I got to see grand master flash live about a year ago and it was exactly how they portrayed it in the get down, down to the bboys and music selection.

Really great show, absolutely loving the style, characters and music in this. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long before the rest of the episodes come out.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I actually like the fact that this is coming out in parts. Telling myself there's only six episodes I need to watch is a smaller commitment than a full 13-part or multiple-season behemoth like some of the other Netflix stuff.

Checked out the first episode and about half of the second.
Feels a little all over the place at times from a production standpoint, which considering how ambitious it is, is to be expected.
I also feel like some scenes are very well written and acted while a few come off like after school specials.
I do plan on sticking with it though.

I am a big fan of Hip Hop myself and I have been to the South Bronx on several occasions throughout my life. Some for not so lawful reasons. Some for legit reasons, the most memorable being seeing KRS perform at a club called The Fever (although I did leave early thanks to some kid with dreads who gave me a heads up his friends planned on robbing me).

Growing up in NJ and listening to Hip Hop and also being 41 years old means I very much know the history and the legend of the area itself. So it is truly great to see that represented for more people to appreciate and based on what I do know, they are doing a great job at telling what went down.

Also as a side note, if anyone is really enjoying this show, if you have never read the graphic novel Hip Hop Family Tree, especially Volume 1, written and draw by Ed Piskor, I strongly recommend doing so. It tells the same stories as The Get Down, just with a lighter point of view and illustrated in a great style.

Show is legit. Seems to be some hate for Jaden not sure why I think he did a great job.

I always root for Jaden in all his movies but his acting in this just reminded of Chris Klein's Nash in Legend of Chun Li, especially the scene where he meets
Thor
for the first time.

Oh my god, the last few minutes of episode three were amazing. I was already digging this show but this episode really sold it for me. Can't wait to watch the rest.

This show is so fucking amazing. I mean it never gets as Bazzy after the pilot, but still, it's such a celebration of music and 70s NYC that it makes you wonder why HBO bothered with Vinyl.

Yeah, I watched it all over 2 nights. I was really dubious going in, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I actually liked the tone they were going for. The whole exaggerated Kung Fu stuff was good and I laughed out loud a few times. DJ Malibu was awesome!

man I literally find it an injustice that this show is barely getting a fraction of the buzz of Stranger Things. I am floored by it. Some kinks to work out but it is just so damn fun.

As I was watching I realized I just got something I never knew I wanted until I had it. It handles the authenticity of the era and music and pop culture so well, the production design is amazing (I get a little Warriors vibes at times), characters are hella fun, soundtrack rocks etc. God damn, please be a success and don't cut the budget or season order of this.

mad props to them for assembling a team of producers/consultants who prioritized the sound and look of the show. And it treats the rise of hip hop so refreshingly too. This isn't a sterile "rap biopic", it makes it feel almost mythical. The framing device of having future Zeke/Nas narrate the story through a rap concert is clever.

Fuck man, I am too enthusiastic about this.

Just finished Part I in a single sitting with two buddies and holy fuck, this is so good. Everything from the stylized cinematography, to the authentic representation of late-70s NYC, to the music and amazing writing. I can't get over how good this show is. Agreeing with others saying it's unfair that this got a fraction of the buzz that Stranger Things did, because while I also loved Stranger Things, this was just as good.

Netflix is on goddamn FIRE.

I came into this expecting a serious dramatic period piece but it flipped my expectations and surpassed them. I love this show, no doubt it deserves more love than it's getting.

Just finished watching episode 4. My gosh this show is so good! Homegirl got to be crazy to still trust that guy after
she found him nearly dead and it looks like he about to fuck up big
.

Just finished the pilot. Wow. It's absolutely terrible. There are some moments where you can tell what they were trying to accomplish, occasionally things come together and it just clicks, but for the most part it's just bad. I'm hopeful that things will work out a lot better over the next few episodes, but after that pilot, I'm not sure if I'm willing to sit through more to get to that point. The writing at times....Jesus.

Edit:
I'd still recommend people to at least check out the pilot. There are things one can fall in love in, it's not all bad. Just mostly.

Just binged this in two days. Incredible show, the final battle was hype as fuck. Shit was so good. Was thrilled when after the last episode it said season 2 was coming next year. Was expecting this to be a one off thing, but definitely up for more.

By the way, anyone know what tracks are sampled during the final battle? In particular there was this sample with trumpets I'm sure is pretty famous, but I just can't place it.

The Star Wars theme?

I don't think so. It starts at 0:55 in the below link:

Oh shit it is Star Wars isn't it.

Damn, no, I was hoping you meant the intro :)

It's Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - Freedom (about 1:36 in, if the timestap doesn't work).

Edit: if that in itself is sampled from something else I don't know, that's what my searches got me to at least.

Edit: further searches got me to this song about 3:35 in. Not sure how deep this rabbit hole goes.

Finished this last night and I really liked it! The pilot was all over the place, but it settled down in the later episodes. Really good story about the origins of rap/hip-hop. Give me part 2!

I actually believe it said PART 2, not season 2.
they only released the 1st half of season 1 so far because the show was having some production issues. If they waited till it was done, we wouldn't have gotten any of the show till who knows when sometime next year.

so long story short, season 1 isn't over yet. That was only the 1st half.

I just watched the first two episodes tonight. I actually really love this so far. I took a peak at the AV Club's reviews and they did not give the show good scores, so I was pleasantly surprised to find I disagree with them. I could see why you could not like it or even call it a mess, but I think that provides a bit of the charm.

From what I've seen of the season, this will only appeal to a very narrow audience. It's not like Friday Night Lights where there's no need to like football to enjoy the show. If you don't like this style of music, you won't like the show.

Finished watching yesterday. I loved it and I really don't ever listen to hip hop at all.

Although, I must say that I don't mind listening to "classic" old school hip hop. It's the modern shit on the media nowadays that I can't stand.

It's not just hip-hop you have Elena's thing too and the disco club and I noticed some stuff that sounded like it came from a 70s kung fu movie.

I loved this, it was great and well worth every penny Netflix paid. The editing of the first episode was a bit off for me but it came together very well.
The only thing that drives me nuts is they did not call the breaks of the records the breaks but the get down, but I got over it.

Why was this show so expensive to make?

Period piece in a decrepit Bronx with destroyed buildings and shit. Requires lots of cgi. Uses famous rappers and other musicians of the period to make good music. Plus research and all that shit. It was originally shot like two years ago too. Who knows.
