The GAF Video and Filmmaking Thread

I've been posting here a lot without adding anything to the thread, so I guess I should show off what I have been working on:

Vimeo rough cut

Many shots in there are outdated and have already been replaced, and you can watch them in the second teaser.

Hope at least someone here finds it interesting!

what would be the best way to learn how to use after effects for free? lol

Youtube tutorials, there are plenty.

I actually have none of this stuff because I am poor and don't have a decent enough job to get any of it.

However the stuff I used back in school fits this bill.

1. You're gonna wana shoot a high frame rate on your camera to get good slow mo. When you import it into your editing program be sure to import it at a lower frame rate (24fps at the least)

3. I had a friend who created his own with a part of a bench weight. I'm sure a google search will find one for ya.

3. Use a shotgun mic and a boom poll. It's the best all around sound capturing device in the field.

Well I have the canon hv20, which has the whole 24p 60i thing. Which mode should I shoot with the high shutter speed? Also how fast should I crank it up to? I've tried this before, but it still came out pretty jittery. What's the best way to slow it down?

Also what's your friend think of his steadicam? Thanks for the help :).

i dunno if you know about this, but we just got one of those hd antennas for our tv and theres some channel 47-6 that is showing a bunch of short films with crazy low budgets and wild ideas right now, i dunno what the channel is though

Yeah, youtube or places like creativecow.net or videocopilot.net

is that what he was asking? i was reading it as in he wanted to know if there's a site where he can learn how to pirate a copy...

so I think my friends and I are going to start making a Wolfman movie. The twist is that he's a virgin and he really wants to get laid, but transforming into a wolf keeps fucking up his chances.

What do you guys think is the best way to put a 30min or so short film online? Break it up into five 6minute segments?

but really, i think it depends on where you post it. if it's on vimeo, and it's good enough, i'd do three 10-minute episodes.

i think youtube has a shorter attention span, probably be safer to have 3-4 minute episodes, max would be 5 minutes, in my opinion.

Yeah I'd go with Vimeo. That seems to be the choice for filmmakers.

but are you? maybe you are and it just took an article on you to see it.....

j/k

for the record, i know i pretty much am, mainly for my lack of patience for nonsense on the job. and i don't sugarcoat. that's the definition of being a prick to a lot of people.

I am kinda. It's more the way it's written. It's a puff piece about a short film festival, and the opening paragraph sets up a very negative outlook for the rest of it...

You be the judge.

I sorta made a thread about this but it didnt get many hits so this seems as good a place as any to ask...(I'm also reposting this from another thead :P)

Does anyone have any advice on what kind of camera to get for a mid-professional needs?

I work at a community college doing video production and we are thinking of upgrading from our HD Sony Handycam to somthing more professional.

Budget is pretty tight but is there like a "standard" mid level professional startup camera I should be looking at?

Anyone wanna give me any sort of help or a direction I should be looking?

Better yet if you guys could read this OP: http://neogaf.net/forum/showthread.php?t=419878

I would totally appreciate any help you could give :)

not entirely your fault. sure you may have said those things, but the writer could have painted you in a better light.

example: This is Christensen's second short film, and second short film festival. In 2009, he entered a comedy called "Flip" in Las Vegas' 48-Hour Film Festival and took home five awards.

"But we didn't win best film or whatever it was called," he says.

dude honestly could've left the quote out. it doesn't add anything, and it makes it sound like you have little respect for the festival and/or its awards.

also, the paragraph: "Modern Art" required an investment of one Sunday and $1,200 -- $500 of which came from the parents of Matt Orchowski, Christensen's director of photography.

this adds zero to the overall story. so what? they say nothing leading up to the sentence, and there's no follow-up to it. it doesn't make sense to have it there, like selling a bowling ball in a golf shop. seems random.

but i see what you mean, the quotes don't sound great out of context. but again, i kinda blame that on the writing.

also, would've been nice of the guy to throw a link to your website or something.

Heh, yeah I asked for a plug...he said they don't do that.

I wrote him when I read it, and said:

""If you're going to waste time and money making a film, you might as well waste as little of both as possible."

I think you're going to upset a lot of people in the festival with this line. It's a pretty negative way to start an article about something like this."

His response?

"if by negative, you mean real, then i agree.

the organizer of the festival is happy with this article. he is happy to have any coverage in the r-j.

and the other filmmakers are upset, yes, but only because i chose to write about you instead of them.

but thanks for your input on what i've been doing for a living for 25 years. once i get around to viewing your short film, i'll let you know if there's any choices you made that i don't agree with.

What a dick lol

What kind of filming are you planning on? Long documentary type stuff or more narrative? That'll help with a decision.

