I'm all for putting more decision making in the hands of drivers instead of their pits, but at some point telling a driver about track conditions is more about safety than performance.

It shouldn't. This is F1, you can expect drivers to be able to feel out the track at least.

This rule is mostly to put a bit of a stop to engineers deciding how a driver should drive and put a bit of emphasis back on driver skill. And I guess it's working.

Great to see progress by McLaren and Honda in these conditions. Last year, no matter if on inters or wets, they were some 3 seconds slower than the fastest times, so to reduce that gap by 2 seconds is good. They still probably suck in dry conditions though

They'll be even closer in the dry, they are just having issues putting all that horsepower down in the conditions.

Not sure I see how Q3 will be much different? Drivers will have tires for about two optimal laps. I guess the difference is that the drivers won't have time to pit and go again if they botch the first run.

The field looks pretty exciting. Will be some hard fought battles outside the podium. Mercedes looks very confident unfortunately.

Hm, I was hoping the first two practice sessions would at the very least allude to the potential battle between Mercedes and Ferrari, but with P1 partially in the wet and P2 showing the Ponies holding back a bit, the only thing I've been able to gather thus far is yup, Mercedes is still fast.

Still good to see the cars back out on the track though. Good noise too.

Charlie Whiting explained today that at the start of Q1 the drivers will be listed on the screens in the order of FP3 times.
Then as drivers set times they have the potential to move up, ie those who have not set a time yet will be at the bottom in FP3 order
This system provides a 'tie-break' of sorts if a red flag interrupts things and several drivers have not yet done flying laps

Charlie Whiting reminds us that drivers can still say anything on the radio: "You’ll still get what I would call the juicy content."
"If someone has done something silly on track, the driver can call him an idiot and all that sort of stuff."

It sounds like it might be a good idea to set a quick time in FP3 if you're a backmarker.

Mercedes has mixed up the crews of mechanics and engineers working on the German team's two sides of the garage. Bild newspaper claims it is a ploy to bring better harmony to the silver ranks, as the fierce rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg threatens to spill into and infect the spirit of the double world champion team.

The report revealed that, ahead of the Melbourne season opener, Mercedes took the 15-man crews working for Hamilton and Rosberg respectively and switched some of them to the opposite side of the garage. Rosberg apparently backs the move. "The rivalry between me and Lewis is not just about us drivers," he said. "It can get to the point where it is too much. That's why this is a good idea." (GMM)
