The Gamer: There Aren't Enough Reasons To Buy A PlayStation VR2 Right Now

In a world where something like 60% of America can't afford a 1000$ emergency, 550$ is mind numbingly expensive. People budget to buy consoles. Some on this forum seem to live in lala land when it comes to what is and isn't expensive to the general public.
I think the issue is more about the wording of the previous post 'eye-watering' part, and in this posts 'mind numbingly'. You have to compare this to the cost of other VR headsets, if someone wants to get into VR what is the cost of doing that and so in that comparison is PSVR 2 eye watering or mind numbingly expensive?

Is it expensive? yes, I guess, but then you have to consider....
is it overpriced? no (the technology inside of these things justifies the cost)

And if people can budget to get a console then why can't they budget to get a headset? How many homes have multiple consoles? (I bet that's rather high, I'm not exactly 'well off' but in my house we have PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S, two Switch consoles, we also have some previous gens handhelds, gave away my previous consoles to friends, not including two PSVR headsets (one broke) and getting a PSVR 2 headset in the next week or two)

Oh, it’s definitely not overpriced, and I love mine, but people here don’t seem to understand how poor most of America is. I grew up in the country, I saw poverty first hand. Most families can budget for a console, but 600$ accessories are out of the question.

VR would be more popular if besides just trying to make that big system seller, they actually make use of it even outside of gaming. I remember a year ago a friend told me how theres a virtual chatroom if you both have a VR headset and instead of just using watsup or viber or skype, you emulate sitting in a park or wherever with your avatars and shoot the shit in the virtual world. That sounds cool to me but they need to make more use for it.

People who live in squalor probably aren’t the target audience for this product.

There are not enough places to buy a PSVR2 right now. It boggles the mind.

I have to agree there. I understand maybe the first month the purchases are exclusive to the manufacturer's, but if they want more people playing it, then obviously it has to start appearing in retail stores like Best Buy, etc.

The average casual gamer won't look on Playstation's site for it.

Manifestly...or, you could express your ideas in a clear manner. 😏
I already said it. VR is being an early adopter of immature tech. My comparison was made to the first Tesla and the first Apple Watch, paying a high price for tech still in its infancy.

the people that clamored to pay Apple 10 grand for a gold watch that would be usably obsolete in 3 years and officially declared vintage in 6.

But it went over your head.
Im not denying the keep trying part but I feel like the hardware potential, software and adoption won't be there till quite sometime. So until then I'll wait, just like the first adopters of the $10,000 Apple Watch 1 or the first Tesla which was a Lotus Elise.

Huh...Except, we are talking about a device that costs in the hundreds of dollars...What do you expect them to sell next iterations for? 50 cents? It will remain in a relatively "high bracket", price wise, (well, not that high), so if you have a PS5, and want to enjoy quality VR, there will be no other options on the horizon for quite some time, and certainly not as a much more alluring price...

For pricing, it really comes to whether VR makers think their $500 and up pricing for PSVR and PC VR are the locked and loaded way to sell the products, or if it's so early that it can come down later on so there's good selection at $400, $300 or even $200.

We dont know.

When new media players come out, they trend to $1000 right away, but then DVD and BR players eventually got knocked down to like $50 or $60. But for something like 4k players, it seems they are all still around $200-300 in Canada. I dont see a sub-$100 coming any time soon.

But for something like microwaves, the small shitty ones are under $100, a medium ones are is around $150-200, and a bigger Panasonic ones are about $300 cdn. These prices havent changed in 20 years. I know because I bought my bro a medium tier microwave for his new house in like 2005 and it was $200 at Best Buy back then. So it seems like the microwave industry's pricing has been locked and loaded with predictable price tiers for decades.

For VR, still to early to tell.

We're talking about a niche product that cost the same price as the console. why is that price so high?

VR needs these options for me to buy.
  1. Price $249-$379.
  2. All software has some form of interaction layer with the hardware.
  3. backwards compatibility.
  4. some form of a wireless transmit protocol no delay or minimal as possible.
  5. 8 to 10 hour wireless playtime.
I refuse to spend $550-$600 dollars for this thing to be collecting dust in a closet a few weeks later.

Until Sony | Playstation Studios figures out these things I'll wait until 2037 when PS7 comes out, by that time hopefully VR won't still be in its infancy like the first iPhone.

Perhaps, but go read their pissy little hit pieces on Hogwarts Legacy buyers. lol, then get back to me.
I don't care about that shit. They are welcome to write whatever they want, it's a shitty blog, not a journalistic endeavor.

Just like gamers were welcome to ignore them, and we did, buying up 12+ million copies since launch.

For me, I dont think anything would get me to play it. I dont want something on my face for an hour pretending to slash a sword or duck being a crate like it's Wii Waggle World V2. Most games seem skewed to first person too, which I actually like. I like my shooters and RPGs to be first person view. But I want precision aiming with a gamepad, not holding up VR wrist controllers to my VR headset pretending to shoot an AK47.

