"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

I have a question about portal...
The chick that you are has those things on her legs and reminds me of those slaves in the combine. Is there a link here?

HMM. Well the slaves with the things didn't have feet though, they only had the springy stuff. But you have feet plus springs..

The 360 version support HDR, I'll take that on my 57in 1080p display w dd5.1 and a big fat leather couch\coffee table over 60 FPS and better tex filtering anyday.

I'm going to just wait, if the PS3 version comes out with HDR and kb\mouse support I"ll get that one no questions asked.

Decrypted this morning, played the first 10 Portal puzzles and 15-minutes of E2 then went back to TF2 for two hours. I just can't break from TF2! Best team-based FPS ever, seriously.

Could somebody please confirm if the 360 edition shipped with bot support for TF2? Google search returns a hundred conflicting reports on this point.

There's no bots in TF2.

So I'm interested in seeing some benchmarks from the various PC users who are playing through Episode 2.

In the outdoor environments I get 25-35fps while in door I max out at around 50fps. Seems a bit low considering I am running a decently high end rig (E6850, 8800GTX, 2 gigs of RAM, XP). Just wondering what kind of performance others are getting.

Currently running the game in 1600x1200, all options set to high, 4xAA, 16xAF, Full HDR, and motion blur.

I'll be playing in a min. E6850 @ 3.6, 4GBDDR2, XP64, 8800GTX @ Stock.

Has anyone with the X360 version played TF2 yet?

I played a few games last night and even got an achievement. I was matched in a game with Kobun Heat (one from wired) from this forum I believe. It's good on the 360 but the missing 8 players make it a little less chaotic. It plays great as long as you go into a server with a good ping. Personally, I don’t think I’ll be playing it on the 360 as much as the PC for obvious reasons. I’m sure when more people get the game and learn how to play, the experience should get better. Since more people will have it today I will try it as soon as I get home.

Can you get the achievements in player matches ?

Yes.

That and is there also clan support in TF2?

No.

So the 360 version supports kb/m and 60fps? How is it perfect unless it supports that? It's not bad, it's just not as good ffs.

Probably because none of that really matters as the game still plays smooth enough for the majority of people to not even notice, and since we've all moved to controllers now, the KB/Mouse people can go stuff it.

I just randomly dicked around in a game of TF2 with a near identical spec.

at 1920x1080, max settings, 16xQAA, 16xAF, Motion Blur, HDR etc... with vsync on it never budges from 60 frames/sec. Then again, I would fucking hope so.

Another thing to consider for first time HL2 players...

The original PC release was filled with problems ranging from lengthy loading, stuttering, unstable framerates, etc. It was still enjoyable, but the experience was anything but polished. The 360 version runs at a rock solid framerate (even if its only 30) while sporting nice motion blur, HDR, improved models, quick loading, and easily accessible 5.1 audio. They each have their own edge, but for someone most interested in a single player experience, the 360 version is pretty awesome.

I would love to play it on a PC with all of those things cranked up, though. My PC can run HL2 very smoothly, but not with 16x everything at 60 fps. Really, though, it's more about comfort in my case. I still haven't found a way to make PC gaming in the living room comfortable and I refuse to game on anything other than my Pioneer 5080. I do have a dedicated PC in there, though, but I typically restrict my PC gaming time in order to preserve my wrists...

Can you play as a party in Ranked Matches?

Well you can sort of, your friends can join your game and choose the team they wished.

But if you are just looking for achievements unlocks you can do these via player matches as well so no big deal.

I love TF2 I was thinking it was gonna be gimped but I'm glad to say I totally enjoy it. The aiming isn't that bad, and some players could do rocket jumps already pretty well so I guess it takes a little getting used to.

The loading time in the single player isnt that bad, especially those in mid level, I counted and they are around 15-20 seconds so it's not as bad as the review stated.

why even go on the defensive and bring it up...for the 1000th time

its especially funny seeing as though im currently playing through episode 2 on a 1080p tv, 5.1 sound on my pc with 60fps+ 8xaa 16xaf.

Also, for people looking for it. Best Buys web site can show you what stores carry it with their "in store pickup" option. All the ones in my area have it in stock.

Sorry man, just responding to the same-ole drivel that is spewed in every thread about it. You can't really argue the point, so why laugh at it?

Can't wait to get my 360 version today.

I bought the PC version a few months back when best buy had Half Life 2 for $10, but it stutters horribly due to having an old dell with integrated graphics. I don't really play PC games except the odd old adventure game or RTS (Love rise of nations/legends) so I don't see myself paying $50-100 more for a graphics card just to get it running decently. I like the convenience of just putting it in the 360 and playing. No bullshit, it just works.

