The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Apparently Darn is working on one. The UI is so horrible in this game

Ah cool burgers. And yeah, I really hate the UI. Hopefully Darn makes it awesome.

PC using 360 controller - The biggest thing that's annoying me is the fact that there doesn't appear to be a weapon quick-swap. The favourites menu is nice and everything, but why can't there also be a 'last weapon loadout' switch? Playing as a duel axe wielding battlemage, this would improve the gameplay so much.

Is there a quick fix for the turn stuttering issue yet? I'm getting good fps on my 5770 and 1090T, 40+ fps but turning is really jarring. Will making the exe large address aware solve the issue?

So how do I use my controller for this game? I've never used my controller on the PC before, so I have no idea. Do I need to install drivers or something?

So is anyone able to have an FOV that sticks? It's so strange that it remembers the console setting between saves, and yet randomly resets itself during the game. I've never been able to pinpoint exactly when it resets, as it usually takes me a minute or so to realise that it looks crap again, and I have to type in the command for the millionth time. I think it must be when you exit certain interiors or towns?

It's the most irritating problem I have with the game, and I hope it is addressed in the next patch.

for battlemages, this would be awesome.

When you plug the controller in drivers should download automatically. Using the controller in the game is as simple as plugging it in. All the menus / button prompts should change to the controller mapping as well.

The FOV fix in the OP seems to be working for me.

Go to your favorites menu (UP)and hold left or right on the item/spell you want to hotkey.

Might be stating the obvious here, but aside from what vitaminwateryum said, close the game first, hook up the gamepad then re-open the game.

I haven't had any luck. :-/

So they just downright lied about the required specs (not that it would be a first but still)? According to that systemrequirement tool I (we) should "have a great experience running this product" :(
I think we have the same problem considering we have similar laptops... maybe the pc doesn't recognise Skyrim as a game and runs it with Integrated Graphics (power saving mode).
The game should run well on our machines!

someone else on the same page found that that was the case.. go into device manager and check... he had to switch his..

I came here to ask about a Macbook Pro 2011 with the 6750M 1GB Vram and 4 gigs of ram.

On my laptop with a 6770M it works well at 13something x 7something with high settings. At the native 1600x900 the fps was below 30 - and before you ask, going to low settings didnt change much.

Anyways the game is much prettier at low rez with high settings than at high rez witih low settings.

Can somebody tell me what the best settings that would provide my system with a balance of performance and visuals. I'm running it on low right now in windowed mode. I'm sure if I apply the right settings I could up the settings.

Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7272 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop
Processor Intel Core i7-2630QM processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5
6GB DDR3 1333MHz (max 8GB)
display at 1600 x 900 native resolution

As is standard with Bethesda games, I'm glad I didn't getting this on release and will be getting it at Christmas instead.

Needs a lot of patches, as usual.

I almost caved a few times, but I held my ground thus far and I'm waiting like you. Hopefully I'll be able to get it on sale somewhere by then as well, and by then the community should have mostly fixed the game (bugs, UI, inventory issues, character models). Bethesda really, really, needs to get a better QA team or maybe programmers/devs already. I was fine back in the day with these issues, as most were, but in this day and age there's no free pass on issues like these.

With everything on Ultra, 8x AA and 16x AF I'm getting a 25-35 fps with the following system:

i5 2500k stock at 3.3 ghz
8 GB ram
ATI 6970 2 gig
1920 x 1080

My performance seems a bit low for my specs. With AA at x4 my fps is 30-40.

What do you guys think? Is this performance normal?

Seems low.

Hmm, so I'm having an issue with intermittent drops in frame-rate. Every 30 seconds to 2 minutes it will drop by more than half, sometimes even lower to 10-15 FPS. The low framerate lasts for 2-4 seconds.

Here's my hardware (it's a laptop):

- i7-2630QM 2.00GHz
- 12GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560m
- Running the game at 1680x1050

I have the game set to medium-high settings with AA turned off and can normally manage 40-60 FPS depending on the situation, but this random framerate drop is really distracting :/

Since I'm right in the middle of a software quality assurance class...

1. You can't blame QA
- You HONESTLY think QA doesn't find these bugs? Of course they do. The devs probably have a ton of them to fix, but they probably get so much to fix that they only fix the important ones. Now imagining a game of this size and scope, very likely you fix one bug and another one pops up.

2. You can't blame the programmers
- There is NO SUCH THING as a bug free program. They're likely doing all they can to fix the bugs that come their way, BUT they have a deadline to meet to release this damn game. I'm sure there have been a lot more serious bugs that they fixed that we don't know about.

3. You can't blame the Project Manager
- He has business analysts and god knows who else breathing down this neck trying to get this product out asap, yet he is also supposed to keep costs down. So what is he left with? Release far into the future after bug fixes or release soon and issue patches?

Now, this isn't to say their approach isn't super sloppy (it likely is), but my point is that it's likely their whole process that needs improvement and it's not one team responsible for the bugs.

The Elder Scrolls games have the best modding community of all games.

Man i need my higher res textures and not sure if possible improved models too.
Hope they can also inject other shaders into this game.

is it normal to get dips into the 40s when approaching Riverwood? I am on a i7 950 @ 3.8ghz with dual GTX 580s, all settings ultra 8xAA. 60 everywhere, but when I look at some places it goes to the 50s. But in certain parts looking towards Riverwood I see drops to the 40s.

Yes, especially with uGrid tweak.

Is everyone's shadows blocky/pointy like this on High and Ultra?

Not only are they blocky but they seem to "dance" like a Squigglevision cartoon (Home Movies, Dr. Katz).

It's distracting. I would rather turn them off than have them look this terrible, but I can't figure out if that's even possible.

I didn't use that tweak but I have used every other .ini tweak listed. It's mainly when I look at certain directions in Riverwood (tested again in other areas), like looking towards where a lot of things are. Kind of disappointing considering my beefy machine.

Yes i think they fucked up their cascaded shadowmap code.

Any word on efforts to fix the horrendously low quality shadows?

There is a tweak that softens them but I want higher resolution shadows that aren't too soft.

Not sure on that, try also making TESV.exe large address aware. The game runs so much smoother with both of those for me personally...though I was annoyed I had to go back and redo my Skyrim.ini settings again.

This seems complicated. Does it really make that much of a difference?

Well shit just had my first big glitch. Was outside hunting deer when all of a sudden my video went out to my monitor. I checked my video card and the fans were still spinning (does that rule out hardware failure?) I was OC'ing my 6850 but within CCC's range. Hope it was the game that caused it. Or could the card have overheated and shut itself off?
