"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Motion blur actually induces a pretty big performance hit. I don't know why so many here think that it's implemented when a developer can only get 30fps. On the Jericho demo for the PC, setting motion blur on just low decreases the framerate by 15fps. As cool as motion blur looks, I'll rather have 60fps w/no motion blur.
YES, EXACTLY.

People pretend as if next-gen motion blur is some cheap effect used in place of a lower framerate, but in reality, it's a very demanding effect. With the few PC games that have offered it, the performance hit is usually pretty significant.

Not with deferred rendering ;)
More developers should base their engines upon it.

The motion blur is a really amazing effect in TF2, it adds a subtle but extremely effective visual element. It just makes everything feel so much more active and fluid and real. I love it.

Was playing TF2 late last night and wound up thinking "those poor console fucks, their experience is going to be so gimped compared to this awesomeness". I suspect a lot of 360/PS3 owners will be in here soon to bitch about TF2 and how they're gonna go back to Halo 3.

I think they'll be complaining how Scout is unplayable.

So.... anyone knows when can we preload? It's almost D-Day.
You can do it already actually since maybe last thursday I think.

List the reasons why you think this is.

That user created Portals content is going to rule. I'm going to get myself in on that as soon as I have some free time.
I look forward to the maps generated by the GAF collective. I may have to give this stuff a shot.

Just read the "which version to get" thread, you'll find them all laid out there. But the primary one is gimped slow-as-molasses gamepad control. It's just going to be a severely inferior play experience on console compared to the precision and speed of the PC game.

But, if everyone is on the same playing field - I'm not sure why this would be a complaint.

Are you suggesting Halo has better controls on the console than TF2 does on the console?

Well that's like suggesting that playing soccer with both legs tied together should be no less fun because, hey, at least everyone is on the same playing field.

I don't know, my guess would be maybe it does because Halo is built ground-up for the 360's control limitations while with TF2 it's being ported down from the superior playscheme for which it was designed in order to fit with an inferior one.

My point was, I don't think they are going to notice the difference since most will be ignorant of how it plays on the PC.

Motion blur is definitely a great-looking effect - look at Lost Planet, Halo 3, DiRT, The Darkness, Gears Of War, PGR3 are some beautiful examples, it makes everything look so smooth and realistic - it's definitely not 60fps good but it's so much better than 30fps without motion blur..who knows maybe we'll see a title later this gen running at 60fps with motion blur.

For example if I have one complain about Bioshock's visuals is the lack of motion blur, it would've made the game even more beautiful.

But you'll probably notice how some classes move or control like crap.

WTF? My Steam only allows me to purchase Episode 2 in the following packges: Orange Box, Premire Pack and Valve Complete Pack :(

I'm not sure if anyone has said they yet, BUT (great way to start a post)

Your image in the OP is from Half Life 2: The Lost Coast, not Half Life 2

just nit-picking i guess.

Is there a thread up for giving away Half Life 2 / Episode 1 cd keys? If not, lets make one!

Ohh, I misunderstood you. Sorry. I have no idea.

Quellex was right. This is a mess, heh.

There is a thread, yes.

"Have you guys played it on the console and have some sort of reference to go on?"

They've probably played it on PC and have used a gamepad at least once. Pretty much all the reference you need.

Mainly media comments, or some PC players who tried playing it with a game pad or simply playing with a Scout which I can't see how they'll make it work well in consoles since he's way too fast.

I would bet Valve tweaked the inputs for the consoles. At this point, it's just guessing that certain classes will control like crap. I'll wait and see.

I would also assume the sensitivity could be adjusted while playing on the console.

It's really not a matter of tweaking inputs, it's sorta how the game's designed.

I'll be getting the 360 version. Main reason being is I'm not a pc gamer anymore. I used to buy a new pc every 2 years or so, but now I just log onto my office desktop remotely and work from home. My $380 Dell more than does the trick for that.

I have not played any of HL2 yet and getting all that value in one box moved it way up on my radar. I want to try and use the TRU deal on it, but if not, I'll just get it at Fry's for 49.99. I think there will be enough people buying it on 360 to get some games in on TF2 as well.

On another note, when is the embargo on reviews for Orange Box up? I'd like to see some impressions of the console versions although Ryan's (1upshow) comments were enough for me.

Apparently one of the guys on the GFW podcast commented that the 360 version felt like shit, I believe "slow as molasses" was the term used.

I came in to ask this same question. How can I get this (I only really want Portal) without buying a game I've already bought? Episode 1 was $20, I'm not paying $45 for Episode 2.

Valve's site says "You can give away Half-Life 2 after you buy it from us again!"

http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=package&SubId=469&cc=US

I'd rather just not buy it again. What happened to the originally announced Episode 2 box for $20? Is it delayed, cancelled, or retailer-only?

Weird, not one of the Half-Life 2 products is available separately trough the Steam sites. It's always in some package in some cases cheaper though.

Interesting. Well, I will find out for myself this coming Wednesday.

I've played the game on both platforms (obviously a load more on PC). As a TFC clan player, I definitely wasn't into playing TF2 on a pad. The button config and analog set up is as good as it gets, but when it comes to spastic Scout hopping, sniping, etc. it gets a bit iffy. Pyros, HWs, Engies, Spies (provided you dont use your magnum as often as I do), and Medics won't suffer much at all. If you're not into PC FPS and play only consoles it won't matter much to you at all. Scouts are a twitch class on either platform.

well i finally got what i wanted on saturday, went to a local pc shop and they were selling a few ati black box vouchers out of 2900 gfx card boxes for £18, why their not selling the 3 game package on steam is beyond me, but anyway im happy now that i have what i wanted and wasn't forced into buying 2 games twice.

Well if you have the PC version of HL2 then you can download lost coast for free so it's practically part of it.

I will try to make some awesome maps, since I have been mapping for a while now.

Who here still needs to finish episode 1? I got sidetracked a while ago and am only getting around to it now. Pre-loading hl2: e2 and portal is a pretty solid feeling, I cannot wait until launch day; especially to try out portal for the first time.

I totally 100% agree with you, but since my main computer is a Mac and my PC is slow... I have to go with the gimped 360 version :/

TF2 ain't Halo, my man. Halo's got the power and the juice on 360, HL2, TF2, CS etc. does not.

I can guarantee that TF2 will move more copies on the PC than on 360, easily 100% more. The PS3 fanbase will be even smaller, minuscule even.

So the ignorant ones (the smallest minority of TF2 community) will be the console owners, not the other way around.
