammatically improves the elven races
Check Skyrim GEMS yourself and see what could be interesting or useful to you.
You also might consider using an ENB to enhance the overall visuals of the game: it's usually a hit or miss, there're so many with different results.
If you can find one that suits your needs and is ok with your tastes, then you're golden. ENBs usually take 10-20 FPS depending on your setup/rig.

So ive been playing and i am loving it but i kinda want a one hit kill mod something that makes it a bit more realistic. I hate smashing a hammer 3-4 times on a fucking dog....i dont mind if the mod kills me in 1 hit too. Kinda want a farcry 3 with swords 
Is there anything like that? I have it on steam if that matters. I was also looking for a vats like system but someone already mentioned that a team is working on it so im hyped for that.

Use Lite SSAO... I get 40-50 fps ingame... but I belive the VRAM is the bottleneck since it can freeze lag from time to time.
Anyway to lower the VRAM usage in Skyrim? Set AA and AAF to 0.

Anyone know of mod/s that make the combat fun? I tried Duel back when it first came out and enjoyed it. Any quality alternatives?

Duel changed a lot from what i've read and i think its the best mod out there for changing melee combat pace, but Requiem or Skyrim Unleashed change it too

Duel is compatible with Skyrim Unleashed, but can be problematic with Requiem, although Requiem has rebalanced fighting system a lot.

Yes, thats requirement for using most popular and current mods, i've bought Dawnguard only for Requiem recently and i'm already prepared to buy Dragoborn as soon as mods gets updates for it

Is detailed faces, bodies, and XCE still the way to go or is there something better now?
Debating on using a mod to make the game better looking too but I dont know how far I want to push my hardware.

. Better males: NSFW, for the male body I use Better males Underwear - Default (veins removal + body hair textures 3, don't bother with the body builder shit)
. MacKoms Real Skin: new detailed hand-painted skin for male bodies
. Nuska Real Skin for Women: imperfect (as realistic and not doll like) skin for the female body
. Ethereal Elven Overhaul: valid revamp of the Mer races, especially the women but both genders greatly benefit from the mod
. The Eyes of Beauty: realistic irises, not always lore-friendly (many good choices for the women though)
. ApachiiSkyHair: expand your hairstyles (may cause CTD's when showracemenu'ing)
. Vanilla Hair Variety Plus: adds 2 female and 1 male hairstyles, blends extremely well with the vanilla ones
. Beards: hi-res, detailed beards - what else?
. Gizmodian Scars: hi-res scars that don't look like fresh cuts

I found a reddit thread with a bunch of reccomended mods. I installed a bunch and things were going great but Im occasionally hitting these moments where I enter a new area and my FPS is suddenly in the single digits and I dont know why. Exiting the game completely tends to fix it but Id like to fix it to the point where it doesnt happen at all. Ill work on disabling each mod one by one tomorrow to see which is causing it but figured Id post about it in the meantime and see if anyone had any insight.

That just might be a GPU stall or a harddrive issue. Is it on an SSD?
I have all those and many many many more and sometimes see my FPS drop a bit at times on loads. The thing to remember with Skyrim is the overall feeling of it. If you have a very occasional FPS drop you might just want to eat it. There are tons of people who can't even get it running
I am not saying first world problems or anything just that the engine is pretty piss poor anyway.
Lush Grass, Lush Trees and SMIM can hit you pretty hard.
For outdoors you can get good results by using just Skyrim Flora Overhaul and I don't find SMIM that essential, especially if you can't have a smooth experience.

This doesnt feel like a performance hit. Its weird. I can be in Whiterun one second with 60fps, zone into Dragonsreach, and come back out to 3-8 FPS. One time I walked into an inn and had 5 FPS, talked to tan NPC, and then it shot back up to 60.
I dug around some and saw that "Xenius Character Enchancement" has an extra blurb in its description stating that, in order to get it working with the official texture packs, you need to disable the official packs and then alter the Skyrim .ini. I tried that and just ran around for 10 minutes without issue. Not convinced yet but Ill work on it more tomorrow.
No idea if something like that could cause a massive framerate dip like I had.
Not at my PC right now but Ill check tomorrow.

i5 750 @ 3.4
Nvidia gtx 660ti
8GBs DDR3 RAM
Are you sure it's ENB? Try testing without ENB, then without mods. Try reinstalling ENB 0.119 to the main skyrim folder without using a mod manager (I never use mod managers for ENBs; directly extract to and replace the files in the main skyrim folder).

Maybe he's running D3Doverrider, or his graphics card software that don't play well with D3D9 or whatever of enb. I remember having those problems with Fallout 3/nv and skyrim and always smack my forehead when I realize that D3Doverrider or nvidia afterburner graphics monitor thing was running.
Yeah don't use mod managers for ENBs since they go right in your main folder, with unique instructions usually. Mod manager installs are usually basic drop in data folder files. Some have a good deal of customizing via a menu but it still goes in data after you pick.

I was messing around with making a mage this time (destruction magic), and the mods that make destruction magic a bit better to use. Beams are pretty much the only way I can play it. The projectiles move so slow usually, I have to be Hawkeye to predict which way enemies may go.

I'd rather not recommend you one or another, there're different valid ones and it's mostly based on your tastes, needs and setup.
You can check hodilton channel, look for Skyrim ENB Presets, to see many of them in action.

Way less practical but I prefer it when the character takes up more of the screen. Made the camera position between sheath/unsheathed the same too since I never liked the swinging back and forth

I am having various issues with the CBBE and DIMONIZED UNP body mods though I have absolutely no idea if it is causing my game to constantly crash to desktop every 5 minutes.
I do have various other mods installed from the workshop but they are mainly environmental and they worked next to no problems before i tried out the two above. Bearing in mind the body mods were downloaded from nexus.
Any help to make one of these mods workable in my game?
My rig is:

AMD Athlon X2 3.0GHz
Ram 4gb
Geforce 9800 GTX

The way they said to install it was put them in the skyrim/data/textures/.../female folder and not in my documents.
Ill check later on tonight as I am not at my home computer
Oh yeah D3Doverrider or Afterburner will fuck things up too. Forgot about those.
I did not know this. I was having issues with ENB as well so, if I ever go back to it, Ill try disabling those.
Weird thing is that I initially got that an ENB working until I tried summoning that Imaginator thing. Dude would appear and just leave and I wasnt able to interact with him at all or change any settings. Thats when I rebooted and it started crashing right away.
I also went with a new texture pack and now my load times have tripled. I might be ditching it but I want to run that texture optimizer tool first.

Looks good, I want, but you said you tweaked it yourself right? I have been meaning to look up a mod that make the transition from 3rd to fight stance the same.
Framerate is very, very bad.

I just bought the game for the first time and I'd like some suggestions to visual mods. I'm already downloading the official HD texture pack but if you guys had any other suggestions, I'd appreciate. I never modded any Bethesda game, so I'm new to ENB and these sort of thing. I know the OP has many suggestions, but maybe it's not so updated? 'm looking for better visuals. Don't know about the HUD, but if there is something for that too (even though I haven't tested), thanks!
Yes, under General.
Texture packs and ENB are the biggest ones. What's your machine like? If you have a good machine, there are better texture packs than the official Bethesda ones.
ACE, Duel or Deadly Combat, Dance of Death for finishing moves.
Try this.
Can always disable it if it hurts performance too much.

Not sure what the default values would be, otherwise as long as the xyz values are the same between shoulder/shouldercombat, the camera shouldn't move

You don't have to but I think you would want to.
It's not necessary, just a little easier/quicker. Do you know how to install it manually? If not, it describes how to do it in the Installation section of the mod page.
