"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

"HDR in the original Half-Life 2 (PC) - There was nothing concrete stated about the possibility of seeing the old Half-Life 2 maps updated with HDR effects. However, it could just be a “matter of time” before the maps are released for the PC version. Due to the programming similarities between the PC and 360 versions, it would actually be relatively easy to bring the 360’s HDR maps to the PC environment."

That kinda blows. Knowing Valve, it could take a year before the PC version is updated. I guess I'll just get Episode 2 then. TF2 looks awesome but I don't play MP games that much. Do you know if the 360 version will be running at 60fps? I might rent it or pick it up with the upcoming Toys R'us sale just to check out the upgraded HL2 original.

The console versions of the Orange Box run at 30fps.

Orange Box will be available to Steam users hours before Xbox users.

Not if you can get your hands on a XBox-copy early, which was the whole point of the discussion. Or am I missing something here?

It isn't shipping until the 9th. You can't get your hands on something early that isn't there. The steam version unlocks midnight.

That's ultra lame. Hl2 was running 60fps at much higher resolutions than 720p on 3yr old PC hardware. So much for groundbreaking consoles.

They implemented some kind of motion-blur while turning to hide that... don't know how well it works, though.

Motion blur actually induces a pretty big performance hit. I don't know why so many here think that it's implemented when a developer can only get 30fps. On the Jericho demo for the PC, setting motion blur on just low decreases the framerate by 15fps. As cool as motion blur looks, I'll rather have 60fps w/no motion blur.

It's not surprising at all. Apparently, "locked 30fps" is the new 60fps.

I never buy the 'locked 30fps' statement. If it even drops to 29 I will notice and it annoys the shit out of me.

Why exactly are you buying it on 360 then?

I may just wait until Steam releases a package that just includes the new games...I just hope I'm not waiting for very long.

My logic was that if I were to re-buy all of the games, I might as well do it where the gfx are upgraded and on a separate platform so it sort of feels like I have two distinct copies.

Those upgraded system specs scare me.

I have a X800 and 1 gig ram, but my processor is only 2GHZ. HL2 Episode 1 barely ran well enough with lower specs.

I bought the 360 version. Bit worried about the control but oh well. :/

I was worried about being able to run Episode 2, but seeing that TF2 runs perfectly fine running at 1440x900 with high settings means I have no worries about Episode 2

What is your hardware stats.

I bought a macbook pro for this. Bring it on. Slight bummer: Steam keeps telling me that I can't buy it from the country I am connecting from...

Those recommended specs are exactly my computer settings. Whew, glad i don't have to upgrade just yet!

I have a question, does valve typically do demos? I ask because even though I plan to buy this on 360, I thought a demo that shows all every aspect of the game would help sell it very well. I don't want the game to fail :p

No.

Why does the source engine have seriously low system requirements? It could run on anything. I guess it must be doing some things alot more efficiently than other recent games.

well the first game to use the source engine came out in 2004, and even back then it was a very scalable engine. it's something valve thinks is important, and it's a great idea.

the thing is TF2 isn't as taxing as HL2 from what I noticed. I can run TF2 on higher settings then I can Lost Coast.

the Source 2007 engine is very scalable and stable. its made to work on the shittiest of computers and looking ok to the most high end of systems and looking like the shit. You'll notice Episode 2 will most likely be able to run better than you did on HL2 / Episode 1 or Lost Coast.

Wow, totally forgot about peggle extreme coming with this package. To my delight, as I pre-ordered to save the 5%, I encountered my long lost addiction, Peggle (of the hl flavor) : )

nice... if thats the case I love valve even more now:D

It's kinda dissapointing considering that HL2 should've run easily at 720p and 60fps even with all the new effects (HDR, shaders)...at least they added motion blur.

I'm still concerned about the controls of the console versions though (the controls on the XBOX version were really clunky), hopefully the controls will be smooth.

CSNation has a new writeup on Portal from their recent Valve visit.

Particularly of note.

An interesting set of bonus features are primed to be included with Portal. Beyond the levels of the story, Portal will offer users the ability to play a set of “Advanced Chambers" and "Time Challenge" maps. I hadn’t had much time to look at these maps, but beyond the lengthy primary game, these additional modes are sure to offer up hours of additional entertainment as you try to beat your previous best.

User created content might end up being the biggest draw for extending the length of playtime in Portal, and the Portal team is trying to make the process of installing new maps as painless as possible. Sorry, there is not going to be a means to download user created content through Steam, at least not yet (this is still a goal of Valve, but we may not see anything on this until 2008).

Instead, players will manually have to download their new maps. The SDK will package everything into one, easily distributable file. The user can place this file in any location on their hard drive after being downloaded. From the main interface inside of Portal, the player will be able to browse to the download location and find the file. Their new system will automatically move the files to the appropriate location and add an easily viewable shortcut to the user created content within the Portal menu.

This is very different from having to manually place the downloaded file into an appropriate folder and then having to use the console to load the map. Now, all user created maps will be available as if you were selecting a chapter to jump to in the main story (such as in Half-Life 2 and Episode 1). The only title I know that will have this is Portal, but I can certainly see this as becoming the norm in other titles such as Team Fortress 2. Only time will tell.

Have any of you played Knytt Stories? This is essentially the same sort of system they use for custom maps. It's a very intuitive and easy way to do things.

Game is going thrive on user shit!

That user created Portals content is going to rule. I'm going to get myself in on that as soon as I have some free time.

I have a lot of bills and one traffic ticket to pay for with this pay check but if not with this one, then my next Orange Box will be MINE! Can't wait. The perfect game coupled with Halo 3 to take up the little free time I have between being a full time college student, working 30 hours a week, and setting up my future.

You can make your own Portal maps?

FUCK YEAH!

SO FUCKING HYPED.

Oh damn, I never realised they'll have developer commentary for Portal. Seriously, devs need to ape that concept so bad. I love listening to it.
