nah. the first had such a great level of energy to it. the rest is so dope too but that was something else.

I strongly disagree. The pilot was among the worst thing I've watched in years. Something is bad when I have to wonder if this is actually better than Between. The second episode was at the very least tolerable.

Show is legit. Seems to be some hate for Jaden not sure why I think he did a great job.

he's a terrible actor.

binged the show over the weekend and now i'm sad I have to wait until 2017 for the rest.

i'm also really not a fan of the exposition overload at the beginning of each episode. lame as hell to me especially in the context of a concert.

Loved the show, at first I thought it was corny but I really love how they tied together DJing, Breakdancing, MCing, Graffiti and even Kung-Fu to a degree.

Cast was also excellent.

Damn, that was a great watch.
Even with the kinda mixed reviews, I had no doubt I'm gonna love it, but I didn't expect to it enjoy it as much as I did.

Episode 1 was great, and I feel like is a pretty good representation of the rest of the show. I liked the following episodes a lot as well, even if they weren't as good. Episode 5 and 6 were just a treat. I had so much fun watching them, and the last 10 minutes of the last episode were so much hype!
Especially when the Star Wars theme kicked in

Around episode 5 is when I fell in love with Dizz. I don't get the hate. He's a fantastic character, and Jaden is a perfect fit for the whole. He's definitely one of my favorites. Loved that weird party scene.

My only nitpick was in episode 6 -
the "power" scene was great, but I just couldn't enjoy it to it's fullest because of that damn cockroach. I despise them and every time I saw Zeke giving it a look, I looked away and it sucked me out of the scene.

I'm sure it's not a show for everyone, but I'll recommend it to everyone.
Can't wait for Part 2. This and Sense8 at the start of 2017 is sooo good!

Listening to the soundtrack right now at work and man it's giving me feels about how good the show was. Just wanna go back and re-watch now.

Finally had the time to sit and watch 2 episodes of this and man that first episode is a mess an enjoyable mess and pure Luhrmann some of the multicuts were dizzying.

It does click though as you either buy into this stylized world or you don't. This won't take on the social media and cultural buzz that Stranger Things did though. But it's still fun as hell.

This show is so good, Baz's best in a long time. Crazy to me that it isn't getting more hype, it's fantastic.

So I just finished watching the first season of the most expensive television show ever made, and I'm posting on GAF because I have no idea what to make of it. Which I suppose is the point. The get down used its vast resources as best as it could to authentically recreate 1970s New York and the melting pot of distinctly individual subcultures and the dualities that caused their merging. This gives the show an almost overwhelming mix of tones as it shifts from aping The Wire to Xanadu and its Saturday night fever dream. To Empire, Skins, HighSchool Musical, Sister Act, Sex and the City and the somewhat mystical Kung Fu films from the 70s and 80s.

Yet it feels like this is the point. The Get Down is a show about confused people trying to live lives with an inherent duality to them, and trying to find what its own unique voice is. The shows own message then is that this confusion is valuable to the creative process. A process is to be appreciated and respected as this convergence of talented humans is what makes life great. It's a romantic opinion but for a show that wears its heart on its sleeve it feels right,

Is it worth a watch then. without question. It's a 7/10 that aims for the stars and reaches them more often then not.

I binge watched this and expected to like it more than I did. Actually, I think that I will like this show more in the following seasons if they're made once they're deeper into hip hop.

The show was ambitious, energetic, inspiring, and beautiful. Some great talent in the young cast for sure. This show really came out of nowhere for me. I'm aware of the issues with this production, but I think the positives easily outweighed any negatives.

What a completely bloody awesome show that was. Loved every minute, especially episode six. The last half hour had me grinning from ear to ear. Beautiful.

I watched it on my own, because I wasn't sure if my wife would like it. To be honest, I'm still not sure, but I'm going to try and persuade her to binge watch it this weekend. I need to see it all again!

So damn good.

I'm saving the last episode for tonight, but I binged the rest of it over the past week. The show is amazing and I hope traction builds up for it soon.

I know nothing about this show other than I heard Jaden Smith was in it.

I wish I didn't even know that much.

I see this on Netflix and I always think is this that new Donald Glover show? That looks like him to me.

This show is from Baz Luhrmann.

The Donald Glover show is going to be on FX and is called "Atlanta".

