The Evil Within 2 |OT| "Something not quite right"

do you have the predator skill? Also does every area are big like the one of chapter 3? i've explored everything and it was quite long just for this chapter!
Some of the chapters are straightforward and very short, they're not all big open areas. And I haven't gotten the predator skill yet.

Again I think something is lost because of it, that helpless dread of the first game just can't be replicated by a design that gives the player so much control, but what is gained makes a cool game in its own right as well. I'd argue it's not as unique as the first one because of that, but then again... it's a quasi open world horror game and that's not a sentence you hear usually. So what do I know, only that I hope Tango and Mikami get lots of opportunities and money for more projects, because what they deliver is pretty interesting.

I just don't get the "less dread" thing. For most of TEW i felt no dread whatsoever. The bosses and early village chapters were excellent exceptions. (And the entire DLC.)

But in TEW2 i constantly feel under threat. I've died several times on Normal and it was fairly traumatic and in the open world there are constant hints of danger all around and in the distance. Even just seeing a figure standing far away under a street light...

The dread is palpable for me. Much more so than the first.

Not on PC it doesn't.

I'm on PC and it's fine, great even. But I have a very high end machine.

Chapter
10
and I'm really enjoying it so far, minor a few complains. I'm also enjoying the story, surprisingly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I idn't like the first one all that much story wise, is this any better and worth picking up?

Gameplay is considered considerably better. Story kinda doubles down on the nonsense?
So it depends?

Definitely doesn't double down on the nonsense. Well, at least not narratively. TEW2 actually explicitly tells you what's going on and what you're doing, unlike the first game which obscures almost all the plot points and goes with a weird, trippy adventure literally from start to finish.

The actual story is still hammy Inception by way of Resident Evil cheese.

I bought this yesterday with so so expectations as the first one was fun but very flawed. Have to say so far, about two hours in, this is amazing. It's the first horror game this gen I've really gotten in to. In my opinion, it's almost like the silent hill game I've been craving for this gen.

Exactly my feeling. It's a pity I'm so busy this weekend/week, literally all I want to do is delve back into Union. This could be my GotY, it's like a Silent Hill Downpour but actually together in terms of combat/encounter design.

The stealth is really working for me, too. If you change the Cover control to Toggle instead of Hold it feels completely like Splinter Cell Conviction/Blacklist or The Division, where you can quick-run from cover to cover. Really solid cover/stealth system.

Pretty stupid that corner stealth kills are locked behind a tree though :/ skill trees should be there to hyperpower yourself, not to unlock basic shit.

Asking again since it's a new page

So.... i bought the PREDATOR skill.... and it doesn't work at all, i'm kinda pissed off!

Did i miss something? How does it works? Cause the thing they said in the tutorial definitely doesn't work

It seems like it's either bugged or if you're on Nightmare the range is reduced to nothing.

If you have an earlier save, go back and buy something else.

This is a much better game than the massively flawed original, which got a free pass because it was directed by Shinji Mikami. Mind you its not a patch on RE 7

I think RE7 is far more tightly designed and polished - but TEW2 has got the total immersion and ambition/experimental factor for me which is placing it way above RE7. TEW2 feels almost STALKER-esque at times.

Is this the corner stealth kill ability?

I just saw the trophy guide on YouTube by powerpyx and noticed he mentioned something curious about having the target being in the center of your screen

Edit: sorry it’s the skill description “the enemy must be in the center of the screen for the sneak kill icon to appear”

Ended up picking up the PC version. I loved the first and the reviews have restored my faith in the game. Seeing some of my favourite Twitch streamers play it also helped a lot.

I feel like chapters 3 and to a lesser degree part of 7 make you run around following the communicator markers just so the player is encouraged to actively explore and find valuables that aren't on the crit path, unfortunately this has a negative effect on players who are already capitalizing on the exploratory rewards, if you're like me, and like to explore a new zone as soon as you enter, you're sort of punished with a bunch of retreading over the same areas. If this is just kinda turorialising, I expect that back half of the back won't have this minor annoyance. [I worded all of that extremely poorly but I think y'all can extrapolate what I'm saying here.]
One other small criticism, while I like a bunch of the art and design work for this game, much of the Marrow and a good chunk of Union are impressively dull, the Marrow in particular reminds me a lot of those drab city levels in the first game, minus some interesting vistas. All of the linear set-piece sequences have looked dope though.

No it's not corner stealth kill, I think it's the one that lets you 'warp' a short distance, so you can stealth kill enemies from further away.

But it's evidently badly bugged (or terribly designed but that's less likely).

i've been using it on PC with some success

look for the "cover arrow" (the little arrow that appears on cover you can hide behind) but on an enemy as you approach from behind. then hit the cover button to initiate the approach. hit the stealth kill button when the normal stealth kill icon appears (the tutorials said "e", but I'd since rebound it to "q" -- pressing "e" did nothing and it led to me sprinting into the back of enemy -- not good).

like i said i never got the red arrow, been trying from every angle and distance on a normal zombie.... hope it gets patched

Very interesting. Fyi i don't have the skill, just reporting what others said on the last page.

