"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Aargh! Why don't any of the stores nearby have this in?!?!?! I want to play NOW!

And, quick question for those who've finished both Portal and Episode 2, (if anyone) which game would you recommend playing first for maximum story enjoyment?

On the in-level loading:

It's slower on 360 than it was on PC, but not too bad. It's not 30-60 seconds, it's closer to 10-15, and you get a progress bar, PC just gets a LOADING sign.

Still a jarring thing for a console game though.

Is it better, worse, or equal to the Xbox port of Half-Life 2's loading?

when i played HL2 on PC when it first came out, i faced 30 - 60 second load times, so this'll be refreshing for me if anything.

Ugh no nearby stores have it yet... I may just end up getting it off Steam, I just can't take it anymore :lol

Do it, bro...you get Peggle Extreme! That game is crack...and will get you hooked on the devil mistress that is PopCap Games (tm).

Started Portal at 3 a.m. and finished at 6 this morning. It was bar-none, the single most awesome and satisfying 3 hours of gaming I've ever experienced. EVER! I was giddy, GIDDY I TELL YOU, after finishing this and could barely sleep. Who ever wrote the dialogue for this game is genius.

Have you read his blog? Barnolde is the last guy around here people should be looking to to give an honest assesment of a game on the 360.

Indeed. Barnolde running wild with info that's wrong (but on the bright side, paints the 360 in a negative light) isn't shocking. Now we just have to get dfyb in here.

Bout 45 minutes into Episode 2 and it's already incredibly.
That fight against the ant-lions as your trying to protect Alyx is absolutely incredibly. Perfect example of how presentation can enhance gameplay because it wouldn't feel nearly as desperate if they hadn't done such a great job of actually making you care about Alyx

Omg yes! I agree! Holy crap I started that first on midnight and got done around 3am. Portal is soo worth it!

Got damn fucking Amazon. I pre-orderd the PC version from them and this morning instead of waking up to a "your order has been shipped" email I get a "your order has been delayed" email. How the fuck does that happen? Shit.

"Best Buy, how can I help you?"
"I'd like to know if you have any copies of Half-Life 2: Orange Box in stock."
"The what?"
"Orange Box."
"I've never heard of that."
"Ok, here is the web ID."
"The what?"
"The Web ID from your website."
"oh, ok."
*checks his computer*
"Ok, we have 50 on order and we'll be getting it next Thursday."

Wtf.

I also called TRU, and FS and they all said earliest Friday.

EB is getting like 5 copies for their pre-orders.

Son of a bitch.

I played some Portal and Ep 2 last night...Portal was a lot funnier than I was expecting, can't wait to get back from midterms today (ech!) and get some real gaming in...

Ok I just started episode 2. 10minutes in. Alyx is not talking... neither is anyone else wtf. At first I thought it was due to the ant lions but then lol I'm in a game where no character can talk now, finally parity!

Checked the forums, quite a few people having the issue just have to change languages then back again as the english sound files were not decrypting properly.

But lol seriously it was WORKING until we got to the monitor. I thought Alyx was being totally quiet and just using arm gestures due to the ant lions :lol

Sure sucks when your net cuts out an hour before orange box get launched. : / This would be the day my net dies and portal and Ep 2 cant be activated....(im posting from a comp lab)

argh changing language deletes the sound files, another hour of downloads. Nooooo

*oh no wait, just had to change back to english working now*

I haven't started Ep2 yet, but Portal is currently my GOTY. I'm not kidding. Those three hours were the best gaming hours I've had in a long, long time. Utterly fantastic little game.

Guys,

Is the Half Life experience of Orange Box seamless?

AKA: Once you've finished HL2 the game, does the game just then automatically switch to EP1?

It's not a particularly big deal, but would make me feel happy!

Completely agree. I can't stop thinking about it.

Geeze...

Driving around in the canyon and taking out striders would be OODLES better if they didn't take out the Magneuson device generator at the Old Sawmill and if the car didn't control like total shit farts.

Does anyone know if the 360 version has southpaw control options?

Yes, it has that as an option. I'm pretty sure I saw it in the menu. Not near my 360 so I can't check it but I'm sure I saw it.

Same. Portal is amazing. Valve has got to be the top PC dev right now overall.

Portal...
The story was great, the attachment to the companion cube (pink hearts were a nice subtle touch), the incineration, the jokes... the attempt to destroy you in the fire (you are an android right?), the final fight, the outside view (apparently you die here?), the cake and companion cube, and the credit song/screen, the whole thing was wonderfully executed. I say again, the android chick you play as is hawt. You are an android right? You got little springy things on your legs lol.

As I said in the official thread, I hurled twice. Never done that playing a game before... I was doing some crazy acrobatic shit.

I'll let you know when I beat HL2. Game hasn't even been out for 24 hours yet. Geez. :lol

Yeah, when someone talks about loading in regards to the PC you have to be specific as to how long those PC loadtimes were. Thanks to both patches and newer hardware, the PC version loads very quickly, but when it was first released in 2004, most people encountered severe loadtimes (from 30 seconds to 2 minutes) and lots of stuttering. If the 360 only requires 10-15 seconds, that's pretty decent. Certainly not what I had hoped for, but not too bad.

the front end menu has all the games up for choosing. Even if you havent finished HL2 or episode 1, you can jump straight into ep2

You're definitely a human. The android comments are jokes. Those springy things on your legs were added by Valve as an explanation for why your character can survive falls that would surely kill Gordan Freeman.

Well, they called the transition from PC to 360 "perfect".

The complete review is here: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=85044
So the 360 version supports kb/m and 60fps? How is it perfect unless it supports that? It's not bad, it's just not as good ffs.

Blame IGN then.
You guys are incredible, really. Spin it all you want, it's not going to change the fact that the PC version is far and away the better version. It's still a 9.5 game since it's such a complete package, but c'mon, 2nd place isn't that bad!
speaking of info that's wrong, your PDZ and Resistance review ring a bell, biased out the ass

Made sense after I thought more about it. Thanks for confirming.
