The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Go with Poison instead of Fei Long if your plan is to play Karin but don't like Fei. She also has a rekka.

Yang is also an option if you want a character with rekkas.
Fei Long, Poison, or Yang... Seems like the choice is clear, then: Rose!

Because Karin, like Rose, has nice legs. ...let me rephrase that. Their kick buttons are awesome. Rekkas are an hour in training mode, tops, to figure out. The art of when to kick, how to kick, and when not to kick? That'll transfer right over.

I suppose the plan for today is fairly staightforward, then. Take Rose to the lab, try to remember a few basic 2-3 hit combos so I have some ammo when I actually get an opening... and then go kick people. And cr. MP, because if I remember right that move is killer. Cr. MP xx Spiral, if I remember right.

Got home from the bar. Had GG on the mind while face was in a pint.

Here's progress.

A polite and very beautiful soul commented on one of my XRD videos and gave some tips on what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. Here I am trying in theory to implement that into my game plan against a very, very skilled player.

I know what to work on with I-No now:

1. More bread and butter knockdown combos.

2. Practice wake up and meaty options.

3. Learn to take advantage of her I think it's 412 S/H? to go through fbs.

4. Work on spacing and how to implement those air dives into my game.

5. Study high level I-No play.

6. Stop mashing out lights on dash attacks. I use slash and heavy slash on this fight but still mash out lights sometimes out of habit.

7. Remember to not do ANYTHING while under assault unless there's an option to get out of the situation by hitting punch and/kick.

GGXRD as prep for V? very interesting... makes sense. I bought it myself recently but haven't got around to it.

I'm EU psn Assassio if anyone wishes to spar/teach with it.

I'll be playing on PC, don't have a PS4.

demanding fighting games on PC should have have a mandatory option to revert to the lowest quality settings for non-private online play

FPS fluctuation between different computers totally messes gameplay. Joined a lobby titled for beginners, then some intermediate players joined. I did not mind the beating and the trolling as much as the tiresome underwater gameplay. May is perhaps the easiest to control but the hardest to win with.

Hence why PS4 version is better in this regard.

You can anti-air someone and throw a fireball so it hits them as they land, which isn't okizeme. (Unless is really is, and my personal definition is wrong)

Oki is wakeup, no?

So you throw a fireball right when they get up to apply pressure and force them to block. or you think they're going to DP so you walk into their space and crouch punch them to block their DP with an attack.

That's my understanding of it at least. Both are meaty, both are wakeup pressure tactics.

You're correct. Oki is just pressuring/mixing up the opponent when they are on knockdown to get another knockdown. What I-no does with her fireball I would consider oki same as Millia.

Here is some gameplay from a couple of nights ago . I'm drunk so my inputs are kinda sloppy. If anyone has advice , critiques, questions ..all are welcome...only my second time posting gameplay to GAF so please be gentle

Not much to critique because you seem like a better player than me but your overuse of sweep with Akuma - any reason why? Its recovery is 24 frames and is -9 on block. It feel like if you were playing a better player he would have punished your sweeps more readily because that was a glaring hole in your Akuma. Sweep is not a poke and shouldn't be used as a poke. If you were playing me I would have weaved out of your sweep range, then counter swept you and pushed you in the corner.

Oh yeah. I-No and Millia are both bout that knockdown steez.

While I definitely did some bad sweeps against the Hawk especially with in SPD range,t he wasn't punshing it , in fact he was just blatantly walking into it so there was no real reason for me to stop. If you watch the cody match I did 3 sweeps during the entire match and 2 landed but cause he was crouch blocking a lot I didn't do it much at all . Akumas sweep is a 6 frame start up so its pretty quick and if properly spaced -9 is extremely hard to punish for most of the cast so its actualy a decent poke. Plus the hard knock down can lead into huge damage. I was contempating vortexing the hawk but he stopped that with a nice auto correct dp so I said screw it . Vortexing grapplers with 2 frame grabs as Akuma is terrifying

Haha, so it was just player response? Hahahaha.

But he has 3000 pp and 4k bp? And this was on ps4? Sounds about right.