And couch is a big deal. I work as a graphic designer so I'm at a desk all day. I don't want to do that when I get home.

Fuck me I'm hyped about HL2 again.

I'm sooo glad I've completely avoided anything related to episode 1 until now, going through ep1&2 back to back should be quite proper.

I fucking knew that whole "regular episodic content" line was a pipe dream and that two would be so fucking far off behind one.

:lol

Whatever. If it's your only way to play the game, then by all means play it, it's not bad by any means, just don't think you're getting the best experience out there by discrediting legit advantages of the PC one, that's just foolish.

same here man, i hate that crap integrated intel extreme garbage

I got it for 360 today and have only played some TF2 and HL2 so far. HL2 has a pretty solid frame rate and some really good floor textures.

Also the aiming doesnt feel "floaty" to me at all :D

Any credibility you may have had in this thread was gone a good while ago. Actually about 2 or 3 pages ago. The Eurogamer review pretty much put an end to that.

I got my 360 copy a few minutes ago. I was worried when the first Gamestop I went to said they sold out, but happily another store 2 blocks away had copies.

Like SonOfABeep, I'm at a desk all day too, and there's no way in hell that I'd want to sit at a desk after work to play. It's not just couch vs. chair (couch FTW!), but during the day my eyes are focused at my monitors, so at night, I'd rather focus them at a further distance or else my eyes get strained.

Wow. The ending to Portal. Oh wow.

PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS

PORTAL ROCKS PORTAL ROCKS !!!

Holy crap, it only lasted about 3 and a half hours, but that was some of the best 3 and a half hours ever.

I wish I could make a portal from my house to work ...

Oh and a controller will never replace Keyboard/Mouse for me.

so I just finished portal and its the best game ever.

and Team Fortress 2 is also the best game ever.

I havn't played episode two yet, but HL2 and EP1 are also best games ever, so if Ep2 is the same level of quality, it too will be the best game ever.

so the Orange Box= the best anything of any category ever?

Team Fortress 2 ran fine for me in 360 version too. Didn't notice any frame problems, even with a bunch of rockets and players on screen.

Compared to what's out there on consoles, it's definately awesome. This is the best shooter package on 360 hands down, TF2 is awesome fun and HL2/Ep1/2 is the best single player fps experience on 360 period.

guys its on 360, pc, and ps3 and is a damn good set of games.

please be better than 1st graders arguing at lunch over the merits of sonic vs mario for once.

I spend 9+ hours a day 6 days a week behind a computer, for the most part the last thing i want to do when I get home is spend more time destroying my wrists with a kb and mouse.

That and I don't have tiem to dick with settings and configs, and whats up with the PC not haveing all the upgraded graphic "features" of the 360 version?

How can anyone say it's the better version without these features, seriously I'm just asking?

You do realize that no one has the slightest interest in anything that you post... right? Since everyone else is ignoring you, I just wanted to be kind and clue you in on the fact. :)

Guess I missed this bit in the previous posts, but what upgraded graphic features does the 360 have over the PC?

The PC version should have superior texture quality and possibly better fps depending on how you want the game looking. I wouldn't say this makes the PC version the better version because it really is up to what the person may prefer. Someone might like playing the game on a 50inch HDTV with surround sound and someone else might like playing the game on a 20+ inch monitor with mouse and keyboard.

Ok, I was just wondering if anyone else was trying to download any of the Orange Box games now and not receiving anything? Portal is seemingly stuck at 59%..... I tried exiting steam and logging in again, and after a couple of "cannot connect to steam" messages I got on again and still nothing. :-/

So, for the fresh faced newb, as awesome as Portal is supposed to be, should I play through all the Half Life's first?
1) No story reason.
2) On the other hand, HL2 is one of the best games ever made, so why would you want to put it off?
3) On the other other hand Portal is cool and really short so it's like an appetizer before the main course.

just got done with a team fortress capture the flag.... I definitely am more drawn to this multiplayer vs Halo 3's right now.... it is bad ass!

I'd play portal after HL2 and EP1, imo. There's a bit of story there (If you look and listen). Though if you haven't played HL1 you're already behind.

Well, yeah, but I've heard I'd do okay without HL1. I managed to avoid spoilidge for BioShock and H3 so I think I'll be able to hold off the throngs and go through the Half Life's first. But if I play portal before Ep 2 I won't miss any references or the connections?
