The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Slayer is fun, but lacking in xrd (in my opinion). He requires good reads, and requires some balls to play well. He has some bad match ups, and comes off a bit too honest when compared to the other bullshit in the game.

Yeah- with Slayer it seems like you have to squeeze every bit of blood from the stone (the general system mechanics) to have success with him against high level players (kind of like Pot, I guess?). I feel like you can still have some success with him pretty easily at lower levels of play with scrubby stuff though- mash that 6P, haha.

I've gone into his stream and offered to show him ky stuff before :P He turned it down. I only offer once. I got too much shit I like doing to sit around and beg to help people that don't want help or advice.

That's sick, I totally would have whiffed on that super knowing how anxious I get when it comes to comebacks.

Getting better at it though. Nice job again!

!

Speaking of comebacks I usually go into zen mode at times it's weird I focus a bit more. it's like "well I got nothing to lose so the pressure is on him to close out"

Man the competition on XBL is brutal but so good, 3s boys until V has come to. Ken B.O.Y.S

All the Alex and Urien rumors made me curious, so I started playing 3S more seriously (tried it before, but it didn't stick) and it's the most fun I've ever had with a Street Fighter title. Alex and Urien are pretty cool. Too bad Alex is kinda balls. I think this will be my primary street fighter title for a long time to come.

Alex is a bit hard to use, but in the right hands he's quite deadly since he got that command grab plus he can stun you in an instant. Urien is a beast with good normals all around and that aegis reflector mixups be having me like

How do you deal with Milla in Xrd anyway? I've only played one but I've seen plenty of top players use her and she seems just as fast as Chipp with even faster mixups (though no teleports, obviously).

Dragonlife didn't get Xrd, really? :/ I figured you two would be peas in a pod on that given your TF2-buddy-buddyness.

He's probably broke, as usual. Spent all his money on Smash Bros. DLC and building a Bayonetta shrine :^)

So ive been playing fighting games for like a year and always feel like i can get better. The game i seem to focus on USF4 but im definetely going to be switching to SFV when it drops.
Also i sadly cant use eathernet cause my router is downstairs.

Was practicing in blazblue with the drill lady with her scarf (idk names :o) her scarf only hits from far away, I was just playing her online like a zoner and each time someone got close they would get the drill

Well I realized that too, but I'm not going to say drill guy. Because I'm sure there's another drill guy right? I haven't really seen every character, lots of azazel or whatever that blue haired guy is

All that matters is that she/he is fun to play with, actually T a lot of them are fun to play and have their neat little gimmicks.

Game is super fun and is my first entry to anime fighters if you don't count skullgirls

Don't let her get the sweep and start her setup. If that's already happen then you just block her shit and try to look for an opening. Either that or burst.

What games would you guys recommend to brush up on basic fighting game skills before Street Fighter V, anyway?

My current options are Ultra Street Fighter IV, King of Fighters XIII Steam Edition, or Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (and I have Ryu for that).

I was thinking USF4, but just the basics. I've never been able to FADC, and with under two months left, I'm not going to try and learn how to anymore. That was my execution limit in SF4. I just couldn't get my hands to cooperate with MP+MK, f, f, qcfx2 PPP for Ryu's basic FADC Ultra.

Melty Bits is a resource guide for some of the Melty Blood. I've been practicing irregularly for that Steam release with my PS2 copy.

Anyone got any tips Ram in Xrd? I somewhat got the PK juggle off, but not sure what specific moves let me start it besides 214K.

You can always try Rising Thunder if you don't want to deal with SF4 execution barrier.
Ah, right. I keep forgetting that exists. That game just makes me wish One Must Fall: 2097 ever got a sequel. The only fighting game I was ever good at.

But I don't think Rising Thunder is what I'm looking for as a SFV warmup. I mean, I can do a Dragon Punch motion, the real one, not just the shortcut. I just have trouble with cancels. Especially canceling into cancels. I wish games would somehow signal when that was possible to do.

Sure but that's also part of the execution and Rising Thunder has a generous buffer for that.

Also its more than just being able to pull of the DP motion with rising thunder, it also lets you do reversals on reaction better, and makes combos easier. You have the equivalent of FADC and extended combos with very simple inputs.

