The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Strange, suddenly (2 times in the last hour) my pc just switches to the desktop and the game's gone. Is this a common problem, or is there a known fix for that? No error message, nothing.
Try playing it in window mode. In the mod section of the 2nd post, there is a mod to try if you want. It sucks but there is still some patching and driver issues that need to be sorted.

That's a negative.

Harsh.
So you try going back to the default by chance?

As is standard with Bethesda games, I'm glad I didn't getting this on release and will be getting it at Christmas instead.

Needs a lot of patches, as usual.

In terms of Skyrim glitches, this is the best one:

I've read tons but crashing is not a common thing like I would expect. I've read it on the beth forums but that's the official board so one would expect that to be the epicenter or issues being reported.

Haven't read much on GAF and other forums.

What does the FPS fix do specifically? Is it for framerate hitching like I'm experiencing?
I haven't tested it first hand but it says it lets you cap the FR to whatever you want it to be. I know we have dxtory that does that but not sure if it's just for 1 specific value or you can edit it like this mod.

Is there a console command to show fps?
ToggleDebugText (tdt) - show FPS and other debug information; enter it again to turn it off

I am editing more in the OP in a minute.

Let me look into this more as it looks like it might not work. You can try it but I can't find that other than in 1 source so if I were you, I would use fraps.

If it works the same as the FO3/NV you'll see a slight framerate increase and the hitching will be gone.

Thanks. Did I install it incorrectly? I Dropped the mod into the Skyrim folder, but I'm still getting hitching while turning, but it's not registering as there being any drop in FPS. Any help is appreciated!

With everything on Ultra, 8x AA and 16x AF I'm getting a 25-35 fps with the following system:

i5 2500k stock at 3.3 ghz
8 GB ram
ATI 6970 2 gig
1920 x 1080

My performance seems a bit low for my specs. With AA at x4 my fps is 30-40.

What do you guys think? Is this performance normal?

Damn after using that OGSSAA guide my game looks beautiful but my fps averages 25 :( with frequent drops to 20

i5 @ 4.5
GTX 570

For those also using this what kind of computer do you have? Also does OGSSAA prevent programs like DXTORY from taking screenshots? It's not taking them I have to use prntscr. Do I just need to add another custom resolution if I want to drop it down to 1.25 or 1.5x?

I have a similar system: i5 750, GTX 570. I have it running with 1.5x1.5 OGSSAA, indoors pretty solid 50fps (max with that resolution) outdoors I get around 40fps with dips down to 30 when it's loading in new textures or whatever. You just have to add another resolution, I had to try quit a few refresh rates till I found the right one.

Lower shadows and use SSAA in drivers instead of MSAA.

I have i5 2500k [stock], GTX 560 and on 1.5x1.5 OGSSAA so 1920x1536 4x MSAA@1280x1024, ugrid=7 and shadows on low [high isnt worth 20-30 fps hit and medium looks the same] i have mostly 60+ outside [when i'm looking at riverwood from the distance it was 40] and 90+ inside.
And 1.5x1.5 allows me to use FRAPS [but it stall sometimes and dont want to make screens anymore, dont know why], i had the same issue with 2x2 OGSSAA that fraps automatically turn off my game, but Playclaw after Large Address Aware TESV.exe worked [fraps not], but it gives me stuttering sometimes.
So in the end i choose lower res + fraps and i'm happy with that.

Actually drop that just use MSAA instead of AA

Is it possible that on my laptop this game is running on Integrated Graphics instead of the correct gpu?
THAT's the problem I was having. Jeez I can't believe it.

I just opened the Nvidia Control Panel and basically set everything to dedicated video card and bam! now the game selects high setting as default (it was medium before) and it's basically locked at 40 fps. YEAH.

What value did you use?

Well, I was just wondering if that perfomance seems normal. Just so I know that my system is working fine.

Also: I've never played with my 360 controller on my PC, but I think that, with this game, it will be a first. How do you do this? Just plug my controller in my USB Port and that's it?

Alight since changing the FOV in the ini file did nothing I just used the command console method. Then I leave a town and the fov resets.

WTF...

Not sure on that, try also making TESV.exe large address aware. The game runs so much smoother with both of those for me personally...though I was annoyed I had to go back and redo my Skyrim.ini settings again.

From what I've seen, the UI has a very slick aesthetic. It's obviously optimised for controllers instead of kb/m, though.

