"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Someone gift me ep. 1 so i can see how my comp handles the new stuff. (steamid: exmodel :D )

Definitely leaning toward orangebox 360 as of now, for the better hardware and hopefully improved load times. I have been getting into pc fps a lot more more though, until Halo hit.

And a question to any who wish to respond: do any of you happen to prefer the original HL engine over Source in terms of gameplay? I feel like Source definitely ups the immersion, but at the cost of losing some of the ability to execute all the crazy ass shit one might employ to survive. Even after playing source for years, I go back and play the oldies, feeling more accustomed there. The FOV is definitely wider in old hl, which I prefer (never understood the rising popularity of a limited FOV, just makes it feel like more of a video game to me). Apart from that, movement, jumping, and even aiming just feels more fluid. I'm just glad the community for the old games is still very much alive; I think a lot of people might feel the same way. Graphics have suffered with time, but i'm not too bothered as long as it's run in super-high-res+aa, and has colors. Anyone else agree? Mind you I haven't played the TF2 beta but i'm very much looking foward to how Valve is crafting their next big multiplayer game. I might just have to buy TF2 down the road on pc after I get orangebox 360.

Played my first TF2 game, got my ass kicked, but got away with 2 kills. Had to bump things down from 1680x1050 to 1280x768, which helped performance considerably. Love the art style for this game, it just helps it feel even more unique to play.

How the heck did this go from good Orange Box Debate into a Console vs PC fanboy troll thread?

FYI 360 support is going to be less, its a fact when dealing with a closed system such as Live. However, it does work great if you are into that kind of thing.

On another note:

WOO PORTAL

So, the Orange Box is great value if purchased via Steam, at 45/50 bucks a pop, and little distribution costs, wouldn't valve pretty much printing money right now?

Half-life 2 and Counter-strike success + Steam distribution cuts = Valve is printing money. For sure.

And I already have Portal preloaded, fo sho.

I'll be picking up the 360 version next week. :) I hope the console versions do well as I'd love to have valve port future games over.

Heads up guys, according to our CAG friends orange box PC will be $37.99 at CC on release day.
:lol Of course it will. Digital distribution for the lose.

CC did the same shit with Ep. 1. It was available in a box (with bonus manual and CD!) for like 12.99 the day it came out, a full $7 cheaper than the steam price, and about $4 cheaper than the pre-order steam price.

The PC guys paid $5 to play TF2 two weeks early and it was so worth it. But that price is just TOO good. Anyone who doesn't buy this game is apart of the problem.

Got my hd2900xt with black box coupon this afternoon.

I'm so ready for this.
after RAM/PSU/fan ship too.

I'm pretty sure you're gonna get the Orange Box.. as the black box had Episode 2 , Portal and TF2 to which last I read they cancelled since Episode 2 requires HL2 to play.

Episode 1 was $7.99 at CC either during its release or the week after. Thats where I ended up getting it.

Circuit City = Unofficial Steam Store for me

I have a question guys and I don't want to read the whole thread to look if it was answered anywhere.

I would like to know if Valve will put all the Calss introduction videos on the Orange box disc (Xbox 360). I would love to have them all together in HD on there...

dammit. I caved in and bought the Orange box even though I already own HL2 and Ep1. Such a rip off, but I gotsta have my Portal, TF2, and especially Ep2.

Been said a hundred times already, but HL2 and Ep1 are thrown in for free. EP2, Portal, and TF2 would be $80 if you bought them seperate. Not really a ripoff at $45.

No, because they aren't all done yet. We still have 6 more to go.

Im so hyped. Much more than I was for Halo 3. Im gonna start playing with Half Life 2 on the 360, even though i already beat that and Episode 1 on the pc a while ago. It will kind of be a marathon of awesomeness.

Can you edit and distribute custom Portal levels? (I'm talking PC)

Not yet, SDK for Source Engine 2007 has not been released at all yet. But in theory, you should be able to.

So will hl2 for Xbox360 be a port of the Xbox 1 version with slightly better graphics, or...?
Apparently it uses the extra technical stuff from Episode 1 and Lost Cost (HDR and some other stuff.)

Pretty sure it's just a PC port. I heard it's 720p@60fps but I'll believe it when I see it.

No. Its a port of the PC one with upgraded graphics. At least for a temporary amount of time until PC gets a patch.

No. Actually it's a new PC port with an improved source engine (new effects etc.)

$37.99 for the PC Orange Box?

Sold.

I'll make it work on my current PC.

PLZ run episode 2 plzzzzz.

Steamchievements DM, you can't stop it!

The 360 version of HL2 includes updated models for Vortigaunts (Made for EP2), HDR and Dynamic Lighting, among other things.

All of the games are locked at 30fps as well, so don't come back into this thread acting surprised that it isn't 60fps. If you've played TF2 with everything up, (Rig comparable in power to a 360) you'll know that chokepoints can cause slowdown. (Massive action). They were obviously going for consistency and safety across the titles as far as performance is concerned.

'Tis a shame too, because when Valve first started to talk about HL2 Orange box for 360 they mentioned 60FPS for all games except Episode 2 which might have been 30FPS.

A 6 hour episode, a 3 hour minigame, and a 6 map graphical update of a 10 year old mod. It may not be a rip off, but it's also hardly a bargain, and there should have been a Steam exclusive Black Box package of Ep2, Portal and TF2 for like 40 bucks, 35 if you pre-order. Fact.

Are we getting these graphics updates for HL2 as well?

You haven't played TF2.

I've played the shit out of TF2. Look, I am over it, but the whole, "they're giving you HL2 and Ep 1 for freeeee" thing is bupkis. A discounted black box for the Valve faithful that already own HL2 and Ep1 would have been sweet, but it wasn't to be because it would have somehow fucked with the orange box retail release. That's the story, baby. Don't try to fight it.

OK, so you're willfully ignoring the changes in Team Fortress.

Do you think the changes they made with TF2 from TFC are minor? I'm curious of which particular aspects of the mechanical change confine themself to be called a mere graphical update. The game feels different to me, whether the change is better and of more value than just a 6 map plus engine and art conversion I guess is a matter of personal preference and expectation.

I got an idea, get a job, make money, then not care whether you have to spend 50$ for 3 games. Which is incredible value btw, especially for the console folk. Ok.

Right, but we're not console folk. And being charged double simply because we bought the games as they were released when Valve could very easily configure a special pack for us, that's actually worth bitching about.