So basically it allows you to treat enemies as cover and "cover run" to them?

What a terribly convoluted solution. Perhaps increasing the range of the contextual attack button led to issues.

Two questions.

Do you recommend aim assist?

Which upgrade in stealth makes you move faster when crouching?

Anyone?

Anyone else not get their preorder bonus from Best Buy? At least it was only some random supplies and nothing major, but still...

Most didn’t. If you go on the support forums, a Best Buy employee stated that they thought the codes would be in the box. Said they have no codes from Bethesda, but are working on it. I’m pissed.

So far I feel like TEW2 is a more consistent game than TEW, but has lost a bit of that game’s character. The fact it’s so easily comparable to Silent Hill and TLoU is a tad disappointing.

I agree they’re both weaker than RE7. My thoughts after beating TEW were that it was a shame that Mikami and Capcom hadn’t stayed together, because Resident Evil could have benefitted from the strength of vision Mikami had whereas Mikami could really have benefitted from the tighter design that RE is usually known for (6 notwithstanding). After RE7 though, it felt like Capcom had made a better RE game without Mikami than Mikami had made without Capcom

Anyone?

Aim assist definitely helps, you’ll still have some difficulty lining up the perfect shot so it’s not like it’s a complete cheat.

Problem is you can only enable it in survival difficulty.

Is it just me, or is the "bottle to the face + stab" combo that worked so well in TEW1 almost useless in this? Ive gotten it to work once. It sems like almost every enemy just shrugs off the bottle and doesn't get staggered.

Also, is there any way to kill those
singing ghosts
??

Question about one of the sub-quests in chapter 3

The one about the ghost. I already did it and now she shows up at random points every 15-20 minutes or so. Should I try to kill her or just hide till she's gone?

just run on the opposite direction, you will eventually leave the
"haunted" zone and then she'll disappear

didn't actually try to kill her

I haven't really tested the boundaries of the system, but yeah, that's the best way of describing it.

Seems to be way harder to do for me too so I just gave up trying it.

I’m playing survivor. Screw nightmare, lol. Just making sure it’s useful but not baby mode.

I just got another handgun... At first this game without upgrading weapons and stats was kicking my ass, but now on chapter 11 everything is clicking into place. I love this game so very much and I hope we get a third game, or at the very least some DLC.

About the only useful thing for bottles is as an anti-grab once you have that skill. They do jack all for diverting attention and trying to setup that stun combo.

With the combo I think the issue is they don’t stay stunned very long.

Does anyone know how to get into the warehouse area in union chapter 3? I had to kill two zombie creatures behind a padlocked gate and press a switch, the area inside has stairs going up on the left and a plank of wood blocking the lower right side.

What. Bottles have got me out of like 5 life-or-death binds and I'm only 4 hours in. I haven't used them as a stun-then-stab tool yet but apparently they're great for that.

Git gud? :P

it's a scripted area, you'll go there later

This silent hill downpour chat makes me want this game more. I really enjoyed that silent hill.

You will fucking love this, mate. Honestly. It feels like a slightly more action oriented Silent Hill with Downpour's world design.

Though tbh if i was going to go full listicle on the inspirations I'd say it's Resident Evil 4 meets Silent Hill meets Metal Gear Solid meets Twin Peaks meets The Last of Us meets STALKER meets The Evil Within 1.

And imo it carefully picks out and combines literally all the best bits of all these games.

Yeah, this definitely is SH: Downpour done right. Exploreable small town with lots of small one-off unique events and side quests. This game is so much better than TEW.

My main issue with the game so far is how it locks basic movement/combat options behind the skill tree. It's probably something I'll only have to worry about on my first playthrough, but still. You shoot an enemy's leg, they get stunned for a period of time just long enough to make sure the player can run up to them, so you do it, and you don't have the skill that lets you kick the shit out of them. Why?

Skill trees should make progression more rewarding and fun, not the first few hours more boring and limited. At least they gave us the stomp, so there's that. I like the increased stamina, though. I didn't mind it in the first game, it made sense, but I do enjoy the sequel giving me something a little closer to how my character actually was in the first one after the upgrades than having to do it all over again.

It might be a stupid question but how do you change texture detail and other options on the PC? The graphic options are really bare bones, are these all?

Whatever the bottom option is under graphics, advanced settings or something similar

Agreed. Seems like a superficial way to add difficulty. I couldn't believe stealth kill from cover was an upgrade and not something you can just do.

So far, so really good. I've only played until the beginning of chapter 3, but I'm already enjoying it more than TEW. The sound design is fantastic, and it is a major step up, graphically, from the first. And I'm not even bothered by the voice acting. Loving it so far.

Not sure if this is thread worthy but Bethesda confirmed on the support forums that a Pro/XB1X patch is coming.

We're working on an update for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. When we have more information, we'll happily update you. Thanks!
