The Game Awards: Expansions, DLC, Remakes, Remasters All Eligible for All Categories

Yeah, this is the sign of a poor year.

Silent Hill 2: Remake
Persona 3 Reload: Remake
Dragon's Dogma 2: Rehash/Glorified Remaster of DD1
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Remake

The only new games that have a chance at nomination are Metaphor Rehashtastico, Black Myth: Ripoff, Zelda Echoes of Boredom, Astro Bot and Helldivers.

Astro Bot's apparently a good game, but clearly not one that would win GOTY in a more competitive lineup. Helldivers 2 winning would be like Overwatch winning in 2016. Not the proudest thing.

So theoretically a single added character to , say, Super Smash Bros., could be eligible as GOTY?

That's absolutely ridiculous and just devalues the award(s). Well, if they had any value to begin with.

That's retarded. DLC should have its own category. The Elden Ring dlc is phenomenal yes, but it should not be in the running for GOTY

Literally just an excuse for him to suck From's dick again.

Funny GIF

Remakes/remasters should all be lumped in with new releases. DLC/Expansion should be in 1 category "Best expansion content" or whatever they want to call it.

This is extremely stupid. DLC/expansions/etc. should have its own category. I guess Erdtree auto wins now due to Fromsoftware's popularity.

I want Shadow of the Erdtree to win just so I can complain that a PS4 game gets GOTY 4 years into this generation. Fucking embarrassing.

SotE is probably getting nominated. They didn't put out this catch all disclaimer before Resident Evil 4 was nominated last year, which means they're trying to get ahead of the DLC as GOTY accusations.

Question is, that's leaves two spots instead of three as Metaphor, Rebirth and Astro Bot are all getting nominated. So, which game is going to miss out?

Am I really expected to be mad at getting remakes when they legit have been good, and have been better than most shit coming out? This isn't like movie remakes where 95% of them are garbage. Video Game remakes so far have a very strong track record. I'm perfectly happy with reliving the glory days in HD with updated controls if modern game developers can't make interesting and innovative shit anymore.

There's barely anything coming out that isn't a remake or remaster. Hell, each showcase has a slew of games that are already out.

All of the development resources going into remakes, remasters and ports could be going to new and interesting stuff. The opportunity cost is way higher than it is for film.

"Innovative"? Well it's not 2004 anymore, so no. But that's not what's required.

Generally, it's not healthy for us to feed into this mentality of reliving the glory days. At some point, you won't have any more games to remaster, and half a generation would've been spent backtracking in IP.

To me, DLCs, no matter how high the quality, are just adding on to an existing game, they should not be eligible for awards targeted at new games of the year.

It's different if we're talking about a category that is almost exclusively designed for games that receive constant updates which would mainly be the mobile game category. I'll be hoping Honkai Star Rail gets nominated again for Best Mobile, but that's a sub-medium of gaming designed to be constantly updated with new content.

But standard console/PC games are not that. If they want to make a bigger focus on the Best Expansion/DLC award, go for it, but they should not count as a new game of the year.

Haha, elden ring could win again as shadow of the erdtree was really good, and we see miyazaki on stage. This is going to be hilarious.

I don't mind the change, but how about announce it at the start of the year instead of a few weeks prior to the event, they're just making it look bad.

In a year of recycled and polished nostalgia—much of it being great but still void of originality—if Astro Bot doesn't win then I'll continue to think exactly what I do right now; the game awards are a gigantic waste of time and Geoff is a nutsack wrinkle.

I don't get what people see in this show.

Who cares about this crap? All this is as useless as the Oscars. I'll just watch a day later and skip to all the game reveals, that's all I'm interested in.

I think Remasters shouldn't be considered.
Remakes are fine since they can feel different sometimes
DLCs shouldn't as well, they require the base game so technically they are not a game.

You underestimate how many & much perennially online losers need to be validated by faux Game Awards for games they may or may not have even played because they will never find it anywhere else.

dlc should not be eligible unless its standalone. Such BS
It's fine if it is, but have it be its own category. Put the DLC for ER, Diablo 4, NMS, FF4, etc and have them fight it out. But don't put Elden Ring DLC with every other full release for the year.
