The Game that Sold the System

Every one of you must have brought a console to play 'that' game, it was after launch and you saw Tekken Tag running in the shop window or whatever. So what was the game that made you purchase the necessary apparatus ??

PS2: Gran Turismo 3
Xbox: Halo
Gamecube: Luigis Mansion (but more so the posibility of a new mario game)
GBA: Super Mario World
PSP (near future): All of the things it does that are not game related
PC: Wolfenstien 3D

Edit - forgot: DC: Shenmue

PSOne: SF Alpha (And also the fact that FFVII would come after)
N64: Mario 64
DC: Sonic Adventure
PS2: SSX
Xbox: DOA3
GCN: All the Nintendo games I wanted to play
GBA: Bah, nothing, I knew I wanted one
DS: Bought it too fast :(

I do not buy system for one game, however certain games did give me more motivation.

Ps2: Winning Eleven
Xbox: XBMC
GameCube: Promise of a new Metroid game.
GBA: Castlevanias

Dreamcast: Soul Calibur
Xbox: DOA3 & JSRF
NGC: Zelda TWW (big mistake, but that's another story)
PS2: The pending release of Sega Rally 2005 finally convinced me to turn off the graphics whore inside me for some time. Quite a backlog to work on :)

Nintendo: Contra
PSOne: Vigilante 8 (I fell in love with the school bus loaded with machine guns and other heavy weapons :lol)
PS2: Final Fantasy X
PC: Battlfield 1942 Wake Island Demo

Near Future (Summer 2005)
Xbox: Ninja Gaiden
PSP: Wipeout Pure

Xbox - Tie (Shenmue 2, Jet Set Radio Future)
GCN - Super Smash Brothers Melee
Game Boy Colour - Pokemon Yellow
Nintendo DS - Animal Crossing
Dreamcast - Jet Grind Radio

Oh, and the ultimate system seller..

N64 - Goldeneye.

I clocked over 300 hours on it before even buying it and playing single player extensively.

PSOne: Tekken 3, Crash 2
Xbox: Pandora Tomorrow
PS2: MGS2
Dreamcast: Soul Calibur

Nintendo systems dont count for me, I would buy them if they didn't even have software :p

I do not buy system for one game, but I'll name one that I was extra amped for at the time.

PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2
Xbox: Halo
GC: MGS - Twin Snakes

Atari 2600-Space Invaders
N.E.S.-R.B.I. BaseBall
Genesis-Altered Beast
SNES-Super Mario World
32X-Virtua Racing Deluxe
Jaguar-Alien Vs. Predator
Saturn-Daytona U.S.A.
PSX-Toshinden
N64-Super Mario 64
DreamCast-Sonic Adventure
PS2-Dynasty Warriors 2
Xbox-Halo
GameCube-Rogue Squadron 2

Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog
Playstation: Final Fantasy
Xbox : Halo
Gamecube: Metroid Prime
PS2 : Grand Theft Auto 3
PC: Space Quest, Half Life (two new computers)

I just bought a PS1 last week so I could play Wing Commande 3 & 4.

Last computer I bought was an upgrade for C&C Generals.

NES-Super Mario Bros.
Gameboy-Super Mario Land
Super NES-Super Mario World
Playstation-Final Fantasy 7
N64-Super Mario 64
Dreamcast-Soul Calibur
PS2-Final Fantasy X
GBA-Castlevania COTM
Xbox-Ninja Gaiden
Gamecube-Resident Evil 4

For GameCube it was Smash Bros Melee. Great game. I bought a GameBoy Color just to play Link's Awakening DX in color, because I never got a chance to play it. After I was sitting outside of Wal Mart playing my new GBC at a bench, these two old guys were swapping stories about getting drunk. :lol

Edit-Whoops, forgot about the reason I bought the first Playstation. I remembered GamePro gave SOTN such a high score, so I chose that as my first game, and good lord, what a fine game.

PS2: Devil May Cry
Xbox: Halo 2
Gamecube: Nintendo
GBA: Nintendo
PSP: Mercury
PC: Duke Nukem 3d
DS: Nintendo
GB: Nintendo
SNES: Nintendo
NES: Super Mario Bros.
N64: Nintendo
Dreamcast: Power Stone
Saturn: Nights into Dreams
etc.

N64: Mario 64
DC: Marvel vs Capcon 1 - it looked arcade-perfect, in my eyes
PS2: What sold me was the cheap DVD player
Xbox: Shenmue 2
GCN: I came for the Super Mario Sunshine, I stayed for the Animal Crossing
GBA: Mario Advance: Super Mario World, plus my collection of GBC and GB games
DS: Animal Crossing DS

NES: Super Mario Bros

SNES: Super Mario World/All-Stars/Kart bundle at Best Buy (and my love for nintendo brought on by the NES) I also wanted Castlevania IV and Zelda, but I didn't actually purchase those until I already had an N64

Game Boy: Super Mario Land 2

N64: Super Mario 64

PSX: Final Fantasy VII alone

DC: Dead or Alive 2 and the promise of Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia. One of those three delivered most of what I wanted, the other two were good, but disappointing. I split the purchase with a friend who was a big DOA fan. I meant to get Sonic with it but Funcoland was out,, so we went with Soul Calibur instead. Quite a happy accident.

