The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I've had this happen once in awhile. In about 7 hours of play, it's happened twice. Doesn't happen with any other games. I don't OC.

I also get a crash to desktop where I get a message saying the graphics driver shat itself. Doing a google search has both of these problems looking increasingly common.

Okay so it is a game issue? That's good to hear (well in perspective I suppose).

has anyone made a overencumbered mod yet?

You can just use the console to change your carrying capacity.

As for the console locking out achievements - again, I have used the console repeatedly to change fOV and to outright cheat (give myself gold, change my perks, etc.) and I'm still getting achievements.

Is everyone's shadows blocky/pointy like this on High and Ultra?

Not only are they blocky but they seem to "dance" like a Squigglevision cartoon (Home Movies, Dr. Katz).

It's distracting. I would rather turn them off than have them look this terrible, but I can't figure out if that's even possible.[/QUOTE]
I have this and the dancing issue as well (GTX 570 playing on Ultra with latest beta drivers).

This is NOT true. I keep changing the FOV whenever the game decides to change it back and sure enough achievements are still popping up.

So... i kinda fucked up with the ugrid settings...

Now my game crash every time i load up the latest save file. D:

I've tried using the backed up Skyrim exe but that didn't help at all.
Any suggestions? I'd rather not restart the game. :/

You should have saved 'saves', not exe.
The Octagon like 5-6 pages ago wrote a little tutorial for recovery, but dont know if this will work for You.

Not too bad, you should see if a save game manager can maybe help. Not sure as I haven't read a lot on the issue as most as playing it safe so far.

It doesn't stop me from getting achievements either.

nope my shadows are perfect on ultra.

And already people are asking for cheat mods for the games? .. kids these days *grumble*

This is what happens when a game looks bad...

Bethesda should have made a prettier game so i didn't have to tweak everything... :P

The bit about the media being denied PC code rings a few bells. In my experience, every request to review a Bethesda game on PC has been met with: 'It's a Steam game and therefore won't be available until launch day in the US.' Brink, Rage, Skyrim... same every time.

That part of his post is nonsense, we (the press) were given code one week before launch, and adjusting the FOV in-game doesn't disable achievements. Sounds like he read a load of stuff online, failed to confirm or test any of it, and then knocked up a headline-grabbing story to help his career.

It looks great in some shots and then good in others. Better than Oblivion from what I've seen but still sloppy in terms of PC issues.

At least you get to a desktop. My symptoms:
It really seems to happen if im in the outdoors for about 5-10 minutes now.
If im in a dungeon or in a house, its fine, as soon as i get out, the game goes black, i can hear all the music, but I have to hard reset the pc.
win7 x64
i5 3.0ghz
ATI HD 6800

Steps to try and fix
updated BIOS
ATI catalyst is already at the latest
Changed sound device to 24 bit 44100HZ
Did a verify integrity of game cache
Disabled community chat for Skyrim

Really bummed. The weird thing is I played for hours with no issue at all. Now I can't play for more than 5-10 min even using different saves.

It seems like my fov resets every once in a while. Despite setting it in both the ini and console. Is there a permanent solution to fix this?

2500k stock
560ti
8 GB RAM
Win 7 64
1080p

everything ultra, 2x AA, 8x AF, did the ini tweaks in op

getting 60 fps everywhere.

now i am ready to rock and roll. my advice is dont waste too much time trying to tweak every single thing and you will enjoy the game a lot better. the opening of the game looks like ass, but damn it gets pretty once you hit riverwood.

Make the ini read only. I know it's BS but give it a try. Just make sure your settings are set so incase you change them, it may have a seizure.

You guys have probably already talked about this but I get a huge performance boost and very little loss in visual quality if I turn off AA completely and just use FXAA.

FOV doesn't seem to change even though it's set in the ini in both My Docs and the Skyrim folder, not sure why Bethasda makes it a pain to set.

That does sound like bologna but I will give it a shot.

"fov XX" works really well. And I notice it carries over between play sessions. Usually.

Make sure you change it back to your preferred fov ingame before committing to make the file read only :P

The INI file doen't affect your FOV at all. Not even a a little. Only the console command works and I've noticed that the FOV setting occasionally clears itself and has to be reset.

Even if you don't save and reload?
Using a console command doesn't affect achievements in any way. Even if you save, load, whatever.

Still no fix for the ugrid crashes? I've tried changing the ugrid value but it's not working at all with any saves. D:

I'm not entirely sure what causes that as I haven't read a sure fix yet. Definitely open to some suggestions that do work and are proven to work so I can add them in the OP.

I honestly don't believe anyone has got the FOV to work using the INI. Prove me wrong GAF!

For god's sake, no one has gotten the INI file to change the FOV because it doesn't work. Test it yourself: Try setting it to something like 10 since that would make the change incredibly obvious. Then do the same using the console command and watch it go!

The only reason that people are suggesting the INI tweak is because it worked with previous Bethesda games.

It's either broke or just stupid but most of the working fov's are coming right from the console. Needs to be fixed.

And the command line is there for this game too :P

But broken, it seems.

Yes, I know, I'm trying to tell that to LiquidMetal, as he keeps suggesting it to everyone.

Is there a list of which console commands disable achievements? I found one that increases walking speed, which Ive been trying to figure out how to do, but I don't want to mess with anything like that if it ruins things.

Oh just saw this, is this true?
