"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Shit sake people. Enough of the platform wars. Leave it out.
This thread is for Orange Box GAME discussion, not for the pro's and con's of each platform. Everyone knows what they are gonna get with each versions.

The Orange box is the best money any of you will ever spend on a video game. It contains not only the best singleplayer first person shooter of all time, but also the best class based multiplayer fps out there and 2 shit hot expansions.... not to mention a new and innovative puzzle game.

Who gives a crap what system you are playing it on, so long as you get to play it!

your grounded, rational point of view is not wanted here.

Hmmm, interesting point would be even more interesting if Valve hadn't committed a Bischoff-like screwjob on PC gamers by apparently letting undeserving console gamers get the games a day early. WOW way to screw your core audience over. an elephant never forgets....

Probably through ICS, probably not through a proxy.

hai.

Does anyone know when the online review embargo is up? I don't want to start platform wars, but I'd like to know how the 360 version handles/looks compared to PC. I only have a crappy laptop so my 360 could get a look-in if analog controls are nicely done and the graphics can convince me to shell out £40 for the pleasure (I can play Ep1 1024x600 on my laptop. Graphics are not that important to me, but its something to take into consideration when looking at the whole package)

Man, **** the elephant, the elephant sounds like a douche anyway.

Wait the oh-so-agonizing day, then get over it, play it, love it, and spread the gospel that is Half-Life 2: Orange Box.

The only bad thing I'll say about Ep2 is that vehicle controls in an FPS have been firmly established on console, and it's Halo style. I find myself fighting these controls.

How do you drive and shoot then?

I'm not sure yet, I haven't had to. Turning for me is rather hard. :lol

I'm getting the hang of it though. It's just...I keep going to move the right stick and all it does is have me look at Alyx's purdy face.

Oh n/m I got it. I thought you meant HL2 vehicle controls were Halo style, when you are saying they are not. My bad.

When you are used to using the R stick to turn it can be a problem. At first I didn't like the vehicle controls in HL2 either but once you get used to them it isn't too bad. It allows you to use an on vehicle turret with the mouse or right analog stick.

I played and finished HL2 on PC. It was easier there. I'm getting it here.

Is acceleration mapped to a particular button on X360 pad? I can see how the PC version is easier if there isn't. You can accelerate with the W key, and het the A or D key easily in tandem to move left or right. Can't have the analog stick forced up and at the left at the same time.

If you can accelerate with the left trigger in a vehicle that would help.

I had no idea that the dev commentaries were going to be included in the 360 package. Even on TF2 and Portal. :):D

That is rad! Gah! I can't wait to get out of work and go on a city-wide hunt for this game.

Impressions on 360 so far:

Pros:
- Very nice and clean graphics + menus
- Amazingly complete package
- Some of the greatest games ever made

Cons:
- Semi-floaty controls (needed sensitivity increase)
- As mentioned, vehicle controls and changing weapon controls are bleh on a controller.
- Loading is sloooooow
- Frame-rate (not lag - FPS) problems in TF2. Some pretty severe slowdown.

For those with the 360 version, what are the frame rates like on the HL games?

I think I might grab this for the 360 as well. I already have the PC version pre-purchased, but I feel this game deserves to be purchased multiple times. Plus it would be a novelty to play with a controller and play with friends over Live who don't own the PC version.

How does the weapon switching work? Does it simply cycle through the weapons or does it bring up a menu like in Bioshock that pauses the game?

Just managed to pick up a copy of Orange Box on 360 from Walmart in Kansas City of all places, these stores really are having a hard time with breaking release dates at the moment hehehe It was funny actually cause the guy in the electronics dept said he couldnt sell the PC version until tomorrow but the 360 version seemed to be in the system and ready to sell.

You use the directional pad in 4 ways to scroll to the weapon. Not that hard once you know where to go i would imagine.

damnit, you're making me want to go look for the game right now.

I forgot to ask in my last post, but does anyone know if the 360 version released in the US is region free? I have a Japanese 360 and am curious if it will run on my 360 or if I have to get the Asian version (assuming there is one).

I'm really, really stoked for this entire package. Going to be playing Civ IV: BTS to pass the time until it unlocks tonight. This is one of, if not the, biggest releases of the year for me.

Of course it is, my PC sucks so I want to know how the 360 version will be. If it sucks , I'll either wait for the PS3 version or wait until I can upgrde my PC later on.

Not true, I bought & almost immediately returned Half-Life 2 on the Xbox when it came out. All because of the performance was so bad that it made the entire experience unplayable.
With the framerate that constantly dips below 15fps, jaggies & texture literally resolution worse than a first generation PS2 game.
It completely dampered the experience

So to anyone iwth the Xbox 360 retail version of the game

1) Can you confirm the game is running at 30fps or not?
2) Is the framerate locked 100% or still dips occasionally?
3) Does the game have any AA? Do the jaggies really look that bad?
4) Is the texture still low res-ish or is it on par with the better looking 360 games?

Someone posted earlier that the NTSC USA version is region free however that was tested on a PAL system. Nobody has tested on a Japanese system, Play-Asia doesn't list Orange Box on their compatibility guide and has the game as sold out/out of print.

I'm in the same situation as you and am also trying to figure out if I should wait for Play - Asia or take my chances with the NTSC U version.

The vehicle control couldn't be any worse than it was on the PC with a mouse and keyboard. That fucking sucked.

Am I missing something here? I thought vehicles in HL2 controlled fine, better then fine, even.