Also while watching the Giantbomb QL, I noticed that there didn't seem to be a way to sort items in the inventory? Which just seems like a huge pain in the ass/oversight.

items are sorted automatically and there are a lot of categories, so you won't be lost.

What kind of performance should I be getting with this at 1920x1200 with medium settings?Anybody have a similar rig?

You have a better rig than mine so you should be fine with settings on high.

Dual Core 3.0ghz
4gb ram
ATI HD4850 512mb
W7 64
1680x1050
No AA

Auto detected high so I left it there. Game looks great, averaging mid 30's outside (I'm guessing, not sure). Not tweaked anything yet, save for disabling mouse smoothing, so I'm sure I could eek out a few more fps but right now I'm pretty happy with the performance, very playable.

Automatically sorted by name, yes. You should be able to sort them by other properties as well, imo. Weight, damage, defence, type etc.

Also, the favourites seemed all over the place and not sorted by anything, not even alphabetically. But maybe he just added too many (he had like 30 things favourited or something). Brad. >_<

But yeah, just my outside observations without having played the game yet.

Does ENB break achievements? Also, my games has started crashing A LOT lately, even though I have applied the audio fix. I played for 8 hours yesterday without crashes but today I'm crashing every few minutes.

This game is ugly, runs like ass, stutters constantly and has already locked up on me in less than an hour of starting the game.

Yeah.

Apparently Darn is working on one. The UI is so horrible in this game

On the UI: its constructed differently to what we've got used to with previous Bethesda games. Its built using Scaleform which is going to slow modders down a little as we get to grips with it. Hopefully its going to be flexible enough to produce good results, we'll see.

I had the random CTD today for the first time. I hope they'll release a patch soon, this is kind of ridiculous for a high budget game.

As long as we get something that doesn't make you rage become you're not using a shitty gamepad, it's all good. Keyboard isn't even recognized properly!

No, noo, no and may very well be. So in conclusion: Stop talking crap.

Yes. Now the only way I seem to be able to 'stick' the FOV is load up, open up a menu to make it default, console change the FOV back to my preference, save and exit to main menu, then hit continue - and this is all only temporary, if I exit the game I have to do this all over again, for example. It absolutely will not stay any other way now though, despite working just fine before. Again, I haven't tweaked any other settings either. I suppose at least it's something, but man. How bizarre.

I'm wondering if merely making progress somehow made it wig out. At least, I saved and quit a number of times yesterday when I was low level without my FOV ever defaulting upon opening a menu.

the game is gorgeous, the beginning doesn't show it off though. You have to get out of the first cave to really notice how great it is for this type of game.

Anyone here running on a 2010 Macbook Pro in bootcamp? I was originally going to get it for Xbox, but I hear that it's actually pretty well optimized for lower end PCs, so I just want to know how the performance is...

assuming you have the mbp 2010 with the 330 GT, you can run at 1440x900 at all medium settings (textures/decals at high). the frame rate will be a playable ~25ish fps (30-60 indoors, drops to 20 in specific scenes). the 2011 mbp (with the 6750M) should use similar settings (you can dial up draw distances, too), but will see higher frame rates. the game is heavily cpu-driven, and both of those machines pack strong mobile cpus.

Anybody have an echo sound constantly? Doing my head in. I changed to 24 bit, 44100Hz but it still sounds odd. Like a muffled echo to everything.

I feel despite setting the shadow detail to Ultra, and using the "5" setting in the .ini for shadow detail; my shadows are still extremely jaggy. Any ideas?

Yeah.
Should've gone with the PC version, in which case #2 and #3 are your hardware's fault.

But I won't argue Bethesda technical or QC prowess - that's a losing battle. :p

Running on medium/ high on MBP 2011 with little problems in third person. First person is another story. Is first person that more intensive?

It's exactly the same but third person appears more smooth since you're not panning around as much.

god damn flickering, it starts after 10-15mins of playing, not a performance issue, im stumped

I had some texture flickering when I was using Adaptive AA in the AMD control panel. Switching to MSAA eliminated it completely.

For anyone with AMD/ATI cards, with 8X MSAA using the Edge-detect filter in the control panel, I'm able to run everything maxed at 8XAA and 16XAF on Ultra with Shadows on High and get about 60-80+ FPS nearly everywhere I go. Leaving Shadows on Ultra resulted in 60FPS with drops in the 50s. It seems to have a huge impact on performance. With Shadows on high, the game still looks beautiful and I'm pretty pleased with the performance now.

You have the exact same problem and 'solution' that I have. Haven't found a fix :(