A wired headset and meh battery time I dont think I'd have a problem with.

But assuming the games improve and the thing gets simplified to lightweight sunglass style (someone posted somewhere a few days or a week ago a pair of slim Steampunk looking VR goggles (I dont remember if that was real prototype or totally fake artwork, but that's what I'm talking about when it comes to form factor), BC is a must, meatier games and the thing is $100-200. $200 tops. $100 bundled with a console.

Who knows. Maybe when next gen consoles hit around 2027, we'll get there.

To me, all these VR sets are so heavy into specs race, it's not even the specs that matter, it's the games. I've seen videos of existing VR games. Graphics wise you can tell it' already decent enough. It would be better if they ddnt do so many cartoony neon coloured games, but it seems the specs are good enough to make modern day games, but it's just that the focus is on first person indie quality games.

That's fair enough - but the reason to buy is simple - it provides an experience unattainable in traditional flat gaming. There is nothing comparable to playing RE8 VR on the PS5 itself. And there won't be. Not on the PS6 or PS7 or PS8 either.

Interesting comment. Having the prices slashed as per the first example you provided will require mass market penetration, and without continuous investments and endless iterating, there is literally no chance of dramatically improving the offer, and, consequently, of reaching a larger audiance.

There is something called hype and popularity.
People buy things that they aren't interested sometimes.

It's hard to believe people are into things you don't find interesting huh? It's funny how some people can get hyped from a Pokeman game, yet think all VR games are just hype.

For me currently only three game worth buying for PSVR 2 for, CotM, RE8, and GT, I play VR for realism

That seems like a good number for someone looking to buy a new platform at launch.

People who don't own PS VR2 sure Love to talk about it.

Seriously!!!! It's insane!

And just like the Vita before it Sony sent this out to die without proper support :( then when it fails they will blame the vr market, when it needs compelling software

lol The Sony Fanboy is strong in this one.

If numbers were good, Sony would be shouting them from the rooftops. look around, outside of gaming forums and dedicated VR subreddits, nobody is talking about this device. The biggest PS podcasts have barely spoken of it since launch day. There is a reason Sony first tried a lottery system for sales, and backed off within a few weeks, opening up preorders to everyone. My wifes son (HS Student), who also bought one, works at walmart in Edmonton in Electronics/Gaming, and says they get almost no questions about it (In Canada it's been on shelves since Day 1). That's anecdotal, but it's also telling. Nobody on my friends list has bought one so far.

In no world is a 550$ peripheral a consideration for most people.

LOL at fanboy. The device was released 3 weeks ago, what incentive would they have to release numbers now for a device that they did a soft launch for?

In a world where something like 60% of America can't afford a 1000$ emergency, 550$ is mind numbingly expensive. People budget to buy consoles. Some on this forum seem to live in lala land when it comes to what is and isn't expensive to the general public.

So I'm guessing you forgot that the PS5 is $500 right? It's selling at record rates at that price. People that like VR, that have a PS5 also budgeted for this headset. How hard is that to understand?

Again, families will budget for a ps5, not for an accessory. Seriously, at this point you've become completely blind on this.

People that "like VR" are very few and far between.

And yes, if Sony had impressive sales, they absolutely would have released numbers already. There's a reason they went from a draw lottery to buy it, to open preorders within weeks, because they massively overestimated demand.

It's weird how you're so defensive over this project. It's a great headset, but it's not going to be some huge hit.

Mate, that is balls deep over the top assumptions from you.

None of that is based in reality except VR is not mainstream. The rest though comes from no where but your opinions with no receipts.

Believe what you want, there's no buzz about this at all. Within 3 days of launch, it was being talked about nowhere except dedicated subforums and small threads like this. Even the biggest playstation podcasts rarely mentioned it the week after release week. People in general don't care about VR, and especially in a time of major inflation for 600$. It's an accessory, not a console, that's what you guys don't understand. Accessories for consoles rarely have high uptake.

It's weird how you're so offensively against this project. I haven't said anything definitive about its success or failure. Only you have. I don't need it to be a huge hit. I just want it to be successful. You seem to need it to fail. Out of the two of us, you're the only weird one.

I agree,Yeah it hit hard, but it was new technologies in its infancy and I didn’t buy a iPhone till the 6 plus came out. Oct 1, 2014.

I've spent a lot to have a child, but I have literally no reason to have one yet. He doesn't do much of anything.
You haven't even scratched the surface :messenger_face_screaming: "a lot" comes and takes no mercy over the second decade of their life haha. Actually of all the expenses life throws at me, this/gaming really doesn't even register that high! Lucky or unlucky depending on how you see it I guess, definitely a strong mix of both!

