"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Looks like I will be headed to Circuit City on Tuesday to pick this up for $37.99.

One question: Will I be able to play as soon as I install it or will I have to wait until it officially comes out on the 10th?

You're gonna have to download files from Steam, so yeah, you'll have to wait until it's officially unlocked.

This ships on the 9th, right? If it doesn't show up in most stores until the 10th than having it on Steam first will be an advantage.

This is already in pole position for my personal GOTY based purely on TF2 alone. Most multiplayer fun I've had since... well, since the original Team Fortress.

I'm definitely curious to see how the console versions play. Once you've seen the incredible speed and accuracy at which skilled players turn and spin and juke and fire in TF2 on the PC it's impossible to imagine that same level of finesse in the console versions; I think it's going to play like a very different game.

Definitely. I really haven't had so much fun in ages. And I'm still hearing new voice clips. When I beat down a Heavy the first time with a Scout bat, my dude calling him a fatty had me laughing out loud. And "I broke your stupid crap", hilarious. :lol

Circuit City is only having the PC version for Tuesday(360 on wednesday), I haven't seen any other stores have it for Tuesday except maybe Fry's.

Even if they have it on tuesday.. its useless. As it won't allow you to play until unlock at midnight 12am pdt wednesday morning.

Details?

I was just guessing, since it worked that way with Half-Life 2 and Episode One.

The Xbox version doesn't use steam.. so there's no real way to lock the product. There just won't be any servers online to play MP until wednesday. Thats why the product has a 10/10 release date.

I think you misread my posts. :Þ

Pre-ordered mine today, wasn't planning on buying this but hard to pass up 5 games in 1 plust all the Half-life hype. Quick question. how long is HL1? I've never played any of them so I'll have to start from the beginning.

I think my first playthrough was 10-15 hours.

Did it? That's fucking retarded. I guess that's why they say "Shipped to stores".

I guess we can all join up in the GAF chatroom and wait for that shit to unlock. Kinda like TF2 madness.

Anyhow!

Portal footage!

Please place the weighted storage cube on the 15 hundred megabot aperture science heavy duty super colliding super button. Haha.

10 hours maybe? I know the fastest speedrun clocks around 2 hours if that means anything.

Too bad I have a mid term on Wednesday :(

Thanks for the quick response. How does HL1 stack up with HL2, I always here people praise HL2 but don't here so much about the original.

Considering it comes out on the 10th yet its available on steam at 12am on the 10th I think I win.

In some aspects like enemy AI HL1 is better. Simply because it has probably THE best AI for a enemy unit. You'll know them when you see them.

I see why I got confused, I thought it came out on the 9th for retail.

Current ETA (given by VALVe) for Episode Two's release for retail:

OCTOBER 10TH, 2007 - United States Retail (Unlocks Worldwide on Steam at 12:01AM PST -8GMT)
OCTOBER 12TH, 2007 - Retail Europe

This weekend was the Halo weekend for me. I finished the PC version of Halo 1 on Friday, the PC version of Halo 2 yesterday, and Halo 3 today.

Now I'm itching for some Half-Life. I have them all registered on Steam, for years, as applicable, but none currently installed. If I have Steam download and install Half-Life 1 (not Source), Opposing Force, and Blue Shift, will it automatically apply the High Definition Pack included with Blue Shift to Half-Life 1 and Opposing Force as well?

That looks... confusing.

Steam is fucking pissing me off.

Trying to pre load the orange box. I'm on a 2mb connection. Just trying to download episode 2 at the mo and the speed starts at around 115kbs put then drops to under 1kbs(wtf) within 30 seconds(wtf). Now, if I download Portal it holds at ~115k indefinately. While Portal is downloading, if I resume ep2 then they both go at around 55kbs. But if I then pause Portal to just concentrate on ep2 after 30 seconds its back down to like 800bytes/s. Tried restarting steam and that delete steam clientregistry.blob 'trick'.

What. The. Fuck.

Just... let it download. It's not like you can play them before Wednesday.

Even if he let it download, it wouldn't finish before Wednsday going 1KB a second.

Citizen, your best bet is to check out the Steam forums.

Mmmmm?

I predict a week full of major bugs that may never get fixed followed by GOTY awards. Classic Valve. It's still going to be awesome, though.

"Question:
How do I install the Hi-Def Model Pack?

Answer:
To install the model package, click on the install link below while Steam is running:
steam://installaddon/halflifehd

You can check that it has been installed by right clicking on the game in your Play Games menu and choose properties, under status it should list as HD Pack Enabled.

To uninstall the HD Pack, click on this link:
steam://removeaddon/halflifehd

The Hi-Def Model Pack is only available for Half-Life."

www.steampowered.com is your friend. :Þ

HL1 was the most revolutionary FPS since Quake and likely remains ones of the most influential of all time, but naturally its a little overshadowed by HL2 because the sequel took everything from the first and made it bigger better and "next-gen".

I still remember the opening sequence in HL1 giving me chills, nothing like it had been attempted in games up to that point.

The pacing and presentation and atmosphere of the original still stand up pretty well today if you don't mind circa-1998 graphics.

I asked this on another topic but got no response, anyone know if PC TF2 players can play with 360 TF2 players? i remember reading about it a while back but haven't heard anything since that.

Fastest speed run I've seen for Half-Life was about 48 minutes or so.

Anyways, I just ordered my copy online. I wasn't originally planning on getting it, but there's nothing else coming out that I want for another month or so.

No. Would be unfair, too.

"Xbox 360 development is being handled by Valve, and PlayStation 3 development by EA UK. In Valve's offices, team members regularly play cross-platform multiplayer games, but the studio's Doug Lombardi noted emphatically that such functionality will not appear in the final versions. He explained that it introduces more problems than it is worth, and if Valve ever decides to go that route it would be in a game designed for it from the start."

So, has there been any word on the PS3 version?

Last I saw it's now showing a December release date. I couldn't wait that long for this, though. Which is crazy cause I thought Valve said the PS3 version was 2-3 weeks behind. I'll be picking up Orange Box for the 360. God help the PS3 version...

Orange Box will be available to Steam users hours before Xbox users.

Half-Life 1 is my favorite FPS of all time. It's also one of the few titles deserving of a term like 'revolutionary'.

I think there's no set date. Someone corect me if I'm wrong but I think that Valve is not the one doing the PS3 port, which means that you probably shouldn't have high hopes for the PS3 version.

Does anyone know if Valve has confirmed whether the PC version will have upgraded lighting/models for the original Hl2 like the 360 version? That's the only reason why I haven't gotten it for the PC yet. I'll just get Hl2:Episode 2 for the PC if the original Hl2 isn't going to be upgraded.

I've already got the game preordered (got the $5 off deal from EB). Does anyone know when we will start seeing more reviews?

"HDR in the original Half-Life 2 (PC) - There was nothing concrete stated about the possibility of seeing the old Half-Life 2 maps updated with HDR effects. However, it could just be a “matter of time” before the maps are released for the PC version. Due to the programming similarities between the PC and 360 versions, it would actually be relatively easy to bring the 360’s HDR maps to the PC environment."

Have the system requirements for the PC version been announced yet?

I want the PC version, but I won't get it if my PC can't handle it and/or Toys 'R' Us isn't offering PC games as part of their Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal.