PS2: nothing, actually. I bought it at launch on blind faith in Square as well as because it played PSX games, but I guess Final Fantasy X was my main impetus

GBA: Castlevania CotM

GC: Smash Bros Melee

DS: same initial mistake as PS2, but it sure does play GBA nicely. Mario brought back nice memories. I own it for the upcoming Castlevania, Advance Wars, and Final Fantasy III.

Saturn: Daytona and a Saturn for 15$ as well as the chance (eventually fulfilled) to play Panzer Dragoon Saga

PS2: The reinvention of Grand Theft Auto
Xbox: Halo
Gamecube: Eternal Darkness...haha I'm not kidding! At least I didn't buy it for Mario or Zelda. Who knew.
GBA: Advance Wars
PSP (near future): It's the possibilities of console level gaming on the go, online gaming with a portable, handheld, etc.
PC: Teh INTERNET
DS: Something interesting that isn't a puzzle game or existing IP.

N64: Mario 64
DC: Sonic Adventure
Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future
GCN: Super Smash Bros Melee
DS: Super Mario 64 DS
PS2: No idea! ...
PSP: Lumines

Sorry everyone. I thought this thread would be interesting when I was reclining in my lawn chair thinking of its conception.

Turns out it's all pretty boring stuff. Again, apologies.

N64: Mario 64
GCN: SSB:M
Xbox: Halo 2
GBA: Not really sure by F-zero:Maximum Velocity was the game I got with it

NES: Super Mario Bros.
SNES: Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country
PS1: Final Fantasy XI, Metal Gear Solid
N64: Super Smash Bros.
GC: Super Smash Bros. Melee

All of my other systems were either given to me or purchased for collectivity reasons, except for GBA, which I bought for an E3 trip.

Since i didnt buy ps2, gamecube nor xbox at their respective launch, i'll list the games that made me snap and "forced" me to buy the goddamn platform :p

PS2, it was GT3, bought the gt3 pack, played the hell out of that game, DMC and MGS2 just a few months later was icing on the cake.

Xbox it was Halo, yes its a launch title but i didnt have the money to buy it, so i bought it in february 2002, and i'll never forget the trip to montreal to find one of the few xbox left, i got car sick, kept vomiting every 5 mins >_< Came back home, really didnt feel like playing a 3d game, so i ate and slept for a couple of hours, then played halo, a LOT.

Gamecube it was Eternal darkness, Summer 2002 iirc, Launch lineup really didnt do anything for me, SSBM being multiplayer i didnt bother since i rarely see any of my friends anymore and when we do meet each others, its not to play games (thats why online should become a standard for every goddamn platform). Loved the game, played throught it 3 times to see the differences

GBA, meh i dont know, simply hype, an impulsive buy, bought THPS2 and never played it all that much, it collected a lot of dust, until Advance wars that is.

DS, hype, mario DS, but mostly for the future titles like advance wars and castlevania, also me not having a GBA SP and badly wanted to have a backlit screen, mostly playing GBA games on it so far, AW2 and FE ;)

NES Metroid

Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2

SNES Street Fighter II

Atari Jaguar Aliens vs. Predator

Saturn NiGHTS

PSX Tomb Raider

N64 Mario 64

PS2 SSX

GameCube Pikmin

I never bought a system for a game, but in my opinion the game(s) that made many people buy these systems, off the top of my head (ie. I'm probably forgetting some very obvious titles):

Atari 2600: First Asteroids and Space Invaders, later Pac-Man.
Intellivision: More complex sports games.
Colecovision: Near-arcade DK and DK Jr.
NES: SMB, of course. Also Excitebike, Punch Out, later Tecmo Bowl.
SMS: No one bought it anyway (in North America).
Genesis: Both Altered Beast and Golden Axe were very popular at the time. Did Sonic really sell that many Genesis systems? I guess so, I just never really cared for it and didn't know many who did. Sega's NFL games were probably a big system seller as well (remember the Joe Montana commercials).
SNES: Mario again. Also good vibes coming off the NES
PS1: Toshinden, Destruction Derby and Wipeout were enormously hyped in '95. Squaresoft later on.
Saturn: Daytona, Virtua Fighter.
N64: Mario. Again. Zelda, too.
Dreamcast: Soul Calibur, I guess.
PS2: Good vibes coming off the PS1 considering the PS2's early lineup was mostly dogshit. GTA's later on, of course. FF too, I guess.
Cube: More Mario and Zelda.
Xbox: Halo. Hard drive/better graphics. Ability to be modded.

Gameboy Pocket - Played a friend's and it was hard to go back to the old blurry GameBoy after playing this.
GameBoy Color - No clue why I bought this. I guess I just thought it'd be better?
