The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Hehe, just for fun i did potemkins combo challenges one handed on stick. Got up to #18 before i quit :p have you guys and gals ever tried doing stuff like that one handed? :)

Awesome thread! I'm really looking forward to SFV, but I'm just about starting from square one with the genre -- the vast majority of my fighting game 'experience' comes from mashing buttons with friends back in the 90s.

Working on basic mechanics in USFIV (PC) now, so hopefully I can build some measure of competence by the time SFV launches. :D

I always think about taking a break, but other thoughts like "I don't wanna stop playing yet" or "I'll win the next match for sure" come up too. Recently I've made a rule for myself that if I lose 5 or more matches in a row I do end up taking a break and playing later though.
I do the same thing, but more around 10-15 rounds. Sometimes I know I'm fighting the cream of the crop (sometimes online and sometimes guys from tournament streams) and I stick with it, though.
Huh?

That's Tuesday.

What games have YOU been playing?
SG, VSav and 3S. Can't wait for SFV to get it's first six DLC characters and for Revelator to be on PC. Too bad UNIEL still doesn't have a PC port.

That 1.04 patch needs to come soon for xrd in EU. There's like only 10 ppl online to play in EU and they're all really good, i try to fight but i have no chance against them at all. :(

holy shit

I did the tutorial, then gave up. Nothing about the game grabbed me, except for the visuals.

I'd play it if anyone of my friends did though, remember having fun mashing buttons with them in previous versions.

It's funny how this "tutorial" is radically different from DOA5+ and DOA5:
+U:
LR's tutorial mode. I don't think they mention that "delay" at all in the tutorials. It's basically just "okay, these are the properties of the moves, now do this combo."

Yeah but delaying strings to bait out holds or whatever is kind of obvious. The whole game just takes the stagger and change the rhythm of your offense to the next level.

I should really get back into DOA, enjoyed the little time I had with it. Played it earlier this year (only a couple of online matches and finished the story mode) but I would like to get more familiar with 3D fighters as Tekken 7 will probably (hopefully?) come out this year.

Yeah, I went through that a while ago, and I remember not finding that very intuitive at all. At least it has a preview function so you can see the timing.

Playing Xrd I'm pretty impressed with all the tutorial/mission/challenges stuff. The majority of it is actually quite practical, in that it actually tries to give you the context of when and why you would do certain things, not just bascially throw a movelist at you and call it a day.

That's not the point. The point is: If you're going to explain the game to absolute beginners, you need to explain the game to absolutely beginners. No matter how "obvious" it may be.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but do you guys know how often they restock the MadCatz TE2? I have been watching it on Amazon for about a month and they have never had a restock of it. I ordered one tonight in hopes that they'll restock it and ship money in time for SFV.

Is anyone free to play Xrd right now? I'm willing to practice with Ky with a few match. (advice during the match will help a lot too)

lobby is called Digisportswarmup
PW is gaf

Some GG replays from tonight.

I keep thinking the game is SF and keep trying to do links with punch and I keep forgetting my combos.

Time to lay off matches for a while and stick to training. I've got the principles of spacing in GG down for the most part now I think, so I'm going to continue the GG tutorial series on YouTube. The next lesson is on defense, so I can't wait for that one because I need it. Haha.

Against a rando Venom. I did well here.

Player Matches are structural and more educational and learning intensive.

Ranked is like the wild west and more about adaptation in single bursts.

Depending on where you're trying to go skill wise one is gonna be better than the other but to be competent imo you're going to need both.

Not disagreeing with you just showing the merit of using both as a tool for different things instead of relying on one or the other.
That's actually an accurate way of describing it.