As for when and what can be cancelled depends on the game and character, something you need to learn. FADC is a universal mechanic in SF4, but in other games not every move might be special cancellable for a character and that's something you have to learn. But hey that's pretty much every fighting game, you have to spend the time learning all their unique quirks and mechanics.

If anybody is interested in knowing more about ArcSystemWorks games or French Bread games feel free to hit me up. I've been explaining things in the FGC threads for years, but I don't mind going over whatever new players wanna know. I'm sure some people can vouche for me, I try to help out a lot.

Ive played a bunch and i personally have been not enjoying it alot for a lot of the things like 1 frame links, and focus.
Also no body who i enjoy to play. I like Juri as a character but i dont love playing her. No body really flows with me like Alex.

Can't blame you. There are alternatives on fightcade. What's more your game?

I like playing skullgirls a lot but one touch death scares me away from online. I like third strike a lot but i suck lol. I also like KoF exclusively for Terry, and Joe to a lesser extent. But mind you i am trash at all of them lol.

He's a semi grappler whose best grab is his normal one lol. Urien is a lion trapped in the same cage as the Tiger that is Chun-Li.

IV may help with V though, take caution.
IV helped me in the beta. I did a lot of mashing invincible reversals, mashed lights, empty jumped low, and got away with back dashing too much. I won me some games. Once people get those crush counters punishes down though we'll see... That's the only hype thing going for Ken is he gets a big punish with his crush counter (using his run).

Guys, I'm thinking about getting GGXrd.

Can you tell me some things?

Does PS4 Xrd allow PS3/Usb controllers? I don't have any good fg pad for PS4.

Is online on PS3 decent and alive in Europe? I don't have anyone to play offline.

I'd appreciate the answers.

If anyone is interested in SFxT, a really good tournament was uploaded today. All Japanese players, great team variety. Please watch!

Thanks for this. SFxT needs some love.

I mean it's hard to give a critique that has any meaning at all off of one video (especially a video against a guy who doesn't seem to know how to play Hugo; pretty sure he could've supered your kikoken like 50 different times), but I'd say that you need to learn how to antiair because I didn't see you antiair once. Granted, antiairing is probably the hardest thing about playing Chun. When in doubt, focus backdash as antiair when you're playing Chun. Just make sure not to start the focus early enough that it can be reacted to and punished. I'll also say that you tend to go inside when you have the life lead, which is a really unnecessary risk, especially since Chun zones Hugo out pretty well.

Chun is probably the closest thing to a main I've had for the past few years in SF4, so I'd be happy to play you sometime and give you a more in-depth critique. Just not until Sunday or so because I'll be pretty busy until then.

After this past Beta I accepted that I will always be garbage, that said I would still like to try to improve.

Please point to the places that need to be cut the fuck out.

Things I already know I need to work on:
Air to air too late, jump too much, don't punish well, get a better handle on my ranges, don't just throw out specials, don't freeze up when Gief runs at me, and do more safe block strings. Also work on execution so much.

The one thing I feel I did right is read that Laura and A2A'd her after she jumped each time my fireball hit.....after failing to do so several times.

Battle fantasia as odd as that sounds

If u tot garou motw from the snk humble bundle u should play that vis fightcade since it follows a similar base system as sf5

Im thinking of giving up on playing SF4 mainly cause V is coming out and i dont enjoy playing as any characters.
Bail out if none of the characters suit your style. There's enough parallel between Third Strike and V for important habits to seamlessly carry over, and plenty of peeps in here play it over Fightcade.

I'm using a stick for the first time properly (I've dabbled on and off but never stick to it) in... ranked lol trial by fire. Put my DS4 in another room so I'm not tempted to unplug and go back. The reason I'm playing ranked funny enough is because Endless is full of 3/4/5k fighters chillin. Can get someone more around my rank (730 pp lol avervage is 500)

Watch the first episode of Beta Adventures linked in the SF resource in the op. That should help.
Yeah I'd already watched it but every now and then I fuck up and jump in. Last night was better for me though for not doing it, had much more success.
