I set my FOV to 90 in the .ini day 1 and have never had it reset.
I changed it in the console, saved, quit, set the .ini, never had a problem.

type fov 90 in the console. I'm going to laugh if it changes and it turns out you've been playing with it at 65 this whole time.

I've certainly been at 90. Obviated by the FP animations clipping at the edges and the distortion.
Should really bring it down to 85

Kind of obvious when you can hardly fit anything on screen at 65.

pretty awesome that I can play on my q6600 at 3.2ghz HD5850, high settings, 8xAA, 16xAF FOV 90, with fps around 40-60 most of the time. Although towns it sometimes dips to around 26.

The engine definitely feels a lot more stable and optimized than oblivion.

This is the last bethesda game i buy until they make a friggen new engine. Quad core support and large memory acess should be standard in 2011.

I've asked this question here before and someone might have answered but I left for work after posting it and now can't find it in the thread, so here goes again:

Everything's running fantastically after the install save for this strange flickering that occurs whenever my character turns his head or moves, as if the game's lighting or color palette goes on the fritz whenever there's movement on screen. It's almost unnoticeable indoors but really sticks out at night time, though generally it's hard to ignore once you realize it's happening. I haven't tweaked the graphics yet as I'm pretty satisfied with the way things look and run so far. Anyone know how to fix this?

In SkyrimPrefs.ini, just put it at the bottom of the ini so you know you've added to it since this settings IS NOT in the original ini generated by the game.

[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=100000
iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=3000000000

For kicks, I also ticked down shadow distance from 7000 to 5000 and am at near 60fps detail at this one specific spot that brought me down to the 30's with the same settings before adding the memory tweak here. I'm also using my RadeonPro settings from the OP too.

What should I do if I have 12Gb?

I think I figured it out!

Step 1) Add the following to the MyDocuments Skyrim.ini under [Display]

fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
fDefault1stPersonFOV=XX.0000

Step 2) Add the following to the MyDocuments SkyrimPrefs.ini under [General]

fdefaultfov=XX

Step 3) Load up your game

Step 4) Set FOV using the console to the XX value you used in your .ini's

Step 5) Save

Step 6) Quit

Step 7) Reload your game via the save you just made and verify the fov is now correct!

P.S.: I'm not sure if you need ALL of the .ini settings I listed, but I have them all and my FOV is sticking to the value I want now.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I can believe I forgot about that that is really what is bothering me away.... is the hands/arm are too close... 85 looks good. I'll add that I hope it works for me.

LiquidMetal14 said:
How much RAM do you have? The original is 1.8GB, not 3. I have 8GB RAM so I upped mine.
What value should one put for 4gb? I did not have those commands under payrus.

Logic dictates to set it at 1500000000 so I'll try it with that.

LiquidMetal14 said:
I would leave it at 3 try 4 or so as I don't know if it will make any difference to have it use more. For 12, I may start at 6.

I didn't do anything? Why is it that these things (RP and this setting) help some people and not others?

FOV 85 on a 24" 1920x1200 monitor is goofy though. With a bow out and leather armor on my left arm is clipping bigtime and it looks stupid unless I am looking up.

Start with the default that boob and I posted earlier. It's all dependent on your HW but I manged to increase shadow detail and retain FPS with those ini edits.

From all the reading, this is a Bethesda issue and they've even left out a lot in the ini's that people are discovering. Different HW configs and other variables come into play as well.

yeah but 85 or 90 is good for me.... 720p HDTV
Sooo I really hope this works but I have to go get Halo CEA... :/ this game is like fucking coKAIN...lol

I dunno, still gonna look goofy with certain types of armor on since your arm clips through. With no armor on it's fine, or with a set with "smaller" shoulders.

@Complistic:

If it's anything like Oblivion (and that's a pretty sure bet):

The above values determine how many cells (whether for interior or exterior areas) are buffered into RAM. Note that usually the value of the Exterior Cell Buffer variable is automatically set by the engine based on the size of the uGridstoLoad variable. The higher that variable is, the higher the engine will raise this value. However if you want to smooth out your FPS, try manually setting a higher value for both of these, depending on how much RAM you have. For 1GB I recommend doubling the values (6 and 72 respectively). For 2GB of RAM, I use 16 and 102 respectively. For higher amounts of RAM, try raising them higher, however note that you should also raise the iPreloadSizeLimit value below

Never cared for it, myself (Oblivion being a crash-prone little bitch might've had something to do with it tho). Load screens are fast as it is.

yeah I had some problems too... I had to use openracemenu in the command thing, and fix , my character again... soo useful though. I can go back and change my character any time. I love seeing more of my bow, and my arms when I use magic... it is soo good in this game. I never used it in oblivion.
but yeah I have both in my ini file, and one in perfs, and on steam -fov 85. :(

Complistic said:
Anyone know what
uInterior Cell Buffer=12
uExterior Cell Buffer=64

does and if it's relatively safe?
It is safe. IIRC it determines how many area blocks around your character are loaded into memory. Might cause problems if it's too high and you don't have enough RAM, aren't large address aware, don't have an SSD, etc. - but I set mine to something like 24 interior and 106 exterior with no problems (8GB of RAM, large address aware, and with an SSD).

