I was waiting for some sort of twist at the end to make it sound empowering: "I'm UGLY but I can WERK it, etc."

But it never came

Beyonce's live performance game can't be clockedt by anyone currently in the industry, but with that said she does something that makes a lot of her live performance near-unlistenable to me: she loooooves singing with that DAMN reverb/echo filter turned ALL THE WAY UP on her mic. It makes it sound like there's always 3 other Beyonces harmonizing with her. It's grating to me, because her voice doesn't need all of that.

Oh, and overdoing the runs, as illustrated in point #7 in that vid I linked above. She's just as bad as Christina in that regard.

I sort of like the effect. You know how I feel about the basic timbre of her voice, and I feel like it improves from that just because it makes her sound more full. To each his own!

Well. Two things. One, I don't think Beyonce's most egregiously bad sort of examples of tasteless melisma are as bad as Christina's. That said, I do agree that she can go overboard. And secondly, I don't find it as bad when Beyonce holds out one run (usually); I think her bigger problem is when she does this and makes every word - minor exaggeration alert - into a run.
