"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

OK, so you're willfully ignoring the changes in Team Fortress.
No? TF2 is a beautiful update to TF that makes some basic changes to the core gameplay but is still more or less Team Fortress. It's not a big jump like UT to UT2K4 where like all the sudden FUCK I'm driving a tank.

Like I said, it's not a "rip off" as I certainly have spent $45 on shittier or less robust games (game packages, I guess) but the fact remains that if they can bundle HL2, Ep1, Ep2, Portal and TF2 for $50, they can bundle Ep2, Portal and TF2 for $35. Would have been nice. Wasn't to be. Life goes on.

Right, but we're not console folk. And being charged double simply because we bought the games as they were released when Valve could very easily configure a special pack for us, that's actually worth bitching about.

This is true. Valve should have had some sort of HL2 Black Box package on steam. There is no need to rebuy old games, and Valves retail setup for Orange box is actually counterproductive to their steam service.

Thankfully Valve delivers the goods so I won't get too upset.

Nobody would be bitching at all if this release only included episode 2, team fortress, and portal for 50$. Guaranteed. Think about it. It's only because the prospect of a black box once existed that people are turning on their bitching machines. Otherwise everyone would be thinking this was fine and dandy.

So I was going through the cache files and noticed that Valve has materials that would provide casual boardgames through Steam: checkers, chess, go, hearts, and spades. How long have they been planning this?

edit: that's a neat feature! I hope it goes live soon!

That would be pretty cool if integrated into their community features.

They've been planning that for quite a while. When Steam originally came out those games were available to play, but they took it out due to bugs I believe. It's cool to see those games pop up again

This might be the first game where I buy both versions. I've played all of HL2/EP1 singleplayer on PC so far, but XBL is such a better sitdown multi experience. TF2 just seems to lend itself so much better to an XBL environment. Will there be cross-platform multi or is that just a pipe-dream?

So. Never played any of these before. Should I get this? The graphics look so... dated.
oh btw, please don't shoot me

Dated? What whacked out crack r u on? Please share.

I pre-orderd the PC version from Amazon 2 days ago for $45 as I rather a boxed copy. Today I got a email from Amazon with a Beta key for Team Fortress and free Peggle Extream download. Downloading now.:D

I think its pathetic how Steam is supposed to save Valve publishing costs yet they charge more than what it costs to buy the retail version.

Orange Box Steam - $53 after tax ---> £26 for me
Orange box Amazon.co.uk - £25

Only £1 difference but its annoying. Its obviously been discussed before but forcing me to rebuy hl2 and ep1 is lame.

Steam prices are dictated by Retail stores, they'll pitch fits if the digital distro prices dip significantly cheaper than retail prices at launch (because they're afraid of it).

Thats why I rather the box copy because I'm basically saving nothing going with steam. Also I am glad for the inclusion of HL2 and EP1 as I think the other stuff amounts to a full game. I plan on selling HL2 and EP1 for like $10 so thats why I'm glad.

You have that and EA also throws a kickback to retailers to who advertise and post a "sale" price on a product within a certain %.. thus the product is still technically sold at the 44.95 or 49.99 just EA is footing the price difference.

The PC "elitists" are ruining this thread..."couch/big HDTV argument not valid" and all that shit - these guys never stop...is it that hard to understand that a lot of people don't have their PC's in the same room where their HDTVs and sound systems are?

Anyway I hope the frame-rate problems of the 360 have been ironed out as the footage from the 1UP Show was really choppy, I want to play HL2 in it's full glory.

So why are you trying to start it up again? No one has talked about that for a whole page. Move on. The thread has.

I believe the 360 is being fixed at 30fps. To keep consistency purposes and to avoid slowdown.

I just noticed my steam folder is 66GB, jesus why do they make it so convenient

GAF tell me to stop buying games I will never play off of Steam

Seriously, what the fuck, Sony!! It's a neverending parade of delays... Just checked out the gamestop site and what do I f'ing see: http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=270019
Now it's coming out in December? I thought it was just 2-3 weeks behind?! I'm ready to disconnect my PS3, pack it up, and not open the box again till 08. My nephew's 360 right now is connected to a 20" tv in a spare bedroom, but I'm ready to hook that bitch up to my HDTV. God damn delays, man...

It was said awhile back that the delay on the PS3 version wasn't due to Sony or the PS3 but rather that some ex-criterion guys were doing the port in the UK. It was locational I guess. In this instance it wasn't due to developers not working out the kinks in the PS3 version. That was the story at the time, though.

I am going to be playing on the server with you guys. If I stick with this game, which I should, I will donate a good bit of cash to help keep everything going. Also hit me up with a PM if you need a front page for the Neogafclan site or what not.

Criterion guys ?

best version confirmed. :P

Done preloading Episode 2. That's all of it, nothing else to start preloading. (Apart from possible extra MB's at release)

It's been a pretty long wait, but now it's near.

Heads up guys, according to our CAG friends orange box PC will be $37.99 at CC on release day.

I knew it. But throw in tax and it was five dollars to get TF2 early. Not happy on principle, but clearly worth it.

Irrelevant if you purchased it through steam.
Now that we got the non-answer out of the way, is it shipping on the Ninth or is it going to be in-stores on the Ninth?

I can't preorder it through Steam, because Steam is not available, and will never be, on my Xbox 360.

shipped i believe. i saw an ad saying it'll be available on the 10th.

haha out of sheer stubborn principle i still haven't pre ordered mine yet, i refuse to be forced to buy hl2 + ep1 twice, wheres the damn 3 game package you promised would be on steam valve.

if it comes down to it and i absolutely have to get orange box i'll be buying the retail aswell, £26 on steam already found it for £23 delivered for the boxed version and i bet i'll be able to find it for slightly under £20 come release.

Episode 2 preloading. :D

Finished HL2 and Episode 1 earlier this week and have started playing TF2 now. So far I'm loving it (even though I pretty much suck). I've tried playing on the NeoGAF server, but it's always empty when I wanna play. I'm in Europe, but wasn't there supposed to be an european GAF server as well?

I've played the shit out of TF2. Look, I am over it, but the whole, "they're giving you HL2 and Ep 1 for freeeee" thing is bupkis. A discounted black box for the Valve faithful that already own HL2 and Ep1 would have been sweet, but it wasn't to be because it would have somehow fucked with the orange box retail release. That's the story, baby. Don't try to fight it.

What's bupkis? And don't give ma any UrbanDictionary shit here.

Also, STEAM folder growing in size to 66 GB?

Jesus guys, it's dangerous.

Imagine if Blizzard joined STEAM :O
