The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Guys, I'm thinking about getting GGXrd.

Can you tell me some things?

Does PS4 Xrd allow PS3/Usb controllers? I don't have any good fg pad for PS4.

Is online on PS3 decent and alive in Europe? I don't have anyone to play offline.

I'd appreciate the answers.

PS4 only allows official PS4 peripherals or 3rd party things specifically modified to work on PS4. The online is all unified (PS3 people and PS4 people all play together) so it doesn't matter which you play on- it's just the one single playerbase. Dunno about how many people actively play online in Europe though.

Everyone, quick question about frame data and comboability of moves. Never really looked at frame data before, so just trying to understand it - is it used more to understand priority post a move or can it also be used to determine when two moves can combo? The video posted earlier was very helpful, but not fully getting this question.

For example, in sfiv, ryu's cr LP is +5 on hit, and his cr MP has a 4 frame startup, so the two can combo. I get that...

But guile's cr LP is +4 on hit, yet you can combo another cr LP after it even though it has a 4 frame startup. Why is that? Is the fact that this can combo into itself totally separate from the frame data?

Guile's cr.LP is +5 and starts up in 4f. So it's a 2f link.. I think.

That's something I've been confused about as well. If an attack is +5f on hit and the next attack starts up in 5f, then it's a 1f link. If it's +5f and the next attack starts up in 4f it's a 2f link.

or something

You can definitely use frame data to help determine when two moves can combo. In this case, the combos are "links" in that you're connecting a move after the previous attack completely recovers. This is contrasted with "cancels" where recovery frames are cut short with additional input, like in chains, target combos, special cancels, etc.

There's two different schools of how startups are listed in frame data:

1) The startup includes the first active frame of the attack. Meaning, if a move is said to have 5f startup, the first 4 frames are the actual startup and the 5th is when the attack comes out.

2) The startup is purely the startup. Meaning, if a move is said to have 5f startup, all 5 of those are actual startup, and the attack is active on frame 6.

Approach #1 seems to be common for at least 2D fighters, I think. I'm not completely sure why this is used over #2, but I guess not having to add +1 makes it easier for some people. :P

So to go your specific example: cr.LP is listed as 4f startup. However, this means 3 frames of actual startup and the attack coming out on the 4th frame. So it'll combo after moves that are +4 or higher on hit.

Clear as mud? :)

You are right on guile's frame data. Seems like I was looking at the AE frame data for cr LP, which was changed for ultra.

Last I heard, the European console versions don't even run on the latest patch and even a couple of characters are omitted. Playerbase will likely be very limited, if not non-existent.

Arc System Works really likes that side of the world.

maybe this is a dummy question
but bloodborne/darksouls invasions can be considered like a fighting game?

im a soul calibur player and i have met others soul calibur players that are good in darksouls games

be free of making jokes about my question :)

MKX uses skullgirls driver that allows any usb or ps3 controllers. Seems like other developers don't want to use it. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, I won't bother with this game then.

The last frame is active.

Yep, very clear. If someone else could confirm that 2D fighter frame data convention is to include the first frame of the actual hit on the startup count, that would be great.
Yes at least in street fighter. This is how you can trade hits with someone and still get the counter hit as counter hit only happens on start up frames.

The logic behind a good action game is identical to a fighting game, minus the psychology at play. You are not wrong.

Do counters and reversals give more damage? The game isn't clear about this.
Counters do a bit more damage and add frames to their recovery so links that weren't possible before are now possible . Reversals I'm not a 100 percent sure if it does more damage but it does add armor break properties to he move .

Reversals don't do more damage, they just break focus (with exceptions like most projectiles). Counterhit moves do 20% more damage (?).

T6 or TTT2? What region?
If you're from Europe, add me: UchihaSasuke_91
I'm not really a DJ player, but maybe I can help in some way.

Hello sasuke_91,

Thank you, I will update my profile with region. I have both T6 and TT2. I really need to learn the basics of the game in preparation for Tekken 7 so I am open to whatever I can learn from you :)

West Coast USA is too far away. We won't get a playable connection, sorry :/

The PC version is the latest version (of Xrd) worldwide at least. Still comes with all the DLC as well.

On that note: just got the World Tour achievement in the PC version:

[Ranked Match] Defeated a higher ranked opponent.

Only took me like 50 losses in a row, because you need to be at least rank 11 and beat someone 3 ranks above you, and the only people already at that rank are the best players who double-dipped and already know the game through and through.

To be fair only playing high level opponents felt like a speed course on the game mechanics.

Battle fantasia as odd as that sounds

If u tot garou motw from the snk humble bundle u should play that vis fightcade since it follows a similar base system as sf5
Battle Fantasia? This one? I suppose I can see some similarities in the Heat Up thing the trailer mentions to V-Triggers in SFV. I can't imagine this game having an active online community, though. Does it have a good tutorial, then?

I didn't know there was an SNK Humble Bundle, so no Gatou for me. I've at least heard that name before, though.

After this past Beta I accepted that I will always be garbage, that said I would still like to try to improve.

Please point to the places that need to be cut the fuck out.

Things I already know I need to work on:
Air to air too late, jump too much, don't punish well, get a better handle on my ranges, don't just throw out specials, don't freeze up when Gief runs at me, and do more safe block strings. Also work on execution so much.

You pretty much got every thing I was gonna say. To keep yourself from jumping in so much try to be patient. Gief has to come to you. So let him.

Hey does anyone with a powrline adapter know if having a house with older wiring will affect anything at all, or if the powerline will affect any other connections in my house, such as the rest of my famalies on wireless

At my place, which is fairly old, most outlets worked, while a few didn't. No wireless connections were affected

Took gootecks' advice, to learn matchups I struggle with I'm using those characters. First up was Blanka.

Great evening, quickly went into the lab and then up against real folks. Started out at 650pp, now 1400. Not many (like myself) knew wtf to do. Next will be Gief, Ibuki and Juri, those 3 I have problems with.

One good about that is that you find holes in that character and now find a way to defend against them.

Some Sin Progress

Got lucky in the first match then learned that I can't block against Millia
and probably will never be able too tbh

I still can't get a reversal out on wakeup to save my life, so it's pretty much just free pressure when I'm knocked down. Each time I fail to get the reversal it's just more counter hits. much fun

Blockin' against Millia online ayyyy

So I was playing e ryu and like every version of mk is just too good lol, just getting in there from so long feels so good but I don't see myself using ace kick for anything that isn't wake up. I did use it for a combo to end the game: m.axe, red focus, cr.mk, ex. Tatsu, ultra.

Tbh it was my second time using red focus in a match ever

You use axe kick for combos, for example: cl. hp, m.axe kick, cr mp, lk tatsu, hp dp

Edit: And EX Axe Kick is a decently fast overhead.

This makoto ate me up trying ex axe kick

The close hp to axe kick is possible right? I'm doing all of his other specials after it but maybe I'm not doing it on time
