The Final Bosman Show

Ugh the baseballs and the footage from 3DWorld might get me to finally hitting the amazon button to buy.

I'm trying to delay it for a long as possible.

He's the gaming world's version of Jon Stewart. We need him.

A bit premature, perhaps, but not a bad comparison. His criticism of Gears' "maturity" was definitely incisive, spot-on and hilarious in a Daily Show-esque way. It'll be interesting to see if he becomes prominent enough where important people in the video game industry actually pay attention to what he says in the same way politicians do with Jon.

Anyways, fantastic show for sure.

That Super Mario 3D World segment was an ice cold takedown of Jason Rubin's comments.

Paraphrasing: "Why would I spend $300 dollars to play one excellent game when I could spend $400 or $500 to play a bunch of regular games? It's economics!"

It makes a damn fine point and that is excluding the fact that the Wii U has other solid games and for the budget conscious or Nintendo first gamer would be a good purchase.

That was great, also CRIME!

Kyle Bosman is GameTrailers.

To me.

I don't know. There were many before him who are still doing a wonderful job- Spear, Bloodworth, Damiani, Stevens, and Beer. Their crew was pretty tight-knit, even after Shane left.

But Bosman adds something truly special to the site- every episode just keeps getting better. His enthusiasm is truly awesome- and the evolving jokes over the episodes are rad.

So goooood!

I disagree, Bossman seems genuine and has a very likable innocence that comes through very well. It's a strange mix of dryness and sincerity. Stewart just uses a sarcastic snark schtick over and over.

I don't think there are very many non-gaming versions of Bossman. That's a major compliment.

Having just finished Bioshock Infinite over the weekend, I got a good kick out of his description of the boss fight. So true. It makes little sense. But I really enjoyed the game (despite some story flaws) and he clearly has something against all Bioshocks. On the "I love last gen" videos, he mentions his "hate" for Bioshock 1.

It felt to me that everything it was trying to do with Lara's character was crushed by what Naughty Dog accomplished with Ellie. When you compare the deer stalking sequences in each game, for example, Tomb Raider's comes across as completely laughable. But Kyle's also right that the biggest problem is Croft was designed in the 90s and has always been a terrible Mary Sue. Nothing about her character makes sense. She's super-rich, and super athletic, and super hot and super intelligent, and she's an archaeologist/spy/socialite. When you compare her to Indiana Jones, well, he's a down on his luck college professor who gets the shit kicked out of him a lot. He's conflicted, but affable so we root for him in these impossible situations, while Lara just runs around killing species once thought extinct for fun. The reboot tries to modernize her, but there's just no there there to focus on.

She isn't even as interesting as Nathan Drake, who destroys everything about "normal" life around him and is incapable of keeping very good relations with people that don't accept him for his flaws (obsession, thrill seeking, etc). Granted most of this happens off screen and is merely implied in the Uncharted games, but it informs his relationships with Elena, Sully, and Chloe as the series progressed. The TR reboot to me mostly fell flat from a character standpoint. Everyone in it had exact cookie cutter character moments and arcs. Everything expected to happen, happened. As Kyle said, she isn't particularly interesting in the game. You don't really feel for her survival struggle at all. And yes, TLOU totally overshadowed TR's attempt at portraying survival. The platforming/exploration as what made Tomb Raider fun to me. I'd have been fine with it being a lighthearted exploration game ala the previous titles.

This part was hilarious.

If you haven't yet, look up Stewart's interview with the boys from the now-cancelled show Crossfire, where he sincerely calls out their pandering to their face. It's believed he made them look so bad that this episode was directly responsible for the cancellation. In his recent debate with Bill Oreilly you also saw a man who is genuinely smart and eloquent, in addition to being funny. There are good reasons beyond the sarcasm he's grown to be so respected. But I digress. I'd say Kyle is like label in similar ways and certainly comes off as smart and sincere, but like I said before, it's still premature.

I agree. He's really different than most other jokey trying to be funny shows because he does it from a place of enjoyment, positivity, and glee as opposed to the more common sarcasm and complaining a lot of other stuff has taken on. Even when he complains it's not an angry complaint it's more of a please don't do this, make better decisions

Stewart gets real quite often, especially in his non-Daily Show appearances.

Well, they both like to do funny voices and weirdo physical bits, but unlike Stewart, Bosman is actually really good at it haha. So that makes him more Colbert-ish in my head.

