I just collected the
5th cache. in Episode 2. I have 3:30 logged. I think I'm nearing the end of Under the Radar.

How much more do I have to go? I want to jump into Portal and I can't wait.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by the visuals?

Its safe to say the source engine hasn't aged all that well but it certainly looks good enough thats for sure.

Oh, I'm totally enjoying it. I think it's the best of the HL2 series so far. By far.

But I really want to play portal but I only want to start one game at a time. :D

From an Engine made in 2004 with tech from 2001..

It looks great!

However, its never how HL looks, its the Art and Storytelling that make it so great.

That reminds me, when is PowerPlay coming out :lol

I still love how HL2 looks, let alone Episode 2, which I think looks gorgeous.

We've never seen the Source engine in this kind of environment, so I don't know where you're getting this frame of reference

Also, it's the console version.

I'm really not seeing where it looks bad. In fact I'd say it looks pretty good, especially given the age of the engine as mentioned before.

Sure it's not.... Gears of War/Killzone 2 etc quality, but theres nothing "wrong" with it.

From a pure glance, Gears looks better, though I'd say something like Ep2 is more impressive, though I think UT3 will surpass it as these engines continually get upgraded and refined.

Here's our Half-Life 2: Episode Two review:

http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=610

With neither length nor the release frequency of the Half-Life 2 "episodes" being particularly episodic, it has fallen to the narrative and plot elemets in Episode Two to live up to the designator. Episode One took criticism for lacking tangible plot relative to Half-Life 2; whereas Episode One was largely driven by a general sense of urgency, Episode Two is much more practically driven by concrete plot motivations in the style of Half-Life 2.
The game sees a broader range of environments, that in a first for the series leave concrete and steel behind and branch out to the wilderness. In a great touch that speaks to Valve's instinct for thematic cohesion and iconography, a constant visual reminder of the center of the Half-Life 2 mythos is visible in the distance from nearly every outdoor location.
For better or worse, elements of the game's fiction allow for occasional brief toe-dipping into more static cutscenes. And the game's ending, which surely fits the "episodic" bill better than anything else in either episode yet, is less of the "I wish they didn't end this here" variety as in Episode One and more of the "TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, YOU BASTARDS" kind. You know, in a good way.
But in a genre where even the best games tend to just pick one thing and do it well, Valve continues to pick more and more things and do them well--and some of them the company still does better than anyone around. Once again, the bar has been raised, and it is impossible not to recommend this game.

What'll happen when Ep. 3 comes out? Hopefully console version buyers won't miss out.

Also, what's up with IGN saying HL2 is a beefed up version of the Xbox port? Does it look bad?

thats what I wanna know because from the little footage they showed on 1upshow last friday, it looks everybit on par with EP1 and 2....well at least as far as HDR is concerned

Yeah, doesn't make sense. Other then the fact its running 30fps, its on par with PC, with extra stuff on HL2 EP 0

me thinks maybe editors just haven't had an actual look at the PC version from 2004 in awhile...

Here's hoping that Valve will do something sneaky and does in fact have the HDR update for the original HL2 ready right when the game goes life.

They did something similar with the sneaky HL2 deathmatch release after all.

as stated before, HDR is already been added to HL2...just watch last friday's 1upshow

...they actual discuss how it makes the opening more dramatic because of it...

I think he's referring to the PC version. As far as I know, only the 360 version of HL2 is confirmed to have the updated HDR lighting, so far.

Sucks....to...be...me!!!

HL2....runs fine, fun as hell

Lost coast...same.

All the CS upgrades...fine!

Pre-ordered Orange Box...installed TF2, and pre-loads, and Ep1.

CRASH!!!

None of the new stuff will play. None of the fixes available online will work. Valve Tech support is not answering...

sad day indeed :)

Gabe has said it's just a matter of when, not if. So it is at least coming at some point.

Valve will give you HDR lighting, but they want $1 million up front.

Sounds like someone is behind on their tithes to the Valve Gods.

Intel P4 3.0, 2gb RAM, Nvidia GForce 7800GS

Error is related to Shaderapidx9.dll

What I have tried...

- Reinstalled all of Steam & all games
- Did the ingame GCF file checks, all good
- Full re-install of latest Direct X
- Full re-install of latest video drivers (did a "clean" first)
- Checked for updated drivers for sound, network, and any other hardware I could think of
- Did WMI repair per Valve site
- Checked DCOM service per Valve site
- Turned off all other apps running
- Used every "Startup command option" I could think of

Searched the net for hours. Found tons of people with same problems, but no concrete solutions. Some things work for some, most for none. Even tried some random batch files for more WMI stuff, and re-installs of files from Windows CD.

I have pretty much given up at this point lol

I'm not sure if by reinstall you mean reinstalling from a backup on a DVD\CD\HDD, but try deleting the game content files and try redownloading everything again. Perhaps the .DLL is corrupt and the file checks aren't working. You might as well, you have nothing to lose.

try going into the properties in TF2. Set launch options to -window, and -width 1024 -height 768. Crazy, but it might boot the game for you, if you haven't tried it.

Otherwise, check these drivers, they are specifically for TF2 on a 7 series:

Listed in my post, did that. Even went as far as to find and remove every instance of that DLL on my computer and have it 'regenerated" when needed.

Tried every launch option I could find reference to (as I said in original post) and I have tried three sets of drivers (including beta drivers) and am curently using the newest ones available for my card.

I am resolved to waiting on Tech Support at this stage. I'll just start in on the game some other day that tomorrow I guess. Unless by some miracle Portal & Ep2 work...but I doubt that. I still won't play Ep2 till I finish Ep1 so it's irrelevant.
