Picked up my copy today. Beautiful packaging, and I'm looking forward to finaly see this in 3D (I saw it first when I was on a business trip in Japan during release, in a theater without 3D. Second time I went with some friends who don't like 3D).

Bit disapointed in the extra deleted scenes. Just three short ones (allthough the Unkar Plutt and Tunnel ones are pretty fun), without any context how they would actually fit. The tunnel one even seems to be cut of abruptly. I had hoped to finally see some deleted stuff like Constable Zuvoo and the likes.

Home 3D has always been superior. That's why I would hate to see it disappear as an option.

People keep saying that the format is dead, yet every major release still gets a 3D blu ray. It's found it's niche, so hopefully it's secure for a while.

I mentioned it earlier, but yea it really is nice, photo's don't do it justice. I'll be gutted if they don't release the rest like this. A series of them would look nice on my shelf.

They keep releasing the blu rays, but it's hard to find new tv's with 3D functionality. Most tv-producers have dropped it entirely. Shame really, because 4K must be a perfect fit for passive 3D (which works incredible).

I am quietly starting to lookiinto getting a 4K tv, and I want 3D with it, but it's so hard to find these days and I fear once I will buy my tv, I won't have 3D options any more.

f.

Yeah, 3D in theater isn't going away for several reasons. Home video 3D is a bit of a concern due to the cost of 4k/Blu Ray 3D sets but hopefully those will come down.

We really need to see 3D streaming for digital releases. Why isn't this a thing? Also, more 4k+3D Blu Ray bundles at retail. The latest Ghostbusters film did it. Same with Angry Birds.

Actually this is kind of getting on my nerves as I don't go to the cinema (The only time in the last decade was TFA), so I buy everything I am interested in on Blu-ray. I'll be getting X-Men, Suicide Squad, Star Trek and Independence Day in the month. For each one of these I have to choose either 3D or 4K, which is really annoying as I have no idea which presentation I'll prefer.

I thought it was just Samsung and/or LG that dropped it. I usually buy Sony TV's and they are still supporting it thankfully.

What about getting a projector that does 3D?

Will they include all the bonus features available on this release on the trilogy release? I'm really interested in the commentary for once. Then again, this is the third release that has all the expected features and there's never only one trilogy release...

How are you all getting copies already isn't this out on 11/15?

I'm in Ireland, it came out yesterday here. Also we only have 12 months in a year here
:)

Going by past releases I'd say no. The Blu-ray saga release was missing some pretty significant documentaries from the various DVD releases. Tbh it's light on extra features (commentary aside) so you wouldn't be missing much anyway. The commentary will almost certainly come as standard on all future versions of TFA though (again, going by past re-releases).

What about getting a projector that does 3D?

I can't speak for the person you are quoting, but a good panel is vastly superior to a similarly-priced projector in my opinion.

Why would they release it in Europe first? Damn you Disney!!!!!

Trump wouldn't have let this happen!

It makes a change from when we had to wait months after the US for major films and games to be released over here.

It's made buying physical a bit of a problem for me. I want to grab Star trek this week but I would love to have both the 3D Blu-Ray and the 4k version. I ended up leaving and buying neither. I will wait for a price drop on both.

I read the reviews for Star Trek and it seems the 3D version is the one to go for. X-men is supposed to be demo-worthy in 4K and 3D, but only the 4K version has an Atmos soundtrack. Much like BvS, Suicide Squad's extended edition isn't being released in 3D so I'll go 4K there as well.

Seems to be a good way of picking between the two. If Sony continues to do the 3D/4K combos is hope other studios follow. There was an Amazon exclusive version of Star Trek released with both 4K and 3D packed in. But you had to buy it with a model of the Franklin. That drove up the price.

I was considering it, but you would be nearly just as well buying both versions separately.

Can't wait for the ultimate 3D edition that features ATMOS... and then another when they decide to jump into 4K...

Ya, I'm in the same boat. I can't decide which version to give up. I tend to let the 4K version go since I'm not 4K ready but it would be nice to future proof myself, while on the other hand I have a decent 3D projector so watching 3D movies on a big screen is nice.

