I forgot that South Park was one of the original modern shows to have censorship and removal of this kind. It was the wrong decision then, and now other shows that aren't doing anything wrong are getting content pulled for it. I've just switched my Community re-watched over to Amazon because they actually have Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, one of the best episodes, still up. Netflix and Hulu took it down because one character paints himself as a dark elf.
There's nothing wrong with what Community did or what Scrubs did with their episodes while I'm on the subject, because that was the joke. Calling out blackface for what it is in a comedic way. Networks and showrunners pulling episodes are saying that these things are making the given minority the subject of the joke, which is false. In Scrubs, when JD and Turk go to a black fraternity party in black and white face respectively, the joke is that blackface is a bad idea. The entire joke is based around that. I've YouTubed one The Office (US) scene (Schwarte Piet) and again, the joke is how fucking offensive it is and the stupidity and social ineptitude of the characters that enable it are when they do it.
I have heard other shows like 30 Rock that had episodes pulled were more egregious and the some stuff was right to be taken down, but I've not seen those so I can't comment. Because it's so easy for people to miss any subtlety or read between the lines in situations like these, I'll point out that I'm not defending all pulled episodes or scenes from all shows, and I'm not saying because White Chicks did it it's allowed wholesale the other way round. I'm saying that the things I've seen strike me as cases of people having good intentions but flawed execution.
