The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Aight, explain this one for me pls
kttcolicomeon

I have given up on playing fps games competitively.

I have been fucking shit at fighting games though, part of me wants to get better though. It's just so hard to remember all that entails.

The gameplan is the same as when you fight Zato. You gotta get in that ass. Your neutral tools are better than hers so you use them accordingly. Don't let her get the knockdown on you because if she does get ready to RPS.
I tried to AA with 6P like 4 times and it only worked once (I had other matches outside of the two in the video) shit feels so unreliable
You just gonna have to put in time to see when you can get the reversal. Another thing to try is avoid the set up of that combo as well.
And now count you know how I feel in SF :P

avoid the set up? nigga she gets a set up after everything. Might as well say just don't get hit.

And in SF Ibuki/El Fuerte aren't even this bad, I could at least get a DP out when I want it lol

Well, didn't feel all that good today, so I just stuck with putting Rose to work in the lab. Just to check my current execution level. It went something like this: *Dragon Punch motion* "Soul Spark!" That move is Half Circle Forward, so... yeah.

45 minutes and many repetitions later and I did ten Soul Throws in a row both ways. So that's Dragon Punch back to where it used to be. Probably 90%, but good enough for now.

I also messed a bit with finding an okay combo that's easy to do, and, well, it's not fancy in the slightest, but cr MK -> MK Spiral is dead easy to pull off. It's not the best, not by a long shot, but it's the one I can do, so that'll have to be. Ended with setting up a Sagat to toss plasma at me, with one EX in the mix somewhere, just to do some Reflect training. I didn't know HP Reflect was a launcher. I certainly didn't know it combos into Super or Ultra 2. So that's something to play with, then go find a D to C rank player in ranked and see how it stacks up.

So, I'm glad I did this so far, it would have been ugly in SFV if I couldn't do Dragon Punch motions there.

For Ibuki's kunai setup you could focus back dash out of it too. But no one blocks cross up dive kicks.

Keep playin nigga and you will see, I don't play Sin. I'd tell you to scum bag it with his grandfather or Elphelt but nah.

As far as combos go you're doing fine. At most you only really need to learn three mor combos. In order of hardest to easiest
cr.lp > cr.lk >cr. mp xx Spiral
Close st.MK > cr. mp xx Spiral
Cr. HP xx Spiral

You can in fact combo into super and ultra from the HP reflect. Super requires a bit of strange timing and usually it's just better to cancel spiral into super. Does more damage and it's a lot simpler to combo into.

Rose is a good character to start with and once you learn a couple of combos you can use those forever at all levels of play.

Oh, right, totally didn't think about Super-cancelling a Spiral. I actually learned that HP Reflect to Super by accident. I was going for a Soul Throw, you see...

Actually, for that, I have an input question. Super is qcfx2+P. Spiral is qcf+K. So, is a super cancelled Spiral "qfc+K, qcfx2+P" or is "qcf+K, qcf+P" enough? Basically, can I reuse the first qcf?

I've always used both full inputs. If you input it fast enough you most likely could though.

You can also use ho refoect to combo into soul throw in the corner.

I'd like to get in on some Xrd. I haven't played since like May I think, so it's been awhile. I played Sin and occasionally Potemkin, but never really learned much with either. It'll been fun to grind out some Xrd till SFV

the only people still playing ST are skilled enough to do that type of shit.

I feel like people that say ST is an honest fighting game only picture it as Ryu vs Ken or Ryu vs Sagat.

We got Vega
Balrog throw loops
Touch of death combos

Lots of bullshit in that game tbh

edit: looks like the Vega video was already linked lol

Anyone that's spent any amount of time playing ST knows that there's shenanigans for plenty of the cast. Balrog, ken and blanka throw loops and all that stuff. But shenanigans are a part of every fighting game. In ST, because of the small cast and the straightforward mechanics, you can quickly learn what to expect and then attempt to come up with a counter strategy, without having to worry about LOADS of meters and focus attacks and EX attacks or whatever.