I'm going with the 3D version having based my decision on the following reviews from Blu-ray.com:

UHD

Star Trek Beyond beams onto UHD with a 2160p/HDR-enhanced transfer. Once again, "subtle" is the word of a UHD review. The film was reportedly primarily photographed at 3.4K and finished at 2K, making this an upscale-to-4K release. It's still a good little improvement over the 1080p Blu-ray. Textures are noticeably firmer, even before making a direct A-to-B comparison. Facial details are upped to the point that smaller complexities even at medium distance are finer and sharper. By comparison, the matching faces on the Blu-ray can look almost smeary. Textural details on uniforms are terrific, too, whether the jackets some of the crew wear on the planet surface or even the relatively boring starship tops they wear on the Enterprise. The difference is evident whether on the clean and bright-white Enterprise, in brightly lit locales on the planet surface, in darker recesses and low light interiors, or the slick Yorktown star base. Colors are gorgeous, with the blue crew shirts the true standout. Scenes featuring Spock and McCoy on the planet are amongst the finest in the movie; they're often bathed in natural light and the shirts look fantastic with the punchy blue making a big impact. The color is a bit more refined and nuanced on the UHD, but again not by any serious leaps and bounds. The image on the whole presents with a little darker contrast, too, but never to the point of devouring a scene. Black levels are fairly good, perhaps a bit too bright and gray where they should be deep and detailed. Flesh tones appear flusher and more natural. Here, the HDR color palette definitely falls into the "refinement" category rather than the "alteration" category. This isn't a knockout UHD, and those who only watch the Blu-ray aren't missing out on a major boost, but UHD owners will appreciate the finer point upgrades it has on offer.

3D:

Star Trek Beyond takes full advantage of the 3D landscape. The movie is filled with environments and effects shots that offer a grand sense of shape and depth. The Enterprise practically appears to be floating in space. Even in twisty camera shots, her spacial place in the frame is made very clear, helped by a tangible feel of the curvature to her saucer section, main hull, and nacelles. Her approach toward, and into, Yorktown is a true "wow" moment for the 3D format. Shapely interiors throughout the Enterprise look and feel enticingly real. The rounded turbolift doors and the smooth, curved consoles throughout the bridge are appreciably voluminous. Lengthy corridors seem to stretch well back into the screen. Natural environments on the planet surface reveal plenty of area stretch as well, giving an already expansive world and distance shots a much greater sense of space and realism. On the flip side, in comparison to the film's 2D-only presentation, details remain sharp and clear and complex, but colors take a decided turn for the darker. Aliasing is prominent throughout, not to a point of distraction but it's very noticeable when it creeps into the frame. Still, the pluses outweigh the minuses in a visually arresting 3D presentation.

Thankfully they both feature Atmos.

Samsung LG and Sony all still make 3d TV's as of 2016 luckily. The LG 3d OLED models in particular seem especially nice.

Excited to pick this up for home viewing! The 3d was pretty well done in the theatrical release I thought.

Sign up or shop elsewhere.

Well yeah, that's basically it, isn't it? I live in a country where I can't use the 2 day free shipping, nor do I have access to the media content. The service should be able to speak for itself without resorting to this strategy IMO, and I'm sure said strategy isn't to drive me to shop elsewhere.

Is there an Amazon Prime free trial you could try maybe?

I wonder if we can wish really hard and get ourselves a Member Berry commentary track. It would probably get old after 10 minutes but I would still listen to the whole thing.

One of the new deleted scenes includes a scene with leia and explains the state of the republic in 10 seconds. Carrie acting was pretty good in it as well, wondering why they deleted it.

I'll only pick this up if/when I can get it for under £10. I'd have paid full price if the 3D version had been available when the regular Blu-Ray came out, but sod off am I paying another £20 when I've already paid out £15.

I was also pretty pissed at the time, although at least they had the decency to tell us that the 3D version was coming later in the year.

I wanted to get this as I hadnt bought the initial release but forgot that it had released here and saw it at a store (Australia). But man it was like 50$. I cant swing that way for a single movie but I was really tempted. Gonna have to wait for a price drop.