Half an hour in - this is schizophrenic and unfocused and melodramatic and terrible.

The visual style is cool, but then the editing comes in a ruins it.

This was my impression as well. Felt like a Broadway adaptation of hip hop. Totally tuned out about 10 minutes in.

Hasn't it been widely agreed that the first episode is no far the worst?

Anyway really enjoying the series so far.

Nah the pilot is the strongest episode for me by far. Great series tho. There's an energy in the direction of this show that has been seriously lacking in TV.

Wow, 6 episodes is way too short for such an amazing show. Can't wait for the rest.

I'm a say that the first episode had some of the weakest parts. Think it'll be a hard sell for many due to that.

Period piece in a decrepit Bronx with destroyed buildings and shit. Requires lots of cgi. Uses famous rappers and other musicians of the period to make good music. Plus research and all that shit. It was originally shot like two years ago too. Who knows.

Doesn't CGI actually lower production costs? There is also a metric shit ton of documentaries, books, interviews and people who are still alive that research shouldn't be a cost factor either.

Music listening can be costly, so there's that.

Awesome show, I demand more now!
Is there any information about the release of the second half?
Some say end of the year, other say beginning next year.
Can't wait!

I like this show. The DJing and rapping is pretty good. I wonder if the disconnect with show and some outlets is the lack of appreciation for the rapping. How many shows get it right?

Did Nas write everything? I loved the way the introduction basically filled in the gaps in the story. It all sounded great, and not phony.

The storytelling reminds me of Ghostface's album from a couple years ago.

I just started, after finally barreling through a couple other shows, and while I'm taking issue with some of the stylistic choices being made here, I'm definitely enjoying myself here. It's fresh and unique.

Just started last night, watched the first 2-3 episodes. Holy fuck, this show is so much better and fresher than I expected. Super entertaining and done excellently.

I absolutely fucking adored this show. It's been quite a while since i've seen so many episodes (considering they're huge) one after another. I can't wait for the second half of this.

That part where
Jackie thinks up the song on the spot is AMAZING. The final minutes with the DJ battle too. DAMN.
<3

The reception this show is getting reminds me of Sense 8.... Those who even bother talking about it mostly seem to like it or love it, those who don't like it just stop watching after an episode or two, overall interest and awareness is super low.

:/

I honestly thought the word of mouth would have increased by now.

"And the skinny kid is there playing on the piano..."

My favorite scene in the show.

Hey, fix that tag :P

but yeah, i think it's mine too. It keeps going back and forth between
the get down brothers and book being fucking awesome and with jackie and his vision for mylene

I think it suffers the same problems of Sense8 as in it has a kinda slow start. The first episode isn't that good. (the ending of it is, though <3)

Me too. I even made a facebook post about it. Practically everybody that watched it until the end loved it.

Just finished last night watching Part 1 with the girl.

Fuck man... so so good, maybe I am bias due to my lifelong obsession with graffiti but that quick speech Books gave before heading over to the battle was epic.

Name dropping some legends in that little piece.

Jaden wasn't that bad, actually what he was supposed to be... the son of a beatnik jazzy dashiki wearing poet was fairly spot on.

Marlene and the two girlfriends, I need them in a bad way. Damn fine.

Love the line about Herc... "speakers so loud..."

Cannot wait for Part 2.

I honestly thought the word of mouth would have increased by now.

I've told a few people about it, but most of the ones interested in this kind of music were already aware of it. For the rest, I get a mix of derision for Jaden, or people wanting to wait for the full series to marathon.

It's also really hard to describe.

Edit: Top of the page! Have a Herizen pic.

I loved Books speech featuring graffiti. I love graffiti. I know some think of it as trash but I think it genuinely transforms a place in to your own abode. Where I'm from, driving down a major highway, you see graffiti on some of the highest and hardest to reach places. In large lettering that you can see far away, it says "be someone." It becomes its own landmark. It's tradition that on the way home going that way, and you see that graffiti you look up at that art and marvel it and ponder it. When they erased that tag, they repainted it within mere hours. That's how much it became a part of the city identity. "Remuv hate." "Be someone." I know tagging is illegal but I love how it's something we all share as a city or an area and Books' speech on it beautifully represented how something seen as negative and ugly can actually be beautiful and draw people closer together.

I'd love to hear of stories of graffiti that touches you in your cities.

My favorite tag has quite the story. Lol