He's actually pretty good. In his defense , I know him well and use that against him. As a KOF player he's impatient but if he catches you on your heels it's done... T.Hawk is a match up that you have to control the pace of the match if you let him rush you down and get you flustered it can be over in 3 setups ...2 for Akuma..

T-Hawk is tough, but you did well.

Tell him to be more patient! Did you tell him about the sweeps?

Few basic I-No stuff:

- Dashing in with I-No during neutral without cover is a mistake unless spaced to hit them with j.HS at maximum range, which make it a little bet safer. Generally, you'd be using j.HS a lot, wither after dashes or jumps, it's a great move

- YRCs are essential for I-No, HCL-YRC > dash in, note-YRC when you're finding a hard time getting notes out during neutral is a good idea

- Air note travel faster than ground note so learn to use TK air notes, in a lot of situations you have to go for TK air note after knockdown to make them block the it since regular note is too slow to reach in time

There's a lot to say, but this early on when you just picked the character, it's better to concentrate on learning bnbs and oki stuff before getting overwhelmed with info. That and once the general flow of matches with I-No sinks in, it will be easier take in the more specific stuff.

I mean when they get anti-aired but hit the ground on their feet. Like with Dhalsim's b.mp, for example.

That is a reset state...you can get a reversal out of that ... so 6 of one half a dozen of the other? Just to be clear to get the reversal notification you have to perform a move on the first frame that you are able to move, be it from getting up off the ground , a reset state or from block/hit stun ane maybe even from a dizzy?. So seems like the exact same thing to me...unless my definitons are wrong...

I'm talking about whether or not all meaties are okizeme. Throwing a fireball so that your opponent lands on it as they are recovering from an anti-air would be a non-okizeme meaty, would it not?

Hmm...maybe not. The example you provided I might still call an oki simply because you can get a reversal move out of it with reversal properties (armor break) . I dunno...lol..please don't take this a me being dismissive but I beleive it's semantics. It's funtionally the same thing IMO

Get to it. It's amazing. It's the most impressive fighter I've played since the 00's in terms of mechanics and presentation. It's really my cup of tea.

Only issue so far is the music. There's nothing on par with this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_pzVbU2MtM

IMO, it fully pushes Arc Systems into Capcom and SNK tier.

Guilty Gear! <3
You can unlock "Blue Water Blue Sky" from the gallery and use it. Otherwise, Xrd's original stuff are a bit lackluster. Revelator's opening is far better than any original made for Xrd, imo:

In your opinion? No it's FACT. Xrd Sign's opening SUCKS. When I booted up the game I was on the edge of my seat. "GUILTY GEAR MELT MY FACE OFF WITH A BADASS OPENING WITH WICKED MUSIC :D"

I got no opening after the initial logo start up crap. I wanted to CRY.

So I let it sit at the start screen to see if there's an opening, and there was! But it was a dude narrating crap. Why?!

Arc, why?

I still don't think Revelator is on par with XX's intro...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn-AgoYh0PQ

but it's a good replacement for Xrd Sign's doo doo opening.

If arcades were still a thing, and Xrd's machine were in attract mode, I would not put a quarter in that machine based off its opening. It is that important to me.

What should I do in prep for SFV? I'm a scrub for sure, I loved MKX but I sucked at it. I have a Razor Atrox now that has barely seen any play (XB1 version of it).

Should I just mess around Ultra SF4 or buy GGXrd? I have USF4 but won't object to buying GG. Also have Killer Instinct but I'm not just in the mood.

Weird thing is May's theme was my #1 when I first started playing XX. Come AC my fave was and still is Millia's theme. But I love the whole OST so it's whatever. Also GGX Heavy Rock Tracks > any of those themes in XX.

I'll admit the Xrd OST has grown on me, but it's still lacking something.

Ultra. That way you can work on fundamentals that will carry over to V.

IMO, pick any game that you prefer. Any 2d game should theoretically help prepare you fro SFV so long as you're aware of basic 2d fighting game principles. But for the sake of pragmatism, my gut says Ultra.