Yea, well he was a successful second attempt at IVF. So believe me. It's cost me a lot more already than most people having a kid at this age.

Yeah I’m serious I’ll wait till the price and product gets better until then VR2 can fuck off. No offense to Sony or anyone that wants to buy it and be an early adopter of console VR.

You can’t accept my opinion as others have?

I’m not out here saying nooooo don’t buy it.

By that time a cup of coffee at your local cafe costs 249 dollars lol. It’s nice to want things for free. 249 dollars equals going 5 times to the mc Donald’s here in Sweden with 2 kids lol.

Since I got mine on the day after launch, I've struggled to find ambition to play anything flat, and even when I've played flat I've done it in my headset on a monster screen. I love it, and I haven't been this blown away and excited about a generational leap in over a decade. It's incredible. If you get a chance to try it, try it. Don't read someone's opinion on it and decide. Put one on and play.

Clown gaming journalists remain clowns when it comes to talking about VR... huge shock

I will not defend gaming journalism.

I don't need to be a journalist to feel the desperation to justify a purchase in this thread, if people really were satisfied with their VR Headset they'd just ignore this and go use it.

I mean, I know the feeling, I got a Series X and a PS5 and there are barely any reasons to get them two and a half years later after launch, there will be Slim and Pro models of these things before there's a decent library of games to play on them.

let me preface this with "I own one" and I love the thing... but I mean come on guys the article are sort of right here.

the only thing that sold out at launch is the charger for the controller (thank god I stuck a preorder down for that) showing that its not so hot that its selling out. No one I talk to is really interested outside of the generic "is it any good" to which I answer "yeah its great". I think their right in saying "That magic isn’t there anymore" VR is a thing that's not new and has lost that WOW factor it had 5+ years back. Its also very hard to describe to someone who has never used it before, like the first time you put a headset on you go "oh I get it now" but its very different from the picture you had in your head before that event, this makes it an incredibly hard sell for anything over £300 or even at that price.

Half-Life Alyx and a new Astro would make me very happy indeed, hell a remaster of the original Astro would be great too, but I dont think killer apps are going to solve it really, the issue is the fact its an additional cost like the Mega CD or 32X to play the games.

This is all just fluff opinion nonsense...

Vr is doing healthy for what it is and PSVR2 is selling exactly to those who want it.

It doesn't need a "justification", that's how you know people who have no clue what they are talking about when they try discuss VR.

I don't have PSVR2 yet, but only cause recently I've had other big expenses. When I am able to get one I will.

For exactly the same reason I got the first PSVR as well as my Rift S and my Quest 2.

The justification is that you want VR that's it.

These clown console warrior threads from unintelligible journalists are becoming rather embarrassing

I agree. Once vr wow factor wears off, you realise that most games are this smaller arcade titles. And once you get your vr legs, you start noticing pixels, lenses distorting, comfort and so on.
Alyx was the best, life changing vr experience. The one and only. And that was on oldie rift cv1. Lone echo is also close behind
Arcade gaming might be the reason some are more into VR than others. I grew up with Atari and still sometimes play those games from time to time, games with simple mechanics but fun to get better at. I remember struggling to continue playing Half-Life Alyx (don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic game from start to finish) because I couldn't stop playing Pistol Whip.

Wii waggle doesn't compare to VR motion controls. I owned one and I was seriously disappointed that everything was too abstracted, you literally flailed your arms randomly and shit happened on screen, VR though is 1:1 controls, it's having your hands in game. Don't dismiss it without trying it for yourself, you might find it more fun than you think.
And nothing is more precise than aiming the gun yourself. I played FPS games on PC and consoles for decades, but once I played in VR I instantly became faster, deadlier and accurate, and I don't mean slow VR-only shooters like Pavlov and shit, I mean Quest ports like Quake 3 Arena or Doom. Rocket jumping has never been easier.

I do want single player stories like horizon.

As long as they're skippable on subsequent playthroughs I'm ok with story. Being stuck on the spot for minutes while being talked to gets old too fast in VR.

Once the novelty of the boobies wears off, the story is actually what kept me going, some of them were really moving.

Your expectations are way unrealistic. It would be like wanting consoles to launch at $200, be as powerful as an RTX4090, include 4 controllers and 3 pack in games.

As long as they're skippable on subsequent playthroughs I'm ok with story. Being stuck on the spot for minutes while being talked to gets old too fast in VR.

There's nothing unreasonable about my expectations, the PS VR2 hardware shouldn't cost $550-6 with tax for 2 wands and a headset I would accept $350 but they are price gouging killing the adoption.

BTW your analogy is way off and sounds ridiculous.
RTX4090
4 controllers
3 games
$200

My ask were simply a headset and 2 wands anywhere from $250 to $350-4 with tax.
The other innovations will come with time which I'm willing to wait for.
