The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

This fucking games refuses to run. Everything's fine at the Bethesda logo, then the dragon pops up, but the game closes instantly, the moment the menu begins to appear.

No crash message or anything, just poof, like I hit Alt+F4.
Its an audio issue. Had to set my audio from 192khz to 44.1khz I believe

btw, had I known how bad the default keyboard controls were I might have jumped straight for the 360 version. That being said I wonder how the 360 version (once they fix the texture bug) shapes up graphically vs the PC version. I hooked up my laptop to a TV and ran the game on 720p@2xAA with everything else on the highest possible setting and the game was so damn gorgeous. If you told me it was a next gen console game, I would have believed it.

Dunno if this is old or not, but I think I found a way to set the FOV properly, since it doesn't seem to work with the .ini.
Right-click Skyrim in Steam > Properties > Set Launch Options and add -fov xx (xx being whatever you fancy).

Did nothing for me.

guys, how do i ensure that it is running in 5.1 sound? it seems to be running in stereo...

are you on an nvidia card, and did you fiddle with the settings on it for it?

I just had the weirdest performance gain. I'm using RadeonPro, no different ini tweaks.

In RadeonPro, left AA control to the app, set the AA filter to multisampling (box), adaptive AA under AA mode, and in the advanced tab I set texture filtering and mipmaps to HQ. Everything runs smoother, no jitters anymore and it's almost constantly 60fps. Pics....

Was getting sporadic drops, no more. Was losing FPS when looking out into the open on the left, not now. 60 fps smooth, I mean got smooth before but not butter smooth like things are now.
tesv2011-11-1400-59-4cu7l6.png

Same settings before yielded me in the upper 40's here, now smooth 60 with small dip into the upper 50's
tesv2011-11-1401-02-0mt7cl.png

This area dropped into the low 40's, now it's in the mid 50's.

The main thing is that I'm not getting odd frame rate hitches anymore AND I'm running better and transparent AA!

Try with Radeon pro AA set to enhance application settings just for kicks.

Shot in the dark here, are you running xFire? I had that same issue until I turned it off. Are you running any mods too?

Hype is getting to me and I'm considering picking it up, what kind of performance can I expect with this hardware?

off to bed

For some reason, my Khajiit's head is see through at certain angles. During character creation his whole head was transparent, and when I get to the part where you can pull the camera back, when I have it looking at certain angles you can see right through him. I reset everything to default and reset the .ini's and nothing helped. I don't know what is going on!

It's due to having multisampling AA forced on in your graphics card. The trolls are transparent too I bet. Turning MS off fixed it for me.

Ok, Liquidmetal14 and I have seemingly stumbled upon some 'magic' FPS boost using RadeonPro, as you can see above.

I NEED MORE AMD USERS FOR TESTING TO SEE IF THESE TWEAKS WILL WORK FOR EVERY AMD USER

If you have a Radeon 5770, 6770, 5850, 5870, 6850, 6870, 6950, 6970, etc, I need you to contact me on Steam so I can walk you through tweaking and measuring your performance to see if we can get these tweaks to work for everyone.

PM me, contact me on Steam (id: disgustipated) or leave a reply in this thread. Thanks!

I was getting those annoying dips in fps, 60fps to 30ish to 45 to 60. I added iPresentInterval=0 to my skyrim.ini, started playing and the fps was going crazy, game was stuttering and slowing down to 15 or so fps.
So i deleted the ini tweak and now it's running at a constant 60fps outside of town in caves , houses. When i enter a town though it starts out at 30 fps and slowly goes up to 60fps then stays.

1100T @4ghz - 2 cores disabled
2x gtx580 1.5g (stock)

ohhh..I've been fighting frost trolls, thought they were supposed to be transparent lol.

I've done the same thing. for two days now.... Using radeon pro... alternate frame rendering... Oblivion profile... app settings for AA... but turned app settings down and forced Adaptive MSAA through CCC instead to get rid of re-appearing textures (fixed it for me a while back).... Looks great, and crossfire is running

Any comments?

Game is running fine here since I installed those Nvidia beta drivers, before that I had a few dips here and there but that`s all gone now. Looks and plays great...

i7 920@ 4.2ghz HT enabled
6GB RAM
1x GTX580 @ 846/2004
1920x1200 @ 60FPS locked
Win7 Ultimate x64

8x AA
16x AF
High settings with Shadows on medium, Reflect Sky enabled and Decal Quantity on Ultra.
No tinkering with .ini files

One crash so far in 10 hours. Looks like your typical PC gaming mess, game runs fine on certain PCs, acts like a complete ass on others with the same hardware.

Anyway, installing the latest nvidia betas removed all of my problems.

360M GTS is an 8800GT derivative, I used to have one in an older laptop. Is that a laptop?

Should play on Low-Medium.

Yah its a laptop, though I don't think you're correct on it being an 8800GT derivative, the 8800GT is a 512 card and the 360M is a 1GB card

...And yup, quick googling says the 360M is a 9800 GT Derivative

I don't get it. I get full 60 fps in the open world but as soon as I go in an interior, my fps drops to 10-20.

It's definitely not my hardware. Is there any fix for this on Nvidia cards?

For fuck's sake. :( I realised I hadn't saved in about 20 minutes, so I pressed F5 only for the game to exit.

Im having the same issue all of a sudden. im level 18 and from level 1-16 i didnt have 1 bit of lag. now suddenly when im inside caves or keeps it drops down to 5-10 frames per second really really bad. and my pc is capable of 60+ on ultra. i downloaded the beta drivers for nvidia which made the game run even smoother but it didnt fix this problem :/ sigh

Anyone else experienced this freeze/crash? It's for the magic college quest - you're in the ruins supposed to collect artifacts. I collected an amulet, causing traps to appear. You are then supposed to shoot a wall. I fired, but then the game froze.

Tried some of the basic stuff with RadeonPro listed on the previous page and didn't notice any significant difference in frame rate. Not that I did very scientific tests or anything, just messed around with it.

Just tried this on a 6950 2GB and there is definitely an increase in frames with a decrease in stuttering using RadeonPro and Liquid's recommended config.

Game runs much smoother! PM me with any other suggestions on tweaking/testing, more than willing to help.

Big thanks to Liquid for finding this out.

I will contact you tomorrow mate, as I'm going to bed soon. I have a 6970m (overclocked to about a 6850 range) and looking forward to seeing if I can squeeze some more juice out of it.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but people should try this mod along with the settings someone tweaked that are in the comments thread.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131

Makes the colors pop and adds a bit of other subtle things that really enhance the look of the game. You can also easily turn it off and on in-game with the pause button.

Yay downloaded this and now my game is completely broken.

I love you so much right now

edit: oh for the love of god I fucking uninstalled everything that came with that mod and my game still won't open. Running as administrator and everything. Unbelievable.

Same here. Trolls are transparent as well. Any ideas what might be causing it?

Are you forcing MSAA via drivers?

Is it worth trying this on a 4xxx range card? Got a 4890 1GB.

Also, need help.

I always play a game in windowed mode since I multitask. How do I lock the mouse within Skyrim? Since occasionally my PC will think that my mouse is at the taskbar even though I'm playing the game.