Tomb Raider was and is a great game if you like videogames. The whole story bickering is far too overrated, it's a damn fun game with fun gameplay, a story that's fun and an open world that's fun to uncover. I have absolutely no idea why everyone jumps on the ludonarratic train, it's like people WANT something to be bad.

If you didn't play it, check it out. It's probably my GOTY 2013.

The ghost fight joke.... The comeback to Jason Rubin's dumb ass comment... The gears of war maturity joke.... This is the best episode since the first. Kyle is the best and he's right, If last of us doesn't win, they don't know what game of the year means

Bosman needs to do an entire show about the unfounded cynicism in the industry and how it will eventually kill off the very thing we love.

Did I just finish reading through the VGX/Joel McHale thread? Maybe... I'm just not sure why so many people desire to muddle about in a pit of despair when it comes to entertainment. I guess I would be willing to take unhealthy amounts of pure PR over obnoxious cynicism any day of the week.

I haven't read that thread, but the VGX sucked precisely because of McHale's attitude. He was snarky the whole time, like he was being hold there against his will. (And don't blame his attitude on the shitty writing - the guy was on season 4 of Community).

For me, VGX was saved BECAUSE of him. The show was weak in terms of content/reveals for 3 hours, and Geoff as usual just parroting the PR stuff/overhyping. I had already predicted what Joel was going to do as soon as he was announced as the co-host. But yeah, that type of attitude/humor just isn't for everybody so I'm not going to say you're in the wrong or anything. Perfectly reasonable.

Oh boy, hope Geoff knows what he's getting into. The show better be put together decently, otherwise Joel WILL go off teleprompter and start roasting the show. Loved that Ubisoft press conference.

I've been thinking the whole time about how Kyle Bosman would do as a co-host to Geoff or even the sole host of the VGA's. Dude could make some hilarious mini segments to break up between the awards and trailers, but I don't know how well he'd do in front of the camera live since he seemed really nervous during his E3 bit. Still did really well though.

Idk Bosman, would you take the job? :)

Co-hosting live? nah. I'd be all for it if the show was pre-recorded and Kyle was allowed to script and shoot everything ahead of time. Would be great.

Honestly, really don't see why this show needs to be live, especially in this format.

I honestly can't wait to hear what Bosman has to say about the VGX awards, though I'm not sure how much he'll have to hold his tongue since he's employed by GameTrailers.

they try to seperate GT and the VGAs, that's why no one from GT is on that advisory panel. Kyle won't hold anything back, and I'm really looking forward to it :D

I'm pretty sure that GT management doesn't want Bosman spending a lot of time slagging off the event they've spent the last month promoting. The VGX production might have been handled by different staff but there's still kind of a vested interest there.

That's not to say that there won't be some "safe" complaints about certain things (GTA5 GOTY).....I just don't expect him to rip into the actual quality of the production or hosting. We shall see though.

I was surprised at his comments on twitter about the VGX - he was being honest, and his displeasure was apparent.

Wow... I didn't realize the VGX event was THAT bad. I didn't watch it... but based on the reactions and opinions thus far... I should be glad I didn't watch it!

Any takers on .giffing Kyle's "emote of the VGX"? 'Cause that is some classic acting right there.

Yeah, holy goodness WE NEED THAT! Utter perfection!

I liked this week's episode- I think he summed up a lot of our feelings on the VGX in many ways. I don't know how I feel about that Destiny trailer- I didn't think it was "soggy" or rushed out, but he's right in declaring that it did lack some "wow" factor. But no mention of The Witcher 3!? That was jaw-dropping enough in itself to carry me through the show, along with No Man's Sky.

And he's nailed it regarding Reggie. I wonder if Reggie is that oblivious- that of all the possible wonderful things Nintendo could present, the surprise is actually no surprise at all. CRANKY. What in the fuck were they thinking?! His bit at the end, "we could show Metroid..." GAH! Infuriating really- they totally missed the mark, and Bosman calling him out for maybe an interview could be nice. A little sit down to try to understand what direction they're going with for reveals. I mean, if they don't come to E3 again, their Direct has to be the most wonderful thing ever. Bosman's mentions of the past wow moments of games like Dark Souls 2, and MGR, juxtaposed with Cranky made me feel even worse.

I think him harboring on the wonderful ideas of indie games is also something that keeps coming up of late- the most innovative ideas, the willingness to explore and develop based on new gameplay mechanics- they're driving the industry forward. I wish Bosman discussed more about what we could do with hosting, but creating an awards show for "people" is definitely a step in the right direction.

YEAAAAAH! Every Wednesday, good sir Bosman brings the feel good truth.