Probably shorter more self contained things. Maybe promo peices, for the students ect. to put on the website/youtube. Things Filming the Presidents addresses, instructional videos, things like that. We're not going to be creating short films anytime soon.

holy shit. you should totally copy and paste that into the comments section. the guy isn't doing anyone any favors with his write-up.

i'm happy the show organizer is pleased to have some coverage, but the specific focus was on you, so, in my opinion, you're the guy that needs to be happy.

if the dude wrote back to me like that, i think i'd be tempted to go off on him, and then forward the email to someone above him, or demand that the article get taken down, or something... anything. what a prick. did you at least write back and say "blow me"?

What level of camera is that? Is that like high grade professional? Or is it somthing along the low/mid grade level. Were just a community college and I'm sorta the first video guys they have had and were trying to get a video production position sorta started.

Right now were using a Sony HDR-XR500V HD camera. I just got into this position right out of college, so I'm not really all that knowledgeable on all the technical stuff (we learned more composition and editing at school rather than tech specs)

what you've been using is considered consumer, the camera i posted is considered prosumer.

if the idea is to educate kids on learning the basics of video journalism, then something similar to the camera i posted is necessary. it has hook-ups for XLR audio cables, BNC connections, and anything else you might need to teach news-style shooting. but if the idea is to just say that you have a video department, then you might as well just collect a handful of security cameras and call it a day.

Sorry if I'm not being clear, I work in the Marketing/Media Dept. I'm not an instructor, I wont be teaching or making a class or anything, basically our dept. wants to start adding/creating more video projects for the college.

For example we recently had a scholorship luncheon that I went and flimed and edited into a short 1 min. video with people talking about how important scholorships are ect.

Those are the types of things we'll be doing. We definitely wont be doing news style shooting.

I'd say a Canon DSLR would be right up your alley. They're cheap, and double as a still camera. So it can work double time.

T2i = ~700 bucks
7D = ~1400 bucks
5D = ~2400 bucks

brer, nah I'm not going to be a dick for no reason. I was nice back to him. He was a douche when he came to my place and interviewed me, and used only stupid quotes...he's just a douche period.

if its a comedy i wouldnt make any episode of it longer than 4 minutes

i dunno about all the filters.

Yeah, the filters are a bit much for sure.

Are you referring to the refraction I used on some of the backgrounds? It's the only video effect I used on it with varying levels of intensity, along with some lense distortion. Unless you're referring also to the fact that the entire video has Eddie chroma keyed and masked?

i think it's the whole inverted posterized look. it's a little much. i only made it about 60 seconds in, sorry.

I had to edit a snowboarding video for a friend of mine looking for a sponsorship with Pabst.

I'm not really a big snowboarding guy, so can someone who's into sports videos provide any tips? I might have to edit more stuff for him if he likes what he sees, so I want to keep the guy happy.

Only had FCP and Photoshop CS5 to edit this (don't have Motion/AE/etc.) so it's fairly basic. I also would've shot it differently if I was there. :c

How have I never seen this thread before? I'm the lead video producer/editor for my church and found this thread while taking a break editing an hour long wedding (4 cameras, <3 fcp). I'll share some of the things I was allowed more creative freedom on.

Cranked this out yesterday, quick teaser for our highschool camp in July, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzjLDK2UUZ8

Promo for another students event, inspired by the Terminator Salvation "you are the resistance" bit, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPM2Cs2Wbss

Recap of an event we had at an inner city school, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU1tmwcewBU (for some reason I haven't uploaded the version with the final graphics & finished filters yet)

Logo design I was fooling around with, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7WvcsZ7CHw

back to editing that wedding now :(

For anyone interested, Vincent Laforet has day 2 of a 3 day live HDSLR workshop broadcasting live at http://creativelive.com/live until 6pm PST. It started yesterday and the final day shows tomorrow at 10am PST.

It seems the recordings are being sold for $100 whilst the workshop is airing and $149 after it has completed.

Wish I thought to mention this in here yesterday, I just caught the tail end of it.

Any recommendations for a pre built PC ideal for HD video editing (1080p) under $800? If that's even possible. lol

I recently bought a new HD camera (thanks to recommendations from this thread) but now I realize it's a huge pain in the ass to edit HD video on my current system. :(

Not interested in a Mac. I love Premiere Pro.

Anyone have a source for a small, one actor project concepts? I've got a couple of ideas, but they're pretty lame. I've also seen a few script sites, but their one actor stuff is more suited to audition monologues.

The reasoning is that my seven year old daughter wants to be an actress, and while I know that desire may pass eventually, I think doing a video with her would be a fun father/daughter project. I'd also like to keep it to just my daughter so I don't have to deal with over-protective soccer moms.
