What is up with the aiming in this game? I don't remember enemies rushing up instantly into your face to where you can't aim at shit other than their torso in the previous game. This is the same problem RE7 had.
In the original, if an enemy was right in front of you, putting up your gun zoomed the camera in so much that it was pointed behind them. It was a common complaint, especially with how worthless melee was.
Also crouching speed is a must, default speed is a joke.
I barely had any issues at all in the first game shooting enemies aside from one fight. I can't shoot shit in this game because they are all Flash zombies and up in my face after the first shot, sometimes before.
Survival first run transitioning into Nightmare in NG+ for me
Oh do they teleport/appear in front of you real quick? (Haven't played the game) Like the stasis enemies from Dead Space 3.
Has it been confirmed that you can even do that?
I don't know why NG+ would be an exception, but they said that you can always lower the difficulty, but never raise it above what it currently is.
In terms of pure atmosphere and just the way they approached the gamedesign this time around it's a bit of a watered down horror experience compared to the first. I do like the new open design from a gameplay standpoint and so far 5 hours in am having a lot of fun. I'll be curious to find out if anything can come close to the level of tension I felt playing TEW1 though with that much freedom to acquire firepower and choose your own path, I somehow doubt it though. It's definitely a different beast, but an interesting one so far.
I'm 6 hours in and I'm still in chapter 3. Holly fuck this game is tough on nightmare. Each enemy can fuck you up if you are not careful, especially the freaky lady with knife. She is fucking fast and can take so much damage. Seriously I hit her with two explosive bolt and two shotgun in close range and she still survived and killed me.
Are you playing on Nightmare? I feel like they really buffed the regular monsters. I find myself having to make more choices on how I engage the enemy.
I'm also oddly excited to hear the allegedly terrible voice acting. That can potentially add to the charm of a horror game, lol.
she's like a L4D witch lol
2 sneak attacks should be enough to do her in though
Thanks!!! This very helpful, My next encounter with her I won't have to waste bunch of bullets on her.
Neiteio I think you'll be pretty pleased with the art direction. I've seen a lot of great stuff and I'm pretty early on.I'm going to dive into this later today. I was a huge fan of the first TEW. This sequel doesn't really resemble it, but I'll make an effort to take the game on its own terms.
I'm a bit concerned by what appears to be less interesting art direction (the first game looked amazing), and I'm also a bit concerned by the apparent lack of gameplay variety in the sequel's bosses, with Rely on Horror (one of the most positive reviews) saying they can all be defeated with regular gunfire.
But still, it might be a case where the game is more than the sum of its parts. I just hope it as individual moments as intensely memorable as TEW1's Laura encounters, Keeper encounters, etc.

Will post my impressions later.
I liked the first game despite its many flaws...but I can't really get a handle on if I'm going to like this one by reading things in here. Impressions are all over the place and with things like Dark Souls 2 being invoked it gives me pause. I think I can safely wait for a price drop since this game is likely to have poor sales.
Ya surprised for the most part it was well done!Ohmy. My headphones can't wait.
idtech has usually some SERIOUS positional audio problems - so this and ACG's review mentioning it's good has me hyped!
The combat in this game is truly something awful and doesn't feel rewarding in the slightest. Even on Survivor, enemies are goddamn bullet sponges (even with the third damage upgrade early on). That's just the normal enemies. Going up against an "elite"? Say goodbye to 20 bullets or all of your bolts.
I just did another expected ambush encounter, and of course I died the first time in three hits to a super speed zombie with bladed hands inside of an enclosed area. Second attempt I unloaded my gun, but it didn't matter because the speed force was there to save the day and hack me to bits. Third attempt I tried using a shock bolt and of course that didn't make it drop, so I unloaded my gun. Didn't matter. Fourth attempt, shock bolt and four harpoon bolts, didn't matter.
Is this just one of those non obvious "You can't kill it, you're supposed to run" encounters?

Having wandered about a bit, I now have some gear and feel a lot more competent. Aiming with pistols just feels bad, only have a shot or two before they are on you. Figured out the leg shot which has helped, though greatly reduced exploding heads ofc.

Is that the onebehind the pile of boxes?
If so, IIRC I took it out with a shot gun blast and an axe. Or something like that. Two shots. This is playing on Nightmare.
You could also try setting an explosive trap.
TEW1 is what I would consider to be a diamond in the rough. There's lots of solid moment-to-moment encounters, good ideas and great atmosphere. There's also lots of bad ones with the ending chapters just totally going full trainwreck. TEW2 has seemed to eschew ambitious but flawed with safe, unambitious design in an attempt to attract a bigger audience.
I don't have a shotgun and I can't make traps yet. It'sJust one of the resonance areas where the the ghost was standing near a circuit breaker and talks about how there's a cache below. You do the "puzzle", activate the power and then a door opens in the room beside you. This white female zombie with bladed hands shuffles out and as soon as she spots you, you're pretty much dead. She zooms up on you, the camera and aiming go to shit and you're dead.
As I said in my edit, the axe would probably work, but I don't have one. Can you even store them as a reserve? You're limited to one at a time, and it seems to override the default melee attack if you pick one up without being able to save it for later.
Does anyone know whether removing 'communicator signal information' from the hud completely removes that aspect? Like do the white signals which point you towards ammo and such vanish completely?
Also, don't be afraid to come back later. There are other weapons you can get in the level that will make it easier.
You can't store it but the game won't use it up when you do stealth kills. After you find an axe (there are several laying around the level) don't do any head on melee attacks (not sure if stomp will trigger the axe) but you are safe to do stealth kills and smash boxes without fear of losing it.
I knew that stealth kills didn't eat up the axe. Problem is, while trying to save it for later, I keep ending up in a situation where I have to use it. Either that, or waste all of my ammo on regular enemies because they simply don't drop or die like in TEW or RE4.
Hate having to do that in these kinds of games. It was different in the earlier RE games where you basically ran past a zombie or hunter to get items from an area that you know you wouldn't need to go back to (more than once at most).
Leaving work shortly - going to start this game on Nightmare
In terms of upgrades, what would you all suggest are must haves in the beginning?
Did you bump up the headshot critical percentage? That combined with head shots is way, way more reliable than general gun damage.
Also harpoon + stomp is a great combo too.
In general the combat is much, much closer to RE4 combat than TEW1's combat was. So it's more effective to soften enemies up and then stomp, kick (if you have the upgrade), etc. And liberal use of the 180 quick turn and sprinting to keep them off of you.
Critical doesn't unlock before doing the damage upgrades, and I don't have enough parts for it yet. Plus, the first upgrade is only a 1% chance.
Also, how the hell do you even use the quick turn outside of dashing? It does nothing unless I'm already running.
