"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Portal was great.

My only complaints are that it was a little too easy. Also, I wish there was
more of a connection between it and HL other than Aperture Science being a competitor to Black Mesa

Community maps are going to keep this around for a loooooong time.

Now, onto Episode two if the damn thing would decrypt faster!

How much more demanding is Portal, TF2 and EP2 compared to EP1?

My PC is so-so (planning on upgrading in a month or two), but EP1 runs decently with a few things turned down - should I expect similar results from Orange Box?

There's more, you'll understand once you play through episode two :)

I have to reiterate on portal, the whole game is just such an amazing experience anyone who considers themselves a gamer needs to play it.

Before I go back to the game, I'm just gonna say that I'm GLAD the 360 version is good and getting 9.5's and shit. It's fucking HALF-LIFE 2, everyone and their mother should be experience it in HD glory. If you don't have a good PC, it's 360 or bust and it makes me happy see -> :) that it's actually a good port, not like that awful Xbox1 version. I never called the 360 one bad, in fact, it's better than bad, it's good. I can't make it any clearer than that.

Everyone: Just get Orange Box on any platform you can, it's the best usage of your money ever. You know what's the best option for you, just fucking play the game.

Regarding Ep2, what this thread was about:
The open world parts rock! It doesn't even feel like HL anymore, <3 Valve <3

This entire console vs PC crap is so childish.

People trying to tell others how to spend their money and then mocking them for it is just silly.

Would be nice if you guys would actually discuss the damned game instead of childish fighting.

If you ran Ep 1 alright, you should be able to run Ep 2 with medium textures. Just remember to check and see if the "shadow quality" defaults to high. If it does, set it to medium because if it's on high, the game will chug whenever you turn on the flashlight, or at least it did on my machine.

I'm about halfway through Episode 2 and I've been loving every minute of it. I'm feeling a bit of relief and surprise, considering I thought Episode 1 was pretty terrible.

Cool, thanks for the response. Just picked it up for the PC and worse comes to worse I'll beable to play it max'ed out in a month or so.

I've only played chapter 1 of Episode 2 so far, but I thought it was pretty meh actually. Especially when considering how absolutely amazing and fabulous the first chapter of Episode 1 was.

Does the xbox360 version of Orange box include Counter-Strike: Source ?
None of the versions does.

The US version of The Orange Box is REGION - FREE.

I took the risk myself and bought the game so J-Box GAF can enjoy. Play-Asia, please have more stock next time.

Steam forums are tanking atm so I'll ask this here.

Has anyone else had missing textures from time to time in Episode 2? (PC) I presume its related to the small bugs that have appeared when unlocking. Theres a certain type of crate that is invisible to me and I can see thru walls from time to time and the stock black n pink square pattern texture where there should be a certain wooden one.

Annoying but not game breaking.

No problems here.

I don't think it's my graphics card, pretty sure the textures are just missing, which would make me think they didn't unlock properly. I cud probably fix it by redownloading ep2 but thats not going to happen right now :p

When's the Gamespot review due? Oh please Oh Please Oh Please Jeff Gerstmann you can't rate it less than 9.2. Chest pains!

I have an old PC and it ran Ep 1 acceptable when I lowered a few settings. I'm running Episode 2 and Portal at whatever Valve recommended this time without having had to change anything. Very pleased with the performance.

Momentum puzzles in Portal were the best. I want more with higher speed requirements.

I absolutely rate the Orange Box a 10.

Controls are great. However, there is less "help" with auto aiming than in Halo 3.
I agree... there is barely any auto-aim I have both the pc and 360 version. Surprisingly it controls very well, even on TF2 ****GASP****.

EDIT: I think the PC version of portal has an option for extra maps... are these on the 360 version, because I don't remember seeing them.

Man, the 360 version of this is one slick package. The attention to detail in everything, the menu's, the game, little conveniences like remembering control settings across different games, etc.. is great. I've only played slightly less than an hour of Half-Life 2 and listened to a small part of the commentary on one of the TF2 maps. And holy shit does the scout move fast. :lol But he controls surprisingly well. Only complaint so far is that the game could use a little bit more AA, but anyone who passed up the game because of that would be a fool.

edit: Yeah, there is little if any auto-aim in this game. But I don't see that as a problem.

Anyone else taking a trip down memory lane before hitting up Episode 2?

God this game is so good. Best paced fps evar.

Hopefully we can get the system comparisons out of the way and talk about the game now. The only reason I reluctantly mentioned anything is I saw the 360 version taking an undeserved beating in this thread, and for those who have never played HL2 I wouldn't want to see them turned away from the game. Buy it, play it, love it.

i think i'm gonna play hl2 again before i start the episodes, but all that is after i finish portal.

oh god, overwhelming abundance of love for valve threatening to break free from the confines of body leaving behind lifeless shell which will only play ninja bread man

Canada...the box was ugly enough..................................why?

Now if you'll excuse me, time for some BOITE!!!

There is, it's mentioned near end of portal

During the count down timer near the very end the computer starts mentioning that you don't want to go outside, because you don't want to see what's happening out there. Also she says you don't want to destroy her because the only thing keeping Them away was her

I came home from work for a few minutes and was happy to see that Portal was ready to play. But I wasn't too happy to see Episode 2 needed to be decrypted. It wouldn't bother me so much if I could play Portal and decrypt Episode 2 at the same time. Ah, whatever.

I'm going through the original and Eps. 1 again before I dive into Eps. 2. I'll probably tackle Portal in small bits unless it sucks me in.

Edit: This will be my 3rd time through both games. Dear Lord.

I'm seriously dissapointed in the lack of Half Life in your avatar.

Yeah, unless Epic or Infinity Ward can pull out something awesome, Orange Box is definately shooter of the year on all platforms.

Portal IS a small bit! Play through it all in one sitting, it's better that way. It's not very long.

UT3 and CoD4 bundle?! Other than that, I don't think the 5 AAA games of The Orange Box are going down without a fight.

So I came in really quick to chime in and say this is my first experience with the Half-Life universe and damn is it a good experience so far! I loved BioShock and Halo 3 but if this thing keeps geting better as it goes on (just made it to Ravenholm) then this may end up being my personal game of the year.