Yeah, vega is a total prick in ST, but you know what to expect and can come up with a strategy or look one up. For example, if you are using deejay vs vega, jumping light punch stuffs loads of vega's air attacks (especially in ST as jumping jabs are active thru the entire jump arc). And standing in the corner and jumping vertically with lk stuffs vega too.

ST is great for fundamentals and getting into the habit of learning matchup specific stuff. Choices in a match have big consequences and you get thru loads of matches really quickly.

The only trouble with it is finding people to play that are of a similar skill level to you when you first start.

CB, did my feedback help?
I haven't played against another Zato since
What? It's not serious. I'm giving you shit. We are now Xrd rivals. :p

Ah, I thought it was, sorry for getting hostile :p. And yea, I have Rave to practice the I-No matchup so bring it

Here's a good replay

Not as fun uploading me doing well (even though I could've done more) than uploading myself getting washed. I can learn more from an L
sadly

That feeling when you get back on Killer Instinct and you're a KIller in Ranked matches but the rest of your stuff is locked,... wtf this is the 3rd time man.

Anyone wanna get destroyed in KI?

GGs Cindi, and Morris. I also played against a Sin player but i'm not sure who they are. Cindi, I feel that you need to work on your bnbs. You hit me a lot with Dash -> j.K but then nothing happened after so you missed out on a lot of damage. You also need to YRC your antidepressant Scale more. I airdashed over it a lot but if you YRC it, you can hit me out my airdash/punish me.

Sorry about the not so great connection. It started out fine but got more laggy as we played.

You were Sol right? If so then that Sin was me. GGs

When they jump from an almost full screen, for most characters there isn't much they can do other than air dash to close in on you, try preventing that by neutral or backward jumping and sticking out some normals. Not many characters can challenge Sin's normals during air to air.

Slayer is a bit hard to anti air while you're on the ground, has a lot of tools to miss up your AA timing. You have a better chance at shutting him off while you're in the air. Even though you won, he got a lot of clean jump-ins during the first round, which could have gone really bad for you if he was a better Slayer player.

The one piece of advice that I constantly give to new players is to always either know what your opponent is going to do, or be trying to figure it out. Those are the only two things you should ever be doing in a fighting game.

Once you know what someone is going to do, make sure you have an answer for it!!

GGs. I still have a lot of things to work on. There was so much flailing around. Neutral looked rough and my meaty gunflame yrc timings are super off.

It's awesome that you record these, really shows you what you need to work on.

The replays are saved in the game anyways. Rewatch every fight to find patterns and holes.

Work on using 5c and 6p to anti air, u let him get away with a lot of free IAD's with out making him earn it, make sure u can convert off both those buttons.

If u can't anti air ppl will get free offense all day

Anything I should know about Xrd frame data? What's fast and what's slow in this game?

As an example, I-No's 5D is 26 start up,12 active, 9 recovery, -7 frame advantage. This is obviously unsafe on whiff and would be punishable in any other fighting game.

But what about Chemical Love? 11 start up, 10 active, 13+8 recover, +3 frame advantage.

Chemical Love has a pretty fast start up in the game, so I'm going to assume that 11 frames for a move is pretty fast in GG? Even a 5P has a start up of 4 and a 5K with a 7. Comparing it to Chun Li, Chun Li's equivalent in terms of frames is her far MK and far MP. Chun Li's slowest normal is her far HK, which has a 12 frame start up. But here's Chemical Love, a fast special, that's one frame below that.

If this were Street Fighter, these moves would be pretty slow depending on the character.

Also DustLoop wiki has no information on On Block frame data. So while Chemical Love is +3, I don't know what disadvantage I have in terms of frames if it's blocked. Unless I'm missing something. I'm still pretty new to frame data so did I get all of this right?

It's pretty clear now that each game has different takes on frame data. What's slow in one game is fast in another game. Interesting. Especially when you consider that GG is way faster than SF but apparently has longer frames (better animation?).

What is an IAD?

The +3 is your frame advantage on block. IAD stands for instant air dash. It's when you air dash as soon as you jump of the ground.

I might be up to play some Xrd tomorrow. Got a very early Ramlethal. Still need a lot of practice before I can take on a decent player.
