It's funny how we had loads of people complaining about not having a 3D release in the previous Blu-ray thread.

I'm happy as hell it's coming. I just bought it on iTunes to watch until the 3D Bluray came out.

I was waiting for this. Didn't buy the previous as I heard they were doing this later in the year, so just like lotr and hobbit films I skipped the first release.

Yep, I'm in. Borrowed my sister's Blu-ray initially to have viewings in my home theater for friends and family, but waited on the 3D version for my own purchase. 3D is glorious on my plasma.

I just bought the Hobbit 3D Extended Edition Trilogy from Amazon UK for less than $50 a few weeks ago. Nice to have that one in my collection as well.

Just having a Star Wars movie at home in 3D feels kind of exciting to me.

I'd also enjoy the OT in 3D but uh.... Special editions nope :(

Will the commentary be on the included 2D Blu-ray or will that be the original version released and only the 3D Blu-ray has it?

Can't wait in five months for the 4K version...
Can't wait in one year for the special 4K 3D Edition with new content...
Can't wait in two years for the special bundle edition of SW7 and SW8 with new deleted scenes...

I just wish iTunes or Amazon let you stream 3D movies. I'd be so all over that.

get rekt SW. the franchise now sucks.

Vudu does, but 3D isn't included with most digital copy codes that come with Blu-ray 3D movies.
I have around 100 Blu-ray 3D discs and I think only Resident Evil: Retribution had streaming 3D included. You can double dip, but I haven't.

God damn it son of a bitch now they do a fucking commentary track (((

Can I watch this if I don't have a 3D TV?

If it's on the 3D disc then no. It's possible to give a 2D option on the 3D disc, but Disney doesn't do it, ever.

seriously. after they capped
solo
the franchise is dead to me.

Best part of the movie.
They finally gave him a worthy sendoff. He had like no arc in ROTJ and this was the best thing they could have did with him and it was emotionally resonate with the story
. But OK.

Fuck it, I'm just going to wait for the Trilogy 4K ultimate edition I'm done with this BS. Hell maybe waiting for all 9 movies in 4K wouldn't be too bad.

jj abrams is like rust. everything he touches turns to shit.

Ford wanted Solo to die years ago. He probably wouldn't have agree to do another two films.

Not like a third trilogy should be focusing on the old characters anyway.

IIRC commentaries on 3D editions are usually on the 2D disc, unless they are including the exact same disc as the earlier release, I'd say it will be on the 2D disc.

This should have happened in RotJ, though something tells me even if didn't happen you would find something else to bitch about.

Why did he need a send off in this movie, though? I suppose he was meant to be the Obi-wan mentor figure in this one but he really was not a mentor at all. If he had to be in this movie and had to play a mentor-type role then they should have better developed his relationship with Rey. He could have been the father she never had and she could have been the daughter to replace his son. He should have hired her to work the falcon and died on j the next movie after better establishing their relationship.

IMO his death scene was more about setting up Kylo Ren's state of mind for the next 2 films. You could see he was struggling with the light side earlier, and he finally went over the edge. I think it makes him a much more interesting character going forward.

Would this edition contain all the previous content PLUS additional stuff? Or do I need to buy the first release as well to get the older extra material?

Yes:

Along with the theatrical release and audio commentary, which wasn’t part of the original Blu-ray debut, the new set will also feature the “classic bonus features” from the discs released last spring.

Thought I would resurrect this thread with the review from Bluray.com

It's a shame Disney didn't release this right off the bat, but double dipping profits and all that. Regardless, without a UHD presentation on the market (which one would think is bound to come sooner or later), this is, by far, the definitive version The Force Awakens. The 3D video is fantastic; fans of the film, the Star Wars universe, or 3D in general owe it to themselves to experience it. The added supplements -- including the wonderful commentary track -- and attractive packaging make this one of the year's best releases, if not the best, and it earns my highest recommendation.

My copy arrived yesterday and the packaging is really nice.

Anyone else double dipping?

Did they add any more deleted scenes?

Yes

NEW! Deleted Scenes (1080p): In addition to the previously released deleted scenes (Finn and the Villager, Jakku Message, X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed, Kylo Searches The Falcon, Snow Speeder Chase, and Finn Will Be Fine), the following have been included for this release: Leia & The Resistance (0:17), Unkar Plutt at Maz's Castle (0:50), and Tunnel Standoff (1:00).

I can confirm that the commentary is only on the 2D disc.

Good! I have no interest in 3D, basically just the commentary track and beautiful box art :p

Ordered now, will have it tomorrow :)

Also - I find it kinda weird that they only had it on the 2D disc... Like, is the 3D effect to big on a bluray disc so another audio track couldn't fit?

No it would easily fit if they wanted it to. As I said earlier in the thread, this is normal for all the studios. If there is a 2D and 3D disc, the commentary is almost always on the 2D disc. I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense, as that is considered the premium disc, I can't say it has ever bothered me.

I have just finished watching the 3D Blu-ray, and FWIW it was noticeably better than the cinema 3D presentation that I seen (which was in a fairly good theatre).

This isn't surprising to me as I have always thought 3D blu-ray was superior.

Home 3D has always been superior. That's why I would hate to see it disappear as an option.