I haven't heard of a single person who was able to save their FOV setting so please let us know what you did haha. I also think 90 FOV looks weird in this game. 80-85 seems to be the sweet spot

Are you saying it's something you can fix? Or is it just the result of the FOV change?

Ok, thanks guys. It doesn't have the possibility of bricking your save like gridstoload right? If not then I'll mess around with it a little.

Complistic said:

Do not touch it unless you are messing with ugrid.

If using uGrid, I recommend setting uGridToLoad=7 and uExteriorCellBuffer=64. Any higher than that and you'll lose stability. I actually found out the formula for uExteriorCellBuffer, and it's directly tied into uGridToLoad.

DO NOT TOUCH INTERIOR CELL BUFFER. It'll just degrade performance/cause crashes.

Alright so in addition to this happening in every building I enter, my game constantly 'splashing' when I'm in a dungeon with water - where I hear the splash sound effect constantly, have my screen flash, and watch my character sputter around on dry land trying to go into the swimming animation, I'm now beginning to have textures (meshes?) go missing:

ZZ90Sl.jpg

(it's a dragon)

Whaaaaaat the fuuuuuuuck is going on.

If you set FOV through Steam's Launch Options will it break achievements? Also will it remain every time I start the game?

I'd really like to know this because sometimes I load a game and think I'm playing with a custom 75 FOV but when I bring the console and type the command the FOV actually changes, I have to save the game and restart it and it's really annoying at this point.

Anybody else getting huge FPS drops with FOV changes? 80 and above give me like 8-10 FPS loss... weird as hell considering the game's performance seems to depend on CPU speed and my GPU isn't even being pushed hard.

Also strange that changing the overclocks on the GPU makes no difference on FPS, even with FOV raised...

What does this do? Someone asked if it was for ATI only? If it's a performance kick and prevents me crashing when using uGrids I'll buy it at a high price!

so i was running everything fine then i decided to try to radeon pro suggestions in the OP .....

now my fps run in the teens when i was getting a good 30-40 before.

I deleted the profile but hasn't seemed to fix it the drop in framerate

edit: nevermind, had to restart the computer

I dont think its the world fov... every-time I load somewhere it goes back to 65 1stpersonfov.... I want it at 85. the fixing part was my characters chin was to big lol, and it stuck out the Dark Botherhood face cloak thing....

FOV and other console commands do not disable achievements - can we put this in the OP if it's not there already, please?

:( so what about your 1st personfov... I did what the post said... It was fine after load, then I go to my map... go back, the world fov is fine at 85 but the 1st person goes back to 65.... fix yo shit beth. :(

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you guys can answer couple of questions.

I have a semi oldish laptop, does adequate with games like sc2, but I'm not completely sure how it will handle skyrim.

It has an i5 processor, 4gigs of ram, and nvidia 310m.

As far as I know, there is no demo for this game, right? I cant try and see how it will run, unless I borrow my friends steam account and download it?

Anyone have a guess how this laptop will handle skyrim?

I thought I would try everything on low (as that is about the console level) and WTF, how did I used to play like this. I mean it isn't even just about the graphics, it completely changes how I would have to approach the game given the fact enemies etc pop into existence really close. Glad I made the transition to PC gaming.

Edit: that was at 1080p as well so it would look even worse on 360/PS3...

Adaptive AA, try setting it to just multisampling AA.

This worked! Great boosts to framerate. I actually need to limit my framerate now, because indoors I get like 150fps and the physics go crazy.

Faffed around for several hours trying this and that and I reckon this is about as good as I can get it on NVIDIA hardware without resorting to any screenshot trickery or uGrids, and without screwing over distance detail:

Can you share your config? I'll try it in the morning and see if it helps.

EDIT: The VeryHigh.ini in the Steam folder, from which the launcher pulls its settings, has "iMultiSample=16," which I copied across into my SkyrimPrefs.ini. Thing is, 16 doesn't work, which is why the launcher reverts to 8 and puts that in your SkyrimPerfs.ini. Using the exact same config as above I turned iMultiSample to 8 and this is the result:
