"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Well I finished Portal. Spectacular.

It seems short but very satisfying. I wonder how many will finish it in one sitting. It's that addictive. I couldn't stop myself from going from puzzle to puzzle. The voice work and writing is top notch. End Credits are something to see and hear. Cake.

I haven't played Episode 2 or Team Fortress 2 yet, but they'll have to really hit it out of the park to beat Portal as the best part of this package.

While ep 2 was decrypting, steam crashed. Once i restarted steam and let the decryption finish, I was able to play the game the game started to bug out. WTF! Alyx's mouth isnt moving. I cant hear her talk either. I've tried restarting the thing but i keep getting the same problem.
This is what I have in my console.

Failed to load sound "*vo\outland_01\intro\al_rbed_callinggordon04.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository

rclick Ep 2 shortcut in steam. go to Local Files tab. Click 'Verify Integrity of game cache.'

if there are any problems with missing or dodgy files it'll find them and re-download what you need.

Portal crashed to desktop first time I tried it. The red mist of rage ascended. Tried it the second time and all is well. The red mist of rage descended.

The source enigine is showing the first signs of starting to stress my X1800XT, but its obviously optimsed to hell.

HL2 is back baby yeah!!

That doesn't work. I've check the steam powered forums. They said to change language from properties to russian then switch it back to english. Now I have to wait 46 mins for the sound decrypt.

Portal first impressions:

fuck yeah.

Haven't finished preloading ep2 due to the shitty campus connection, so that comes later. Time for sleep.

360 owners: How are the jaggies? I've heard people/sites say the game could use more AA. Are the jaggies similar to something like Skate where they are present but not too distracting. Or is it bad and distracting like Halo 3?

I don't really get into PC gaming and to be honest, haven't got into much other than Bejewelled and Peggle since the original Half Life. But of course... i'm interested in this!

Anyone care to save me a search and tell me how the various games might run on my PC? It's a P4 2.4ghz, 512 ram and Radeon 9000. I know it's not much but i heard that HL2 was still playable on lower end systems.

I'll get back to you on the jaggies as I only touched on each game, other than Portal. I did notice something odd in the first level of Half life 2. The energy barriers just outside the train station, the blue ones, look REALLY low res. I don't know if my memory of the original game is wrong but I could have sworn they looked much better on the PC.

Other than that, Half Life is divine with HDR.

Well I'm kinda disappointed about the performance of the game on the 360, slow loading times, 30fps, jaggies & floaty controls....it sounds a mediocre port considering that it was delayed and being ported by Valve.

Just played roughly the first fifteen minutes of Portal. Fuck awesome so far.
For some reason though, I'm not getting any of the voice acting.

Help please.

Steam failed to decrypt the voice gcf.

Go to steam, my games, right click hl2 ep 2, go to properties, go to language, change it to russian, change it back to engish, and restart steam.

You'll have to wait a while for it to basically redownload the voice gcf.

I can't imagine using the grav gun without a sensitive mouse...... There's times when you need lightning reactions....

Damn Portal keeps crashing on me whenever I walk through the first portal right in the beginning. TF2 doesn't even start up without crashing either. Sigh...any suggestions? or is my laptops graphics card too shitty or something?

Wow, love the writing.

The floor gave way and I fell into a hole while the snarky vort was following me. When I climbed back up, the vort asks, "what did the Freeman expect to find down there? Truly, the Freeman leaves no path unexplored."

Going to stop playing Portal for now. I just finished the part with the weighted companion cube. Brilliant game so far. Incredibly innovative and unique.

I've had my PC copy since 3pm or so... yesterday now (man it's Wednesday now, ouch), but haven't really had the time to mess around with it. Gamestop got it to me a day early :D

Strange thing though, the first disc boots up and stuff just fine, but the second disc didn't do a damn thing. It has all kinds of data files in it though, but no executables. Maybe it's for installing HL2, which I didn't need to do.

Sounds like you should've opted for seperate shipments.

Also, did you really get Order# 100000000000 or was that clever censorship? I feel stupid for asking but... :D

You might play it, but very uncomfortably. I had a similar system and upgraded to a 9800pro for HL2. Even then it didnt run all that great, so I added another 512 ram and that seemed to do the trick.

(CS: source still ran like shit)

Portal ending spoilers

The end boss was one of the coolest fights ever, it wasn't hard or anything but just hearing her ramble rocked

Also someone find me the ending credits song!

Also valve should sell plush companion cubes.

Just got to the wide open part of Episode 2, love the game so far. Seems reminiscent of HL1 in a lot of parts. Can't wait to play more, it's just awesome :D

It would be insane if EA port for PS3 run and looked lot better. I'm afraid it could be even worse TBH.

The only place to say that it had floaty controls was the 1up show.

fatghost said BTW if anyone is worried about how HL2 plays with the 360 pad, don't be.

It's pretty fucking good.

and also he (or someone else) said that the loading times are basically the same as the pc version (sometimes a bit faster)

at least its 30 fps LOCKED and jaggies, havent heard any complaints about that (at least where i ahve read impressions and reviews.

You don't trust the 1up Show? The Xbox1 version had the same issue.

Unlike on PC, these loads are not a few seconds, but often 30 seconds to a full minute. This is especially aggravating when a load comes during a high-speed chase.

<10 seconds on PC. 30-60 seconds on 360.

BTW. A trusty polish online game store now shows Orange Box PS3 date for 16 November.

I can pretty much bet this is it for EU. (Could be bit sooner as here games arive often few days later)

OLD?

Comparing HL2 to HL2 is bad now?

Wow.
comparing PCs to consoles, WOW.
lol <10 seconds on PC - 30-60 seconds on 360 hahaha
time to remove my HDD from my PC, just to play HL2 from DVD drive on my PC to see if it loads quickly or not.

I'm gonna pick this up for my 360 after playing some PGR4.
