The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

3) Some people have scarified detail draw distance for sharper shadows, others seem to be using AMD (I certainly can't replicate LM's AMD shadows using his settings on NV hardware), others are using changes that make the game unstable/not suited to general hardware.

Yeah, but I still don't understand why some people here are using settings for their .INI that make their shadows look great, and even if I copy and paste those settings into my .ini, I get the same shadows. No matter what. No cons like performance stability or draw distance, I just get no change in shadow quality.

I'm having the same problem. I attempted to imitate the shadow improvements but noticed no changes ingame at all.

I don't feel like there is any reason to mod the game right now. I'll wait until I'm bored of the packaged experience.

The better mods won't come out until after the construction set is released anyway. It's pretty amazing everything we've seen though, under a week from release with no official tools.

The jist of it is the same as the past few major PC releases.

1.Throw ATi card into fireplace.
2.Buy Nvidia card.

There's no specific game-breaking (or significant) problems related to AMD cards that I'm aware of, so let's not bring this here.

If you aren't seeing any difference with different shadow settings are you sure you're changing the correct files in the correct place? At least stuff like fShadowDistance and iShadowMapResolution should be pretty obvious.

What is the settings that Dennis is using for his uber shadows?

Can anyone post the full shadow setting list that has some detail but not extreme close range please? Shadow is the only thing left to fix. Also using 8192 shadow res killed my PC indoors. :P

The FXAA Post Process injector is working wonders to my liking. The colours are so much better and more saturated.

Ok, Liquidmetal14 and I have seemingly stumbled upon some 'magic' FPS boost using RadeonPro, as you can see above.

I NEED MORE AMD USERS FOR TESTING TO SEE IF THESE TWEAKS WILL WORK FOR EVERY AMD USER

If you have a Radeon 5770, 6770, 5850, 5870, 6850, 6870, 6950, 6970, etc, I need you to contact me on Steam so I can walk you through tweaking and measuring your performance to see if we can get these tweaks to work for everyone.

PM me, contact me on Steam (id: disgustipated) or leave a reply in this thread. Thanks!

Quoting myself again. I added a lot of people on Steam, but I'd like even more people to try this out. Once I confirm it works, Liquid or I will post the extra settings.

I have a 5770 and AMD cpu. Still looking for help?

8192 shadow res

2000-4000 for distance but I am going to be using 6000 instead. I can't stand to see the shadows appearing as I move around. So thats going to sacrifice some sharpness.

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1,2 or 3 as a matter of preference. I suggest you try all three values to see what look you prefer.

I might be able to help out tonight. If Im going to need to download anything additional to test with, let me know. I can grab it now and Dropbox it so its there when I get home. I already use RadeonPro and already run the game using the Oblivion AA profile, if that means anything to your testing.

AMD 6870, btw.

Does increasing shadow resolution help with the terrible shadows from the firepit in your Whiterun home? I've tried lots of different settings but nothing seems to affect it.

How is this game for crossfire.

Was thinking about putting in another HD 6770

There is no crossfirex support yet, but I've heard that AMD is working on an update and profile for this game.

RadeonPro is what you'll need, that's all. And some knowledge of using RadeonPro/tweaking shit.

So, I've managed to get past that 48k audio problem, and had the game running fine. Now, whenever I open steam(?), or Skyrim, my computer freezes like an NES cartridge, and I'm forced to restart my computer. Why?

6000 is all blurry and shit. o.O

Strange. Was there a patch yesterday/today or something? Game was running fine for me on Saturday when I last played; today it is super choppy. I haven't changed/done anything since I last played.

wat

SLI scales fantastically for me.

One GPU: 34 fps

Two GPUs: 61 fps

This is outside in the wilderness.

Well what can I say, I'm the black sheep of pc-gaming :

one gpu : 60 fps without ugrids or staring at no-no spots
two gpus: 55-60 fps at the same spot. So in other words less.

So I caved and got it, couldn't wait.

Laptop specs are:

Intel Core i5 Mobile 430 @ 2.27ghz
4gb Memory
Radeon HD Mobility 5400 Series (I don't know which one specifically)

Was worried the GPU wouldn't hold up, but the game auto set me to High, left it as it was for the whole intro and was blown away. Turned it down to medium without AA and such to make it smoother but I will have no problem playing the whole game this way.

For those who play at high resolutions and lots of MSAA:

At 2560 x 1600 with 8xMSAA, I am frequently using about 1.7GB of VRAM so that may explain some of the sudden drops in fps for people with 1.5GB VRAM.

So far, tested on 3 different AMD GPU equipped configurations, the RadeonPro tweaks have had a positive benefit. Still need a couple more people to test for me, after that I'll release a quick guide to enabling the tweaks.

Keep in mind that if you open up the Options menu from the launcher iBlurDeferredShadowMask gets reset back to 3 (if you are using Ultra), at least for me it does.

Would that be suitable for (don't laugh) 1440X900?
Certainly. 85 seems like a comfortable FOV for any resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Some people like to go wider, but it starts to look distorted to me. Depends how close you are to the screen, too. The closer to you sit, the more 'peripheral' view will feel comfortable.

What FOV are you guys playing at?
I'm playing at FOV = 75; 1680 x 1050 on a 19" monitor. It's what feels "right" to me.

Default is 65.
Wow, it felt like 50. Seriously, I couldn't see more than one person at a time on screen and if so then it was only from the waist up.

It also lowers your shadow res from 8192 to 4096 and sets the distance to 8000 - at least it does for me. So remember to manually reset.

Thanks.

Weird thing is that I never changed the FOV or was even aware of it in PC games till now. The little amount you see in your view of this game is staggering.

Using the ati Control panel for AA and mipmap detail made a big difference for me. Im getting pretty smooth frame rates between 40 - 60 High everything radeon 3850 720p res

The only problem is I have this bug where I cant see my firespell/ice spell and also spider webs and the clairvoyance spell. Most other spells and effects work.

I tried the ENB series graphics fix and it works but it makes my frame rate drop to 22fps which is horrible even when everything is on low I get worse frame rate with the fix. I wonder if there is a way to optimize it.

Sounds like you need a better rig, mate.

Thats why you use 2000 or less when taking screenshots to post on GAF

hmmm ok.

Indoor shadows look ace though!

I'm enjoying the colour tweaking with FXAA injector. (No FXAA used though :P)

The only one that matters

100

perfect score

Really? There's a weird tunnel effect at anything over 85... Edges are stretched and gross.

Oops, forgot you play at HHD resolutions.

I still have old generic 1920x1080.

Runs like shit thus far. Even at "high" settings I'm seeing dips into the 30s during the intro sequence. Using a 5870. Any tips? Already tried the d3d9.dll and that didn't do anything.
